Abstract In this world with rapid development, durable and fast construction techniques lead to the invention of composite materials that are robust and advantageous over conventional materials. Recently invented Concrete-filled steel tubular members are the composite members used in civil engineering works to replace conventional steel and concrete members. This paper deals with an overview of the experimental performance of various types of composite members such as columns, short columns, stub columns, beam-columns, and slender columns deals with various loads such as axial compression, flexural load, cyclic bending, long-term sustained load, torsional load, and impact load. Effects due to the variation in the parameters like steel and concrete strength, diameter to thickness ratio, axial load level, shapes of tubes of these composite members on load-carrying capacity, flexural stiffness, ductility, torsional capacity, and cyclic performance of these members are discussed in this paper. The future scope is mentioned for study related to these composite members in the paper.

The stability and strength of slender Reinforced Concrete (RC) columns depend directly on the flexural stiffness EI, which is a major parameter in strain calculations including those with bending and axial load. Due to the non-linearity of the stress-strain curve of concrete, the effective bending stiffness EI always remains variable. Numerical simulations were performed for square and L-shaped reinforced concrete sections of slender columns subjected to an eccentric axial force to estimate the variation of El resulting from the actual behavior of the column, based on the moment-curvature relationship. Seventy thousand (70000) hypothetical slender columns, each with a different combination of variables, were used to investigate the main variables that affect the EI of RC slender columns. Using linear regression analysis, a new simple and linear expression of EI was developed. Slenderness, axial load level, and concrete strength have been identified as the most important factors affecting effective stiffness. Finally, the comparison between the results of the new equation and the methods proposed by ACI-318 and Euro Code-2 was carried out in connection with the experimental results of the literature. A good agreement of the results was found.

With the rapid development of the world’s transportation infrastructure, many long-span bridges were constructed in recent years, especially in China. However, these bridges are easily subjected to various damages due to dynamic loads (such as wind-, earthquake-, and vehicle-induced vibration) or environmental factors (such as corrosion). Therefore, structural health monitoring (SHM) is vital to guarantee the safety of bridges in their service lives. With its wide frequency response range, fast response, simple preparation process, ease of processing, low cost, and other advantages, the piezoelectric transducer is commonly employed for the SHM of bridges. This paper summarizes the application of piezoelectric materials for the SHM of bridges, including the monitoring of the concrete strength, bolt looseness, steel corrosion, and grouting density. For each problem, the application of piezoelectric materials in different research methods is described. The related data processing methods for four types of bridge detection are briefly summarized, and the principles of each method in practical application are listed. Finally, issues to be studied when using piezoelectric materials for monitoring are discussed, and future application prospects and development directions are presented.

abstract: The creep of concrete promotes strains over time in structural members kept under sustained load. It causes the stress decrease on the concrete and the steel stress increase in reinforced concrete members. The moisture content and temperature influence significantly such phenomenon. The creep strains model of the NBR 6118/2014 [1] is, applicable, solely, to those cases of constant stress magnitudes. Reinforced concrete members exhibit variations on the stress magnitudes and, in this way, requires the use of an alternative model for the prediction of the creep strains as the so known the State Model. This report refers itself to temperature influence analysis upon creep strains of reinforced concrete structural members. The results have revealed that temperature speeds up the creep effects and, in this way, the steel yielding caused by the stress increase on the reinforcement bars occurs at earlier ages.

This paper attempts to explore the effects of recycled coarse aggregate content, steel fiber content, and concrete strength on the axial compressive behavior of steel fiber-reinforced recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) concrete-filled circular steel stub columns. A total of 14 short columns are tested. The results show that using RCA in concrete will reduce the bearing capacity of short columns, but the increase in steel fiber content and concrete strength can eliminate this shortcoming. Not only that, the concrete strength has a great influence on the ductility and stiffness of the specimen.

Composite materials like glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) is becoming widely acceptable to be used as a reinforcing material due to its high ultimate tensile strength-to-weight ratio and excellent resistance to corrosion. However, the seismic behavior of GFRP-reinforced concrete columns has not been fully investigated yet. This paper presents the results of a numerical analysis of full-size GFRP-RC rectangular columns under cyclic loading. The simulated column depicts the lower part of a building column between the foundation and the point of contra-flexure at the mid-height of the column. GFRP reinforcement properties and concrete modeling based on fracture energy have been incorporated in the numerical model. Experimental validation has been used to examine the accuracy of the constructed finite element models (FEMs) using a commercially available software. The validated FEM was used to perform a parametric study, considering several concrete strength values and axial load levels, to study its influence on the performance of the GFRP-reinforced concrete columns under cyclic loading. It was concluded that the hysteretic dissipation capacity deteriorates under high axial load level due to severe softening of the concrete. The FE results showed a substantial improvement of the lateral load-carrying capacities by increasing concrete compressive strength.

The dynamic loads acting on concrete-filled steel tubular members under axial impacts by rigid bodies were studied herein by FEM. The whole impact process was simulated and the time history of the impact load was obtained. The effects of eight factors on the axial impact load were studied; these factors were the impact speed, mass ratio, axial pressure ratio, steel ratio, slenderness ratio, concrete strength, impact position, and boundary conditions. Besides this, the effects of concrete creep on the impact load were also considered by changing the material parameters of the concrete. The results show that axial impact load changes with time as a triangle. The peak value of impact load increases and the impact resistance improves with the growth of the axial pressure ratio, steel ratio, slenderness ratio, and concrete strength after creep occurs. As the eccentricity of the axial impact acting on a concrete-filled steel tubular member increases, the peak value of the impact load decreases. The enhancement of constraints at both ends of the member can improve the impact resistance. The creep reduction coefficients for the peak axial impact load of a concrete-filled steel tubular member under axial compression and considering the creep effect over 6 months and 30 years are 0.60 and 0.55, respectively. A calculation formula for the peak value of impact load was suggested based on the existing formula, and its accuracy was proved by finite element calculation in this study.
