Abstract Typical features of seismicity inherent to the period prior to the strong earthquake occurrence are examined using the regional and world-wide earthquake catalogs by the method of construction of the Generalized vicinity of a large earthquake (GVLE). These features are foreshock power-law cascade, the weak long-term background increase in seismic activity, and the definite clustering of the main events. Worth to note, that all these features appear to indicate the loss of a stability of a system, without any reference to the physical mechanism of development of the instability. Thus, these features are expected to occur in connection with the bifurcation points in systems of other physical nature, examples of such behavior are given. Besides, a tendency of a decrease in earthquakes depth in the close GVLE vicinity was found. This precursor feature has a specific character and evidences in favor of a fluid involvement in the mechanism of earthquake occurrence.

AbstractConsumerism is a growing phenomenon in U.S. health care, yet its exercise is still inhibited by powerful forces within the medical community. Despite the neuroscientific framework that stresses the commonalities between mental and physical illness, consumerism is even more problematic and difficult in mental health care than in other areas of health care. People with severe mental illness and their advocates must contend with limited public understanding of neurobiological disorders, poor definitions of effective treatment, and a paucity of outcome data, especially from prospective randomized and long-term studies. The only clear way for consumerism to grow in mental health care is for its advocates to align themselves with the neuroscientific revolution and to demand that effective and equitable treatment programs be created based on the documented evidence of the physical nature of neurobiological disorders.

<p>On April 6th 2009 (01:32 UTC) strong earthquake of magnitude MW6.1 occurred near the city of L’Aquila in the Abruzzo region in the Central Apennines of Italy. Due to the extensional processes the Abruzzo region is characterized by prominent historical seismicity. However, before the 2009 event the background seismic activity is characterised as sparse and mostly clustered in space and time. The general lack of events, especially small magnitude events before the 2009 event motivated us to study the long-term near-fault seismicity before the large earthquake occurrence. To achieve this we first have to extend the existing catalog. We take into consideration the data from the AQU (42.354, 13.405) station that has been recorded in the city of L’Aquila, near Paganica fault responsible for the 2009 event, during an extensive period of 29-years, 19 years before the event itself. The catalog extension is performed by applying the two-stage convolutional neural network pipeline for earthquake detection and characterisation (epicentral distance and magnitude) using three component signal station waveforms. The algorithm allows us to successfully detect ~800 local events (less than 10 km from the AQU station) in the period 1990-2009. We here present a detailed analysis of this catalog including waveforms characterization to derive new insights about the long term preparation processes(es) occuring before the 2009 Mw6.1 earthquake.</p>

The Internet, particularly through the application of World Wide Web (WWW) technology, has proved to be a very attractive medium for publishing. However, the difficulties of finding appropriate information online and then of ensuring its long term accessibility have created problems for libraries. Practices that work for books and other printed materials do not always translate directly to online materials. The National Library of Australia's PANDORA project has been set up to develop policies and procedures for ensuring long term access to significant Australian publications which are accessible only in an online environment, and to establish and maintain a permanent archive ofthat material.

In this paper we are presenting a simple simulation of the Internet World-Wide Web, where one observes the appearance of web pages belonging to different web sites, covering a number of different thematic topics and possessing links to other web pages. The goal of our simulation is to reproduce the form of the observed World-Wide Web and of its growth, using a small number of simple assumptions. In our simulation, existing web pages may generate new ones as follows: First, each web page is equipped with a topic concerning its contents. Second, links between web pages are established according to common topics. Next, new web pages may be randomly generated and subsequently they might be equipped with a topic and be assigned to web sites. By repeated iterations of these rules, our simulation appears to exhibit the observed structure of the World-Wide Web and, in particular, a power law type of growth. In order to visualise the network of web pages, we have followed N. Gilbert's (1997) methodology of scientometric simulation, assuming that web pages can be represented by points in the plane. Furthermore, the simulated graph is found to possess the property of small worlds, as it is the case with a large number of other complex networks.

The present study is complied with the topical theme “name in the text” and devoted to the problems of how precedent names as the text-forming elements function in the poems and prose works of Marina Tsvetaeva within the framework of free indirect discourse. The authors study various methods and functions of personal names. The authors make conclusions concerning the frequency of precedent names and the specific character of intertextual elements in Tsvetaeva’s text, which, on the one hand, complicates the perception of the text, but on the other hand, promotes including both the poet and the reader into the world-wide cultural and spiritual environment. The ways of introducing the name and the persona, especially within free indirect discourse, specifies the further existence of the name / or its absence in the text.

Martin and Walker ((1997) J. Appl. Prob. 34, 657–670) proposed the power-law ρ(v) = c|v|-β, |v| ≥ 1, as a correlation model for stationary time series with long-memory dependence. A straightforward proof of their conjecture on the permissible range of c is given, and various other models for long-range dependence are discussed. In particular, the Cauchy family ρ(v) = (1 + |v/c|α)-β/α allows for the simultaneous fitting of both the long-term and short-term correlation structure within a simple analytical model. The note closes with hints at the fast and exact simulation of fractional Gaussian noise and related processes.

Abstract. We found the possible correlation between the precursory pattern of tidal triggering of earthquakes and the crustal heterogeneities, which is of particular importance to the researchers in earthquake prediction and earthquake hazard prevention. We investigated the connection between the tidal variations and earthquake occurrence in the Liyang, Wunansha, Cangshan, Wenan, Luquan and Yaoan regions of China. Most of the regions show a higher correlation with tidal triggering in several years preceding the large or destructive earthquakes compared to other times, indicating that the tidal triggering may inherently relate to the nucleation of the destructive earthquakes during this time. In addition, the analysis results indicate that the Liyang, Cangshan and Luquan regions, with stronger heterogeneity, show statistically significant effects of tidal triggering preceding the large or destructive earthquakes, while the Wunansha, Wenan and Yaoan regions, with relatively weak heterogeneity, show statistically insignificant effects of it, signifying that the precursory pattern of tidal triggering of earthquakes in these six regions is possibly related to the heterogeneities of the crustal rocks. The above results suggest that when people try to find the potential earthquake hazardous areas or make middle–long-term earthquake forecasting by means of precursory pattern of the tidal triggering, the crustal heterogeneity in these areas has to be taken into consideration for the purpose of increasing the prediction efficiency. If they do not consider the influence of crustal heterogeneity on the tidal triggering of earthquakes, the prediction efficiency might greatly decrease.
