The work is devoted to the investigation of the effectiveness of the coordinate search methods for solving the problem of finding the position of the solar panels, in which the greatest power of the produced current is achieved. The existing solutions in the market of sun surveillance systems (solar trackers) are analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages of such systems are presented in comparison with fixed panels. It is proposed to improve the hardware and software for research of the solar panels efficiency, developed by the authors and highlighted in the previous works, by integrating the program realization of the algorithm of coordinate search of the maximum power of solar panels into the existing. For this purpose, the efficiency of three algorithms for coordinate search of the maximum, namely, the method of coordinate ascending, the Huck-Jeeves method and the Rosenbrock method, was studied in three parameters. Experiments were carried out on data obtained both experimentally using the lab stand for solar panel efficiency research, and by generation using mathematical model of the solar panel efficiency dependance on the angle of radiation, described in previous works. TThe results of experiments are analyzed, which showed a fundamental difference between the work of coordinatewise search algorithms on a mathematical model and experimental data. The main indicators of the efficiency of algorithms are substantiated on the basis of the meteorological conditions in which the measurement was carried out for the formation of experimental data. Conclusions are drawn regarding the efficiency of using these coordinate-based search methods for solving the problem of finding the optimal position of solar panels. Further prospects for research on this topic and the possibility of using coordinate-wise search methods in software of solar panels with a biaxial orientation on the position of the Sun are given.

Background: The solar field on our planet is inexhaustible, which favors the use of photovoltaic electricity which generates no nuisance: no greenhouse gases, no waste. Methods: It is a high value-added energy that is produced directly at the place of consumption through photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. Notwithstanding these advantages, the maximum power depends strongly on solar irradiation and temperature, which means that a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller must be inserted between the PV panel and the load in order to follow the Maximum Power Point (MPP) continuously and in real time. In this work, MPP’s behavior was simulated at different temperatures and solar irradiations using seven techniques which identify the MPP by different methods. Results: The novelty of this work is that the seven MPPT methods were compared according to a very selective criterion which is the MPPT efficiency as well as a purely digital duty cycle control without using the PI controller. The simulation under the PSIM software shows that the FLC, TP, FSCC, TG, HC and IC methods have almost the same efficiency of 99%, whereas the FOCV method had a low efficiency of 96%. Conclusion: This makes it possible to conclude that the best methods are FLC, HC and IC because they use fewer sensors compared to the rest.

DC/DC converters are widely used in photovoltaic (PV) systems to maximize the power drained from solar panels. As the power generated by a PV panel depends on the temperature and irradiance level, a converter needs to constantly modify its input resistance to remain at the maximum power point (MPP). The input resistance of a converter can be described by a simple equation that includes the converter load resistance and the duty cycle of the switching signal. The equation is sufficient for an ideal converter but can lead to incorrect results for a real converter, which naturally features some parasitic resistances. The goal of this study is to evaluate how the parasitic resistances of a converter influence its input resistance and if they are relevant in terms of MPPT system operation.

Many leading companies in the automotive industry have been putting tremendous effort into developing new powertrains and technologies to make their products more energy efficient. Evaluating the fuel economy benefit of a new technology in specific powertrain systems is straightforward; and, in an early concept phase, obtaining a projection of energy efficiency benefits from new technologies is extremely useful. However, when carmakers consider new technology or powertrain configurations, they must deal with a trade-off problem involving factors such as energy efficiency and performance, because of the complexities of sizing a vehicle’s powertrain components, which directly affect its energy efficiency and dynamic performance. As powertrains of modern vehicles become more complicated, even more effort is required to design the size of each component. This study presents a component-sizing process based on the forward-looking vehicle simulator “Autonomie” and the optimization algorithm “POUNDERS”; the supervisory control strategy based on Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (PMP) assures sufficient computational system efficiency. We tested the process by applying it to a single power-split hybrid electric vehicle to determine optimal values of gear ratios and each component size, where we defined the optimization problem as minimizing energy consumption when the vehicle’s dynamic performance is given as a performance constraint. The suggested sizing process will be helpful in determining optimal component sizes for vehicle powertrain to maximize fuel efficiency while dynamic performance is satisfied. Indeed, this process does not require the engineer’s intuition or rules based on heuristics required in the rule-based process.
