 Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the bioactive compound presence, in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of Phoenix pusilla root extract.Methods: Extracts were prepared with ethanol, acetone, and hexane by Soxhlet method. Then, the extracts were checked for phytochemicals presence or absence. In vitro antioxidant activity was analyzed by checking its scavenging ability and reducing property. Antibacterial was assayed by well diffusion method and antifungal activity using sabouraud dextrose broth.Results: The results showed that the ethanolic root extract contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponin, tannin, and triterpenoids have potent antioxidant activity and inhibitory activity against certain Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and fungi.Conclusion: The present study revealed the significance of the plant as a drug. Further, in vivo study is needed to be used as curative agent for different health illness.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine and metabolic disorder characterized by the defect in insulin secretion or insulin action or both. The association between diabetes mellitus and oxidative stress is well established. Cucurbitaceae is the largest family containing 120 genera mostly grown for its sweet and juicy fruit in warm climates all over the world. In the present work ethanolic extracts of the seeds of Trichosanthes cucumerina Linn (Chichinno), Lagenaria siceraria (Lauka), Cucurbita pepo (Pharsi), Luffa aegiptiaca (Ghiraula), and Benincasa hispida (Kubindo) collected from Western Nepal has been evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant activity and in vivo hypoglycemic effects. Methods: In vitro antioxidant activity was assessed by using DPPH free radical scavenging activities and their IC50 values were calculated. In vivo hypoglycemic effect was examined on normoglycemic rats. The clinical significance of ethanolic extract at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight was investigated in 0, 30, 60, 120 and 180 minutes of oral administration. Metformin treated group was used as the positive control. Results: For DPPH radical scavenging action, the IC50 values of Trichosanthes cucumerina, Luffa aegiptiaca, Benincasa  hispida, Cucurbita pepo, Lagenaria siceraria were found to be 60.72, 127.73, 49.63, 98.16 and 52.46 µg/ml respectively which were compared to the IC50 value of ascorbic acid (Positive control) which was found to be 38.11 µg/ml. The extracts of Benincasa hispida, and were having higher antioxidant activity and tested for in vivo hypoglycemic activity.In vivo administration of two doses of ethanolic extract of Lagenaria siceraria reduced the level of blood glucose while the best result was obtained at 250 mg/kg. Conclusions: Present study revealed promising antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity of ethanolic extract of Lagenaria siceraria. The further exploration of Lagenaria siceraria for its effective use in the traditional medicinal system is essential.

Objective: Objective of the present study was to carry out in vivo anti-inflammatory and in vitro antioxidant activity of methanol extract of aerial part of the Blumea eriantha DC belonging to family Asteraceae.Methods: The shade dried aerial part of B. eriantha (0.5 kg) was powdered and extracted with methanol (1.5 x 3L) at room temperature (24h x 3). After filtration combined all the three extracts and were concentrated on rotary evaporator under reduced pressure at 40 °C, thereby providing crude methanol extract which was subsequently employed for further studies. Anti-inflammatory effect was studied by carrageenan-induced paw edema model in rats at dose level 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg. Acute oral toxicity study and in vitro antioxidant potential of the extract was also studied. The in vitro antioxidant activity of methanol extract of aerial part of Blumea eriantha DC was evaluated against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl (OH) radicalscavenging and reducing power assays.Results: The results indicate that methanol extract of Blumea eriantha (BEME, 400 mg/kg) exhibited significant inhibition (p<0.001) of increase in paw edema at 5th h. IC50 value of BEME showed significant antioxidant activity. The extract exhibits promising free radical scavenging effect of DPPH, H2O2, OH and reducing power in a dose-dependent manner up to 100µg/ml concentration while the reference standard Ascorbic acid demonstrated more scavenging potential than the methanol extract of Blumea eriantha The methanol extract was found to be safe at the dose of 2000 mg/kg.Conclusion: The results of the experimental study confirmed that methanol extract of Blumea eriantha DC possesses significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.

An ethanol was with the<br />highest frequency as a solvent for extraction purpose.
