What are student expectations in a traditional course versus a distance learning course? The authors analyze student course selection and expected outcomes from data collected in an undergraduate marketing course at a public university in the Northeast. Key findings reveal that students generally have a favorable predisposition towards online coursework despite their beliefs that online courses require more work and have lower learning outcomes. Further, this case study provides an initial step in better understanding student expectations in online courses as well as in the traditional classroom.

The purpose of this study was to explore the learners’ perception and preference on the open and distance learning mode at the Institute of Adult Education in Tanzania through the case study design. The study population was 96 ODL students from Geita Learning Centre. The sample comprised of 50 students selected through simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using interview and a questionnaire and was analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic content method. The result revealed that ODL mode is most suitable for in-service, married and aged population because it allows them to study while working. The perception of learners on ODL was positive. Respondents were comfortable with content of the modules and learner support services provided. They were also satisfied with face-to-face sessions and tuition fee charges modality. The study therefore recommends that learners’ perception on the open and distance learning should be looked critically by developing approaches that will enhance the program and address challenges associated with distance learning. The findings of this study should assist education practitioners to design and implement effective learning programs based on perception and preference of learners. ODL stakeholders should consider all the factors in relation to perception and preferences of learners while developing more open and distance learning course for the learners.

As colleges and universities develop distance learning programs, administrators have scrambled to provide on-line services for distance learners. But do learners need such services? The present study examined how important services were for distance learners and how satisfied they were with the services provided to them. Data were collected through a national on-line survey and threaded discussion. Results revealed that services overall were not particularly important to participants, though there were significant differences by age and class status.

The educational journey in postgraduate programs is linked to the actors, processes and results, setting the tone for different approaches from the perspective of characterization, development and evaluation. It is summarized in a sequential manner in four stages: entry to the program, progress within the program, and the final educational stretch, where the instructor/tutor plays an important part and obtaining the diploma or degree. The goal of this research was to evaluate, using the students’ perceptions, formative experiences as a result of their academic journey in postgraduate programs within education in Northern Mexico. We have used a case study based on the focus groups technique, applied to a sample of cases comprised of students enrolled in their final educational stage. The information was analyzed using inductive data analysis. The main results were grouped into three meta categories: (1) development of professional skills for the successful design of the intervention proposal, which unfolded into four categories; (2) the role of the tutor during the formative process, consisting of four analysis categories and (3) contributions of the teaching staff in their profession, consisting of two categories. These trends also evidence the formative abundance in the personal, academic and social training context of the students.
