To better encourage students to use a language in a meaningful context, to further provide a new learning methodology and experience, and to innovate assessment, a Chinese video project was introduced to students at the Language Centre of the London School of Economics and Political Science. The project, iFilm, asked students to make a short video using as many of the vocabulary words and grammar points they learned in class as possible. Students were given about three months to come up with the video concepts, to film, and to edit. They could complete the project using any themes they wanted and work either individually or in a group. The project was assessed under three categories: writing, speaking, and video production. Many students found the video project interesting and agreed that it helped their Mandarin learning. However, the project also met several challenges. Some constructive suggestions are provided for future application.

Given that short videos have attractedextensive attention of the public, the rise of governmental short videos makes governmental new media more interactive and responsive. However, the competition of short video market is fierce. A considerable number of government agencies and public institutions lack operating experience on short video accounts. The overall influence of these short video accounts is weak, and a mechanism of short video production is necessary. From the perspective that a new era is expected to fulfill people’s wish for a good life, we suggest combining people’s wish for a good life and governmental short videos. One the one hand, this approach identifies the audience clearly and thus benefits the production of high-quality short videos; on the other hand, it helps to attract more audience and thus meets the people’s needs for a good life in the new era. Governmental short video production should focus on three aspects: sense of fulfillment, sense of happiness, and sense of safety.Production guarantee should focus on contents, platforms, and dissemination motivations.

This research makes a case for the importance of children-specific non-fiction media content in a digital age. Drawing from my professional experience making children’s television, I piloted a media education and video production curriculum with a grade eight class at an independent, all-girls school in Toronto, Canada. This paper contextualizes my research by outlining the informing framework of participatory culture and several related concepts which intersect media studies, children’s culture, and pedagogy; it also presents my reflections on creating and testing the curriculum. To both complement my creative research-as-practice and participatory action research approach and chronicle the research project, I created a website (http://betweenproductions.wixsite.com/comcult). It features curriculum materials and research documents, including samples of the students’ work and their reflections; I also produced a short video that incorporates a mix of student and researcher video footage to illustrate one group’s experience creating their final project.

Under the background of the vigorous development of science and technology in China, the new media times come gradually. With the rapid emergence of various new media, people's methods and habits of media contact have changed. As an emerging medium, short video has gradually become an important way for people to communicate and interact with each other due to its low production and transmission threshold. However, the current problems such as network flooding have affected the effective dissemination of short videos and even directly affected people's social activities. Therefore, short video dissemination needs certain supervision channels to promote its healthy, stable and benign development.
