Abstract The presented work studies the influence of various factors that affect the specific features of fuel pins melting. For this purpose, fuel pins with different geometries and energy release are considered. Numerical simulation of melting is carried out using a program module for calculating the destruction of fuel rods. Comparison with theoretical calculations is made. The analysis of the convergence of calculations with respect to the time step value and the number of calculated cells along the radius and height is carried out. As a result of work with the use of numerical methods, the characteristic times of destruction of fuel elements during an accident with a loss of coolant flow rate (an accident of the ULOF type) and the dependence of weight loss on time are obtained under various conditions.

Based on the analytical solution of one-dimensional simplified equation of damping tidal wave and Heuristic stability analysis, the precision of numerical solution, computational time and the relationship between the numerical dissipation and the friction dissipation are discussed with different numerical schemes in this paper. The results show that (1) when Courant number is less than unity, the explicit solution of tidal wave propagation has higher precision and requires less computational time than the implicit one; (2) large time step is allowed in the implicit scheme in order to reduce the computational time, but the precision of the solution also reduce and the calculation precision should be guaranteed by reducing the friction factor: (3) the friction factor in the implicit solution is related to Courant number, presented as the determined friction factor is smaller than the natural value when Courant number is larger than unity, and their relationship formula is given from the theoretical analysis and the numerical experiments. These results have important application value for the numerical simulation of the tidal wave.

The paper describes the challenges and worldwide scientific studies aimed for the manufacturing of the fuel elements claddings tolerant to a loss of coolant accidents (Fukushima NPP, March 2011, Japan) for water-cooled reactors. The main research results obtained at NSC KIPT on the development of materials for fuel element claddings, tolerant to accidents with loss of coolant, are given. The structure and properties of the developed vacuum-arc chromium coatings were investigated. It is shown, that these coatings can be used as protective element for existing fuel claddings, made of zirconium alloys, in light-water reactors of the PWR and BWR types. Alloyed SiC-based ceramic was developed to replace zirconium-based fuel claddings. It has been established that doping of 0.5 wt% Cr into SiC leads to an increase in the ability to resist the formation of cracks (crack resistance) by 25 – 30%. The effect of Cr alloying on the corrosion resistance of SiC ceramics under conditions, simulating the medium of the first circuit of the VVER-1000 reactor, is analyzed. It was established that doping of even a small amount of Cr leads to a slowdown in corrosion processes in SiC ceramics. In order to create new material for fuel elements claddings Fe-Cr-Al-based alloys with the doping of alloying elements (Y, Zr and Mo) were also developed and studied. Obtained alloys showed high mechanical properties and resistance to high-temperature oxidation.

Abstract AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) recovery is considerably influenced by the nearby flow field and simulations of AUV in different motion paths in the wake of a submarine with a propeller are presented in this paper. A commercial CFD solver STAR CCM+ has been used to research the motion and flow characteristics of AUV, which using the advanced computational continuum mechanics algorithms. The DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) SUBOFF Submarine (L1 = 4.356m) propelled with INSEAN (Italian Ship Model Basin) E1619 propeller is used in this study, and the self-propulsion characteristics of the propeller at an incoming flow velocity of 2.75m/s are obtained through numerical simulation and results are compared with the available experimental data to prove the accuracy of the chosen investigation methodology. A grid/time-step convergence test is performed for verification study. AUV (L2 = 0.4356m) is a smaller-scale SUBOFF without a sail, which approaches the submarine in different motion paths in the submarine wake at a relative speed combined with the dynamic overlapping grid technology. The hydrodynamic performance of the AUV when approaching the submarine and the velocity distribution of the surrounding flow field are analyzed, which provides a useful reference for underwater recovery of the AUV.

The article describes a developed technique of a numerical simulation of the stress-strain state of complex-reinforced elements, which allows you to create models of double-span continuous. The performed experimental and theoretical studies allowed us to carry out the testing of the developed design model and to justify the reliability of the proposed numerical simulation methodology. The results of the experimental studies were compared with those of the theoretical studies. The theoretical calculus algorithm was developed by using the finite element method. Theoretical calculations were performed by using the mathematical-graphical environment software system LIRA-SOFT and the mathematical and computer program MATLAB. On the basis of the experimental research, the iso-fields of displacements and stresses in the materials of an eccentrically compressed beam with a small bend of the slab were constructed, which collapse behind the inclined narrow strip of concrete and displacements and stresses in the materials of the eccentrically stretched beam, which is destroyed due to the yield of the upper mounting armature.

Abstract In this paper, a NonStandard Finite Difference (NSFD) scheme is constructed, which can be used to determine numerical solutions for an epidemic model with vaccination. Here the NSFD method is employed to derive a set of difference equations for the epidemic model with vaccination. We show that difference equations have the same dynamics as the original differential system, such as the positivity of the solutions and the stability of the equilibria, without being restricted by the time step. Our proof of global stability utilizes the method of Lyapunov functions. Numerical simulation illustrates the effectiveness of our results

In milling process, surface topography is a significant factor that affects directly the surface integrity and constitutes a supplement to the form error associated with the workpiece deformation. Based on the tool machining paths and the trajectory equation of the cutting edge relative to the workpiece, a new and general iterative algorithm is developed here for the numerical simulation of the machined surface topography in multiaxis ball-end milling. The influences of machining parameters such as the milling modes, cutter runout, cutter inclination direction, and inclination angle upon the topography and surface roughness values are studied in detail. Compared with existing methods, the basic advantages and novelties of the proposed method can be resumed below. First, it is unnecessary to discretize the cutting edge and tool feed motion and rotation motion. Second, influences of cutting modes and cutter inclinations are studied systematically and explicitly for the first time. The generality of the algorithm makes it possible to calculate the pointwise topography value on any sculptured surface of the workpiece. Besides, the proposed method is proved to be more efficient in saving computing time than the time step method that is commonly used. Finally, some examples are presented and simulation results are compared with experimental ones.

Aiming at the problem of large deformation and instability failure and its control of soft coal and soft roof roadway under intense mining, laboratory experiments, theoretical calculations, Flac3D numerical simulation, borehole peeping, and pressure observation were used to study the deflection characteristics of the deviatoric stress of the gas tailgate and the distribution and failure characteristics of the plastic zone in the mining face considering the strain softening characteristics of the roof and coal of roadway, and then the truss anchor cable-control technology is proposed. The results show the following: (1) The intense mining influence on the working face will deflect the peak deviatoric stress zone (PDSZ) of the surrounding rock of the gas tailgate. The influence distance of PDSZ is about 20 m in advance and 60 m in lag; the PDSZ at the gob side of the roadway is located in the range of 3–5.5 m from the surface of the coal pillar, while the coal wall side is mainly located in the range of 3–4.5 m at the shoulder corner and bottom corner of the solid coal. (2) The intense mining in the working face caused the nonuniform expansion of the surrounding rock plastic area of the gas tailgate. The two shoulder angles of the roadway and the bottom of the coal pillar have the largest damage range, and the maximum damage location is the side angle of the coal pillar (5 m). Angle and bottom angle of coal pillar are the key points of support control. (3) The plastic failure line of the surrounding rock of the gas tailgate is always between the inner and outer contours of the PDSZ, and the rock mass in the PDSZ is in a stable and unstable transition state, so the range of anchor cable support should be cross plastic failure line. (4) The theoretical calculations and numerical simulation results agree well with the drilling peep results. Based on the deflection law of the PDSZ and the expansion characteristics of the plastic zone, a truss anchor cable supporting system with integrated locking and large-scale support function is proposed to jointly control the roof and the two sides, which effectively solves the problem of weak surrounding rock roadway under severe mining deformation control problems realizing safety and efficient production in coal mines under intense mining.

Numerical experiments can be used to study heavy particle dispersion by tracking particles through a numerically generated instantaneous turbulent flow field. In this manner, data can be generated to supplement physical experiments. To perform the numerical experiments efficiently and accurately, the time step used when tracking the particles through the fluid must be chosen correctly. After finding a suitable time step for one particular simulation, the time step must be reduced as the total integration time increases and as the free-fall velocity of the particle increases. Based on the numerical calculations, we suggest that the nonlinear drag be included in a numerical simulation if the ratio of the particle’s Stokes free-fall velocity to the fluid rms velocity is greater than two.
