Abstract Through a macro inspection, chemical composition analysis, hardness inspection, graphite carbon inspection and energy spectrum analysis, the reason for the break of the energy storage spring of the circuit breaker in a 110kV substation are analyzed. The results show that poor manufacturing technology and anti-corrosion technology of the spring are the main reason for its fracture. Corresponding control measures are put forward to avoid similar failures from happening again.

Fracture failure analysis on device clamp screws of one 110kV transmission line has been carried out based on results of macro-observation, pre-tightening test, mechanical property examination, chemical composition analysis, microstructure observation, SEM observation and EDAX analysis. It is concluded that the main reason of the screw fracture lies in misuse material and improper heat processing which led to material degradation. Suggestions are put forward finally.

The process mineralogy of potassium-rich shale from Chaoyang of Liaoning, China, was studied. Research results showed there are much less variety and smaller quantities in mineral compositions. Calculated mineral composition by means of chemical composition analysis combined with XRD, MLA, IR and TG-DSC analyses showed that main minerals with were Potassium-feldspar, muscovite, biotite and illite, and gangue minerals were quartz and small amounts of hematite. Potassium-rich minerals such as potassium-feldspar and muscovite contact smoothly with quartz respectively, and there was the direction arrangement among potassium-feldspar, quartz and muscovite in the shale. And quartz and hematite were main cement in the shale. The influences of the research results on the potassium extraction from potassium-rich shale were distinct.

For the problem of high-speed rotating centrifuge spindle fracture failures, relevant analyses are conducted from the perspective of microstructure, chemical composition and fracture mechanics by using scanning electron microscopy and related instruments. Experimental results and analyses indicate that the spindle fracture is fatigue failure, mainly caused by cold cracks generated on the journal surfacing. Based on the analysis results, improvements and measures are suggested to better solve the spindle weld fracture failure problems.

The rupturing of feculence discharge pipe happened during the gas-tightness test of LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) spherical tanks. In order to find out the reasons of fracture failure of feculence discharge pipe, the Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, mechanical property testing, metallographic examination and energy spectrum analysis of corrosion products were used. The examination results show that both chemical composition and metallographic structure are normal, and the cracking is the brittle cleavage fracture. The energy spectrum analysis of corrosion products reveals that there are many sulfides in the corrosion products. Based on the loading conditions of spherical tanks, crack morphology and corrosion products, the primary reason of pipe cracking is stress corrosion cracking induced by H2S existed in liquefied petroleum gas. So it is suggested that the examination should be fulfilled for the feculence discharge pipe of such spherical tanks, the cracked pipes should be replaced, and the welding residual stress in the pipes should be relieved before replacing operation.
