Consider a general linear Hamiltonian system ∂ t u = J L u \partial _{t}u=JLu in a Hilbert space X X . We assume that   L : X → X ∗ \ L:X\rightarrow X^{\ast } induces a bounded and symmetric bi-linear form ⟨ L ⋅ , ⋅ ⟩ \left \langle L\cdot ,\cdot \right \rangle on X X , which has only finitely many negative dimensions n − ( L ) n^{-}(L) . There is no restriction on the anti-self-dual operator J : X ∗ ⊃ D ( J ) → X J:X^{\ast }\supset D(J)\rightarrow X . We first obtain a structural decomposition of X X into the direct sum of several closed subspaces so that L L is blockwise diagonalized and J L JL is of upper triangular form, where the blocks are easier to handle. Based on this structure, we first prove the linear exponential trichotomy of e t J L e^{tJL} . In particular, e t J L e^{tJL} has at most algebraic growth in the finite co-dimensional center subspace. Next we prove an instability index theorem to relate n − ( L ) n^{-}\left ( L\right ) and the dimensions of generalized eigenspaces of eigenvalues of   J L \ JL , some of which may be embedded in the continuous spectrum. This generalizes and refines previous results, where mostly J J was assumed to have a bounded inverse. More explicit information for the indexes with pure imaginary eigenvalues are obtained as well. Moreover, when Hamiltonian perturbations are considered, we give a sharp condition for the structural instability regarding the generation of unstable spectrum from the imaginary axis. Finally, we discuss Hamiltonian PDEs including dispersive long wave models (BBM, KDV and good Boussinesq equations), 2D Euler equation for ideal fluids, and 2D nonlinear Schrödinger equations with nonzero conditions at infinity, where our general theory applies to yield stability or instability of some coherent states.

Purpose There are rising issues with the delivery performance of Malaysian low-cost housing (LCH) because the occupants are inclined to perceive safety hazards. Among the safety issues raised during the occupancy period in LCH are structural instability and falling building fragments. Without defining the occupants’ requirements in the early housing development, it is hard to determine the prevailing safety factors. Hence, this paper emphasises the application of post occupancy evaluation (POE) that incorporates participation from the occupants as a tool to assess the safety performance of Malaysian LCH. The purpose of this study is to develop a framework of POE integrated with safety elements for Malaysian LCH. Design/methodology/approach This research was carried out with a quantitative method using questionnaires as the survey instrument involving safety inspection survey and satisfaction surveys. The inspection survey and Occupants’ Satisfaction Survey were carried out based on 24 LCH projects located in the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In total, 380 samples were used for both surveys. Statistical correlation was used to affirm the incorporation of occupants’ participation towards safety performance in the POE approach. The Spearman’s rho (r) correlation was used in the analysis for variables in both surveys which consisted of an ordinal scale. Findings The correlation result revealed that there was a significant relationship among all safety attributes between safety performance and occupants’ satisfaction. Therefore, a framework consisting of POE and safety elements has been proposed based on the significance of both variables. The development process of the framework used the vital phases of POE and inputs of safety elements which consisted of three main stages: planning phase as safety input, conducting phase as safety process and applying phase as safety output. Research limitations/implications The surveys were limited to the rented People’s Housing Programme located in Kuala Lumpur and not extensively to all LCH programmes in Malaysia. The surveys were also not carried out to other LCH programmes such as the Hardcore Poor Housing Programmes and the low- to medium-cost housing because of the limitations of time and resources. Practical implications This research has introduced a new dimension for safety performance assessment in LCH using the POE as the safety performance tool. By allowing the participation of occupants for safety assessment, this study stresses the fundamental concept of POE by highlighting the importance of obtaining feedback from the building occupants. Originality/value As a proactive measure, the proposed framework was introduced as an improved procedure to inspect safety performance in LCH during occupancy, in lieu of the current assessment process. Receiving complaints from the occupants after the occurrence of incidents is demarcated as a reactive approach, whereas the current inspection survey does not incorporate the occupants’ participation. Feedback from occupants is not a routine of building assessment during occupancy; hence, using POE is generally a new dimension of safety performance in Malaysian LCH.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a tool with which to understand the power existing in relations between sports organisations. This research proposes a tool will draw from the work of Machiavel (1513/2000), Galbraith (1985) and Baechler (1978). This tool is composed by three dimensions which guarantee the possessor an absolute power, so avoiding the threat of overthrow by discontented individuals. Design/methodology/approach – A case study of the America's Cup 2007, held in Valencia, Spain, will seek to shed light on the theoretical conceptions of various authors. The America's Cup is one of the world's oldest competitive sporting events. A semantic analysis of the resulting data via Alceste and Wordmapper software, will highlight the particular power present in relations. Findings – The importance of this research, in addition to finding a type of power in a precise case, is essentially to verify the functioning of the model of three dimensions, given its triangular form. Practical implications – Organisations could acquire a better understanding of power present in their relations that they maintain and hence adapt their behaviour according to the strategy they seek to employ. International sporting events constitute a field where stakes are high, and each entity must work hard to put in place a set of strategies to ensure profit. Originality/value – Sport as an area of research, sport is justified by recent developments in the world of sporting special events management, where weighty power struggles have considerably increased.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to concern with a reliable treatment of the (2+1)-dimensional and the (3+1)-dimensional logarithmic Boussinesq equations (BEs). The author uses the sense of the Gaussian solitary waves to determine these gaussons. The study confirms that models characterized by logarithmic nonlinearity give gaussons solitons of distinct physical structures. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed technique, as presented in this work has been shown to be very efficient for solving nonlinear equations with logarithmic nonlinearity. Findings – The (2+1) and the (3+1)-dimensional BEs were examined as well. The examined models feature interesting results in propagation of waves and fluid flow. Research limitations/implications – The paper presents a new efficient algorithm for the higher dimensional logarithmic BEs. Practical implications – The work shows the effect of logarithmic nonlinearity compared to other nonlinearities where standard solitons appear in the last case. Social implications – The work will benefit audience who are willing to examine the effect of logarithmic nonlinearity. Originality/value – The paper presents a new efficient algorithm for the higher dimensional logarithmic BEs.

ABSTRACTNucleoid-associated proteins (NAPs), which fold bacterial DNA and influence gene transcription, are considered to be global transcriptional regulators of genes on both plasmids and the host chromosome. Incompatibility P-7 group plasmid pCAR1 carries genes encoding three NAPs: H-NS family protein Pmr, NdpA-like protein Pnd, and HU-like protein Phu. In this study, the effects of single or double disruption ofpmr,pnd, andphuwere assessed in hostPseudomonas putidaKT2440. Whenpmrandpndorpmrandphuwere simultaneously disrupted, both the segregational stability and the structural stability of pCAR1 were markedly decreased, suggesting that Pmr, Pnd, and Phu act as plasmid-stabilizing factors in addition to their established roles in replication and partition systems. The transfer frequency of pCAR1 was significantly decreased in these double mutants. The segregational and structural instability of pCAR1 in the double mutants was recovered by complementation ofpmr, whereas no recovery of transfer deficiency was observed. Comprehensive phenotype comparisons showed that the host metabolism of carbon compounds, which was reduced by pCAR1 carriage, was restored by disruption of the NAP gene(s). Transcriptome analyses of mutants indicated that transcription of genes for energy production, conversion, inorganic ion transport, and metabolism were commonly affected; however, how their products altered the phenotypes of mutants was not clear. The findings of this study indicated that Pmr, Pnd, and Phu act synergistically to affect pCAR1 replication, maintenance, and transfer, as well as to alter the host metabolic phenotype.

Despite of the popularity of interactive movie trailers, rigorous research on one of the most apparent features of these interfaces – the level of user control – has been scarce. This study explored the effects of user control on users’ immersion and enjoyment of the movie trailers, moderated by the content type. We conducted a 2 (high user control versus low user control) × 2 (drama film trailer versus documentary film trailer) mixed-design factorial experiment. The results showed that the level of user control over movie trailer interfaces decreased users’ immersion when the trailer had an element of traditional story structure, such as a drama film trailer. Participants in the high user control condition answered that they were less fascinated with, absorbed in, focused on, mentally involved with, and emotionally affected by the movie trailer than participants in the low user control condition only with the drama movie trailer. The negative effects of user control on the level of immersion for the drama trailer translated into users’ enjoyment. The impact of user control over interfaces on immersion and enjoyment varies depending on the nature of the media content, which suggests a possible trade-off between the level of user control and entertainment outcomes.

For many solitary wave applications, various approximate models have been proposed. Certainly, the most famous solitary wave equations are the K-dV, BBM and Boussinesq equations. The K-dV equation was originally derived to describe shallow water waves in a rectangular channel. Surprisingly, the equation also models ion-acoustic waves and magneto-hydrodynamic waves in plasmas, waves in elastic rods, equatorial planetary waves, acoustic waves on a crystal lattice, and more. If we describe all of the above situation, we must be needed a solution function of their governing equations. The Tan-cot method is applied to obtain exact travelling wave solutions to the generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gK-dV) equation and generalized Benjamin-Bona- Mahony (BBM) equation which are important equations to evaluate wide variety of physical applications. In this paper we described the soliton behavior of gK-dV and BBM equations by analytical system especially using Tan-cot method and shown in graphically. In this paper, Homotopy analysis method is applied to the nonlinear coupleddifferential equations of classical Boussinesq system. We have applied Homotopy analysis method (HAM) for the application problems in [1, 2, 3, 4]. We have also plotted Domb-Sykes plot for the region of convergence. We have applied Pade for the HAM series to identify the singularity and reflect it in the graph. The HAM is a analytical technique which is used to solve non-linear problems to generate a convergent series. HAM gives complete freedom to choose the initial approximation of the solution, it is the auxiliary parameter h which gives us a convenient way to guarantee the convergence of homotopy series solution. It seems that moreartificial degrees of freedom implies larger possibility to gain better approximations by HAM.

 There is scant research-based evidence on the development and adoption of open access (OA) and institutional repositories (IRs) in Africa, and in Kenya in particular. This article reports on a study that attempted to fill that gap and provide feedback on the various OA projects and advocacy work currently underway in universities and research institutions in Kenya and in other developing countries. The article presents the findings of a descriptive study that set out to evaluate the current state of IRs in Kenya. Webometric approaches and interviews with IR managers were used to collect the data for the study. The findings showed that Kenya has made some progress in adopting OA with a total of 12 IRs currently listed in the Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) and five mandatory self-archiving policies listed in the Registry of Open Access Repositories Mandatory Archiving Policies (ROARMAP). Most of the IRs are owned by universities where theses and dissertations constitute the majority of the content type followed by journal articles. The results on the usage and impact of materials deposited in Kenyan IRs indicated that the most viewed publications in the repositories also received citations in Google Scholar, thereby signifying their impact and importance. The results also showed that there was a considerable interest in Swahili language publications among users of the repositories in Kenya.
