Abstract Due to China’s gender imbalance, it is estimated that more than 30 million adult males were unable to get married. The old-age support for older unmarried sons (so-called forced bachelors) and their parents faces a significant challenge. Using data from a survey in Central and Western rural China, the present study examined the impact of family structure and health status on the worries about old-age support for themselves and their parents from the perspective of older unmarried sons. The sample included 359 older unmarried sons with rural Hukou (housing registration) status. The age of he sample ranges from 28 to 51. The results showed that 52.64% and 54.8% of respondents were worried about their own and their parents’ old-age support, respectively. Ordered logistic regression showed that having a sister(s) was negatively related to worries about their own and parents’ old-age support. Those with living mothers had less worries than their counterparts, and those who had a brother(s) had less worries about their parents’ old age support. Moreover, having any brothers who were also older unmarried sons was positively related to worries about their own and parents’ old-age support. Older unmarried sons who had two frail old parents had more worries for their parents’ old-age support than those whose parents were physically independent. The study highlights the importance of family structure and parental health status as important factors in worries over old-age support in China.

ABSTRACTDifferent scenarios for an ageing society presume different approaches to the meaning of old age. One scenario anticipates a Prolongation of Morbidity, where quality of life concerns might permit active euthanasia or suicide as a means of saving money. Those who believe in a Compression of Morbidity opt for health promotion to delay morbidity in favour of productive ageing. Optimists look to a scenario of Lifespan Extension, where scarce health resources are not expended for incremental gains in life expectancy but rather for basic research to postpone or eliminate ageing. Finally, those who emphasize Voluntary Acceptance of Limits identify the meaning of old age with voluntary acceptance of finitude, where claims of future generations might limit longevity for any one generation. Thus, contrasting meanings such as quality of life, productive ageing, indefinite survival and voluntary limits entail very different consequences for the allocation of scarce resources across age-groups and among sub-groups of the elderly population.

The author analyzes the performance of the disability pension system in Latvia in order to assess the ability of the system to perform its main function: to prevent poverty among people with disabilities. It has been found that the system does not meet the criteria of adequacy and the causes of problem have been addressed. In the analysis, the author uses statistical data from Eurostat and the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia, Mutual Information System on Social Protection (MISSOC) database, as well as considers statutory regulations. Particular attention is paid to such an element of the pension system as statutory minimum pension amount as a key tool aimed at ensuring the adequacy of the social protection of people with disabilities. Additionally, the author provides a comparative analysis of minimum disability pension provisions in the EU member states. Since the systems of old-age pensions and disability pensions in Latvia are closely connected, the author emphases the importance of the improvement of the adequacy of disability pensions in achieving more adequate old-age pensions.
