6. The future of superstition

People have been fascinated with superstition for a very long time, and that fascination is unlikely to end soon. ‘The future of superstition’ looks at the various areas of superstition research undertaken by psychologists and sociologists. Perhaps the most popular area of research today is the role of superstition in consumer choice. This effort has probably been encouraged by the rapid growth of the Chinese consumer market. Superstition is a transactional concept. It has no inherent meaning of its own and only gains meaning in relation to some different, more accepted world-view. Today that more accepted view is most often the accumulated knowledge of science, but, as we have seen, fashions can change.

English
Involvement of farmers as actors to support extension activities have been underway for a long time with various approaches. In Indonesia, it started from the involvement of Kontak Tani (Advanced Farmers) in Supra Insus era, then farmer to farmer extension at P4S, as well as Penyuluh Swakarsa (Independent Extension Workers)” (in 2004), and the latest is Penyuluh Swadaya (Self-Help Agricultural Extension Workers) since 2008. The existence of self-help farmer extension workers are recognized since the enactment of Law No. 16/2006 on Extension System of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries. However, even though it runs nearly 10 years, the development of the role of self-help farmer extension workers is not optimal. This paper is a review of various posts including the recent research on self-help farmer extension workers and it aims to study the potential and problems of self-help farmer extension workers. It shows that the self-help farmer extension workers have a self-help capabilities and distinctive social position and they have to get right role. Appropriate support should be given to self-help farmer extension workers as the agricultural extension worker in the future and it must be distinguished between the government and private extension workers.

AbstractBy Wednesday, July 22, 2020, the coronavirus had killed over 611,000 people and infected over fourteen million globally. It devastated lives and will continue to do so for a long time to come; the economic consequences of the pandemic are only just starting to materialize. This makes it a challenging time to write about the new common. However, we need to start somewhere. At some point, we need to reflect on our own roles, the roles of our institutions, the importance of our economy, and the future fabric of everyday life. In this chapter, I will discuss one minor—and compared to the current crisis seemingly inconsequential—aspect of the new common: I will discuss my worry that we are on the verge of missing the opportunity to properly (re-)define the role of the sciences as we move from our old to our new common.

This article examines the role of Prophecy and divination in the success of the Lumpa Church of Alice Mulenga Lenshina in Zambia. Concurring with James Amanze (2013), the article argues that the rapid growth of Christianity in Africa is to a large extent due to its engagement with prophecy and divination. Strong growth in African Christianity takes place mainly in the African Initiated Churches (AICs) which are Pentecostal-charismatic in their outlook. In these Churches the emphasis is on the prophetic ministry of the Church, evident in the performance of divination, healing and in predictions of the future. A good example is the Lumpa Church of Lenshina. Taking this Church as a case study, the article argues that Lenshina’s success and that of her Church are based on the fact that divination, prophecy and a search for gender justice were taken seriously.

Abstract The current moment in history is marked by a sense of anxiety about the future of human rights as a global project. In many instances, human rights pessimism has eclipsed a larger empirical picture of human rights progress. In assessing this paradox of perception, I argue that human rights professionals themselves contribute to this sense of pessimism and crisis in ways that can become counterproductive and demobilizing. Promoting a more positive and balanced human rights vision reflecting both progress and challenges will require several shifts in emphasis over the coming years, beginning with some neglected conversations for the broader field of human rights. These conversations relate to (1) an assessment of the ways in which the prism of professional experience has shaped the messaging and world view of human rights advocates; (2) the role of human rights critics in promoting new thinking and reform; and (3) the need for advocates to go beyond what I call the ‘legalistic referee model’ in their attempts to promote positive change.

The article presents lexical-grammatical and associative-semantic methods of verbalization of basic value-axiological concepts - woman, man, mind, child. The mediacontent of the modern magazine “Zinka” is characterized as a container that covers universal information, including emotional, playful one. The importance of attention to anecdotes is noted as to everyday, literary stories, which reflect key concepts of human relationships, but are not used to create these concepts. The role of mini-texts of jokes as a means of psychological and social unloading, activation of a positive world-view of a person is noted. Anecdotes as oral narrative genres are reproduced in written and bring to the target audience in the artistic form certain value dominants, which contemporary Ukrainians should focus on, as well as gender aspects of linguo-cultural activity in the community, and in general, reflect informative-communication culture of community. All text material is analyzed with attention to the following linguistic means of comism creation: the contrast of direct and figurative meaning of the word and phraseological reversal, the contrast of high and low, literary and colloquial in stylistic semantics of words and phraseological reversals, pun, semantic alogisms of homonyms, synonyms and paronims. Particular attention is paid to the functions of precedent name in literary anecdotes. It is noted that in Ukrainian laughter culture the appellation to a precedent phenomenon is traditional, which serves as the undisputed authority, because for a long time a certain image of a leader has been formed in society, template ideas about it are finished, which gives the impression of the authenticity of the situation being played. It is shown that in such anecdotes and jokes the precedent name acquires interactive features, and the public image of the so-called media persona is updated every time, activating the linguocultural memory of the audience of listeners-readers.

The article investigates the role of communicative competence in the formation of professional qualities of student youth, it identifies important problems of communication of students-future historians and outlines the search for ways to overcome them. The meaning of such concepts as «communication», «communion» and «communicative competence» is clarified. It is proved that communicative competence is an integral quality of the future historian's personality, because it synthesizes the general culture of communication and specific manifestations in professional activity, it requires a clear orientation in the professional situation and choosing the most effective means of communication. The leading activity of a history specialist is conducting scientific discussions, advising political and public figures and speaking in the media. Therefore, he must have literary speech, know language etiquette, rules of use of verbal and nonverbal means of communication, the peculiarities of their use in different situations, to be a speaker who has the techniques of correct, logical, convincing speech, which will further affect his prestige and competitiveness. It is noted that the serious shortcomings of the speech behaviour of most students – future historians are the inability to read, recite and pronounce a coherent textin public, to be engaged in conversation spontaneously and support it. Many future specialists neglect the Ukrainian literary language, preferring the mixed Russian-Ukrainian dialect. They easily switch to Russian in communication, feel insecure in class and seek for the right word in a particular communicative situation for a long time. The psychological aspect of communication plays a significant role. There are cases when young people, having meaningful information, are afraid to express it publicly, feel fear, indecision, when it is necessary to supplement, correct and make adjustments. Qualitative solution of these problems is possible under the condition of orientation of student’s activity on the deep knowledge of the Ukrainian literary language, rhetoric, communicative linguistics, as then the knowledge of a specialist with higher education will be systemic, and through the system it is possible to predict corresponding development of the activity of the future specialist.

Abstract. As the criticism of the definition of the phenotype (i.e., clinical diagnosis) represents the major focus of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative, it is somewhat surprising that discussions have not yet focused more on specific conceptual and procedural considerations of the suggested RDoC constructs, sub-constructs, and associated paradigms. We argue that we need more precise thinking as well as a conceptual and methodological discussion of RDoC domains and constructs, their interrelationships as well as their experimental operationalization and nomenclature. The present work is intended to start such a debate using fear conditioning as an example. Thereby, we aim to provide thought-provoking impulses on the role of fear conditioning in the age of RDoC as well as conceptual and methodological considerations and suggestions to guide RDoC-based fear conditioning research in the future.
