The synergistic effects of zinc oxide (ZnO) Micro/Nano particles simultaneously filled in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) on the space charge characteristics and electrical properties has been investigated by melt blending micro-scale and nanoscale ZnO additive particles into LDPE matrix to prepare Micro-ZnO, Nano-ZnO, and Micro-Nano ZnO/LDPE composites. The morphological structures of composite samples are characterized by Polarizing Light Microscopy (PLM), and the space charge accumulations and insulation performances are correlated in the analyses with Pulse Electronic Acoustic (PEA), DC breakdown field strength, and conductance tests. It is indicated that both the micro and nano ZnO fillers can introduce plenty of heterogeneous nuclei into the LDPE matrix so as to impede the LDPE spherocrystal growth and regularize the crystalline grains in neatly-arranged morphology. By filling microparticles together with nanoparticles of ZnO additives, the space charge accumulations are significantly inhibited under an applied DC voltage and the minimum initial residual charges with the slowest charge decaying rate have been achieved after an electrode short connection. While the micro-nano ZnO/LDPE composites acquire the lowest conductivity, the breakdown strengths of the ZnO/LDPE nanocomposite and micro-nano composite are, respectively, 13.7% and 3.4% higher than that of the neat LDPE material.

This work was intended to provide an understanding of the effect of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) on the mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The impact resistance and the tensile properties of low-density LDPE/MCC composites were investigated. The weight fraction of MCC was varied at (0, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt%). The obtained blends were then used to prepare the required tensile and impact testing samples by hot compression molding technique. It has been found that MCC has a strong influence on the mechanical properties of LDPE. At a low MCC weight fraction, there was a little improvement in the ultimate strength, fracture stress, and elongation at break, but at a high MCC weight fraction, the tensile properties were deteriorated and reduced significantly. The addition of 1 wt% MCC to LDPE enhanced the mentioned properties by 10, 25, and 6%, respectively. While at 30 wt% MCC, these properties were lowered by 36, 25, and 96%. The elastic modulus of LDPE composites was improved on all MCC weight fractions used in the study, at 20 wt% MCC, an increase in the elastic modulus by 12 folds was achieved. On the other hand and compared with the impact strength of pure LDPE, the addition of MCC particles enhanced the impact strength, the highest value obtained was for LDPE composites filled with 10 wt% MCC where the impact strength enhanced by two folds.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composites reinforced with finely powdered waste glass were identified as a potential material for 3D printed structures for use in low-duty frictional applications. A recently published 3D printing model was used to calculate the limits in the filament feed rate and printing speed. Tribological tests (pin-on-disc method) of the printed composites were performed for different print-path directions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was performed on the samples and the composites showed a higher crystallinity compared with LDPE, which partially explains the higher elastic modulus of the composites determined during static tensile tests. Using a fine glass powder as reinforcement improved the wear resistance of LDPE by 50% due to the formation of a sliding film on the sample’s surface. An evident effect of friction direction vs. the printed path direction on wear was found; which was likely related to differences in the removal of friction products from the friction area for different print-path directions. The LDPE composites with fine waste glass particles are promising materials for low-duty frictional applications and should be the subject of further research.

By means of magnetization treatments at ambient temperature and elevated temperatures, the nano- and micron-bismuth ferrate/low density polyethylene (BiFeO3/LDPE) dielectric composites are developed to explore the material processing method to modify the crystalline morphology, magnetic and dielectric properties. The magnetic field treatment can induce the dipole in the LDPE macromolecular chain which leads to preferred orientation of polyethylene crystal grains to the direction of the magnetization field. The surface morphology of the materials measured by atomic force microscope (AFM) implies that the LDPE macromolecular chains in BiFeO3/LDPE composites have been orderly arranged and form thicker lamellae accumulated with a larger spacing after high temperature magnetization, resulting in the increased dimension and orientation of spherulites. The residual magnetization intensities of BiFeO3/LDPE composites have been significantly improved by magnetization treatments at ambient temperature. After this magnetization at ambient temperature, the MR of nano- and micron-BiFeO3/LDPE composites approach to 4.415 × 10−3 and 0.690 × 10−3 emu/g, respectively. The magnetic moments of BiFeO3 fillers are arranged parallel to the magnetic field direction, leading to appreciable enhancement of the magnetic interactions between BiFeO3 fillers, which will inhibit the polarization of the electric dipole moments at the interface between BiFeO3 fillers and the LDPE matrix. Therefore, magnetization treatment results in the lower dielectric constant and higher dielectric loss of BiFeO3/LDPE composites. It is proven that the magnetic and dielectric properties of polymer dielectric composites can be effectively modified by the magnetization treatment in the melt blending process of preparing composites, which is expected to provide a technical strategy for developing magnetic polymer dielectrics.
