Drought stress caused the decrease of pigment contents - chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, chlorophyll a/b ratio, total chlorophyll content and carotenoids content of leaves of five rice varieties (var. BRRI Dhan-30, BRRI Dhan-32, BRRI Dhan-34, BRRI Dhan-38 and BRRI Dhan-56). Among five rice varieties, BRRI Dhan- 56 showed the least decrease of pigment content under stress. It caused the decrease of protein content of leaves of five rice varieties whereas BRRI Dhan-56 showed the least decrease (3.64%) of protein content under stress. On the other hand, drought stress increased CAT and SOD activities in the leaf of five varieties of rice and BRRI Dhan-56 showed the highest increase of CAT (37.67%) and SOD (94.17%) activity under stress. It may be assumed that higher antioxidant enzymes activities (CAT and SOD) and less reduction of protein content were related to the mechanisms of drought tolerance in rice. It is indicated that BRRI Dhan- 56 may be drought tolerant while BRRI Dhan-30, BRRI Dhan-32, BRRI Dhan-34 and BRRI Dhan-38 were drought sensitive rice varieties. Drought tolerant rice variety is selected based on pigment content, protein content and antioxidant enzymes activities (CAT and SOD).

Ecotoxicological responses of cadmium (Cd) on seed germination, electrolyte leakage and soluble protein of Trifolium repens cv. Rivendel seeds were studied. Seeds were exposed to different Cd treatments with concentration of 0-1250 μmol·L-1 for seven days. In the present study, with the increasing Cd concentration, both of germination rate and germination vigor decreased. There was no significant reduce compared to the control under Cd concentration of 10 μmol·L-1. With the pollution levels strengthen to 1250 μmol·L-1, germination rate and germination vigor were significantly restrained. With the increasing Cd concentration, electrolyte leakage increased gradually. Electrolyte leakage reached nearly one times of the control under Cd concentration of 1250 μmol·L-1. Soluble protein content increased under Cd concentration of 10-50 μmol·L-1 and then decreased with Cd concentration increased continuously.

Abstract The effects of different concentrations (100,150,200,250 mg/L) and different particle sizes (0–75µm, 75–120µm, 120–150µm, 150–500µm) on soluble protein content, SOD and CAT activity, MDA content, chlorophyll a content and photosynthetic parameters of Microcystis flos-aquae were studied, the mechanism of the effect of suspended particulate matter on the physiology and biochemistry of Microcystis flos-aquae was discussed. The results showed that the soluble protein content of Microcystis flos-aquae did not change obviously after being stressed by suspended particles of different concentration/diameter. The SOD activity of Microcystis flos-aquae increased at first and then decreased with the increase of the concentration of suspended particulate matter. The SOD activity of Microcystis flos-aquae reached 28.03 U/mL when the concentration of suspended particulate matter was 100 mg/L. The CAT activity of Microcystis flos-aquae increased with the increase of the concentration of suspended particles, and reached the maximum value of 12.45 U/mgprot in the concentration group of 250 mg/L, showing a certain dose-effect. The effect of small particle size on SOD, CAT and MDA of Microcystis flos-aquae was more significant than that of large particle size. The larger the concentration and the smaller the particle size, the stronger the attenuation of light and the lower the content of chlorophyll a. Both Fv/Fm and Fv/F0 of Microcystis flos-aquae increased at first and then decreased under different concentration/size of suspended particles. The relative electron transfer rate gradually returned to the normal level with the passage of time. There was no significant difference in α value between treatment group and control group, ETRmax and Ik decreased.

Leaf extract of Citrus aurantifolia exhibited remarkable inhibitor effect on the radial mycelial growth of Neurospora crassa. The extract also showed mutagenic effect and atleast six morphological mutants of the fungus were detected including albino (al 243), vigorous (vg 117), fluffy (fl 220), colonial (cl 232), conidial band (con. band 171) and dirty (dir 83). The mutants were used for estimation of soluble protein in comparison with the wild type (Ema). The soluble protein content increased to some extent in case of the mutants con. band 171 (192.86 μg/ml), cl 232 (188.57 μg/ml) and vg 117 (186.43 μg/ml) as compared to the wild type (182.14 μg/ml). On the other hand, the soluble protein content was remarkably decreased in case of the mutant al 243 (94.28 μg/ml), which was about 50% less than the control. This indicates that the leaf extract not only effect colony morphology but possesses profound effect on growth and metabolism of the fungus.
