Team Science: A Practical Approach to Starting Collaborative Projects

Abstract A collaborative approach to treating patients is well taught in medical training. However, collaboration and team building in clinical and laboratory research may have been given less emphasis. More scientific discoveries are now being made with multidisciplinary teams, requiring a thoughtful approach in order to achieve research goals while mitigating potential conflicts. Specific steps for a successful team science project include building the team, assigning roles and responsibilities, allocating rules, and discussing authorship guidelines. Building a team involves bringing individuals together and developing a common research goal while establishing psychological safety for all members of the team. Clear assignment of roles and responsibilities avoids confusion and allows each member’s contributions to be acknowledged. Allocating rules involves discussing how decisions in the team will be made, how data and knowledge sharing will occur, and how potential conflicts will be resolved. Discussing authorship at the start of the project ensures that the entire team knows what work must be completed for authorship to be obtained.

American schools make rather wide use of teams. Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), teacher assistance teams, student assistance teams, teaching teams, department teams, grade-level teams, and schoolwide teams are common. Further, teams are thought to be a key catalyst for the implementation of school reform. This article will first review the research on team building in educational settings. Then step-by-step instructions on how to conduct team building will be presented.

In small-group problem-based learning (PBL), students work cooperatively to solve complex, real-world problems. The problems lead the students to learn basic concepts rather than being presented as applications of concepts they have already learned. The goals are for students to learn and be able to apply the disciplinary content, develop critical thinking abilities, and acquire skills of life-long learning, communication, and team building. PBL has been widely used in recent years in medical and related areas of professional education. In those settings each small group typically has its own faculty facilitator. PBL can be successfully adapted for teaching undergraduate and graduate basic science students, in part by having multiple groups meet in one room with a roving facilitator. This report describes a two-semester PBL sequence in organ-systems physiology. To keep the interest of a diverse group of seniors and graduate students, several types of problems were used: clinical, laboratory research-based, real-life scenarios, and published research articles. The majority of students have responded enthusiastically.

Abstract In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the State of Maryland established a 250-bed emergency response field hospital at the Baltimore Convention Center to support the existing healthcare infrastructure. To operationalize this hospital with 65 full-time equivalent (FTE) clinicians in less than four weeks, more than 300 applications were reviewed, 186 candidates were interviewed, and 159 clinicians were credentialed and onboarded. The key steps to achieve this undertaking involved employing multidisciplinary teams with experienced personnel, mass outreach, streamlined candidate tracking, pre-interview screening, utilizing all available expertise, expedited credentialing, and focused onboarding. To ensure staff preparedness, the leadership developed innovative team models, applied principles of effective team building, and provided ‘just in time’ training on COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 related topics to the staff. The leadership focused on staff safety and well-being, offered appropriate financial remuneration and provided leadership opportunities that allowed retention of staff.

The watershed (catchment) approach provides a powerful conceptual model for quantitatively evaluating the structure, function and change within a landscape or region. The values and limitations of this approach are considered in this paper, with particular reference to the Hubbard Brook watershed–ecosystem model. The need for informed long-term (sustained) research is stressed; a haphazard collection of data is rarely valuable. Team-building efforts will be needed increasingly in the future to enhance the success of multidisciplinary teams tackling large and complex environmental problems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential moderating role of team membership change in the relationship between joint decision making and team creativity and to determine whether team psychological safety mediates the moderating effect. Design/methodology/approach Survey data from multiple sources on 78 teams were collected in the People’s Republic of China. Confirmatory factor analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were adopted to analyze the data. Findings The hypothesized mediated moderation model is supported. The results indicate that joint decision making is more positively related to team creativity under lower levels of team membership change and team psychological safety is a significant intermediate mechanism between the moderating effect and team creativity. Research limitations/implications The cross-sectional design of this study is insufficient to support the causal inferences in the theoretical model; therefore, further longitudinal or laboratory research is required. In addition, other possible boundary conditions and underlying mechanisms have yet to be tested. Originality/value The present paper complements the extant studies, which mainly focus on the implication of leadership empowerment behaviors for individual outcomes, by examining the impact of joint decision making on team creativity and, further, reveals when and how joint decision making is more likely to foster team creativity, which extends the literature on leadership and team creativity.

Abstract Background General Practitioners (GPs) often play an important role in caring for people at the end of life. While some international studies suggest that GPs experience a number of barriers to providing palliative care, little is known about views and experiences of GPs in Australia. This study explored Australian GPs’ perceptions of barriers and enablers to the provision of palliative care and provides new insights into how to implement best practice care at the end of life. Methods This was a qualitative study using 25 semi-structured phone interviews conducted with GPs practising in metropolitan and non-metropolitan New South Wales, Australia. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results GPs reported difficulties with palliative care provision due to i) the complex and often emotional nature of doctor-family-interaction; ii) a lack of evidence to guide care; and iii) the need to negotiate roles and responsibilities within the healthcare team. GPs listed a number of strategies to help deal with their workload and to improve communication processes between healthcare providers. These included appropriate scheduling of appointments, locally tailored mentoring and further education, and palliative care guidelines which more clearly outline the roles and responsibilities within multidisciplinary teams. GPs also noted the importance of online platforms to facilitate their communication with patients, their families and other healthcare providers, and to provide centralised access to locally tailored information on palliative care services. GPs suggested that non-government organisations could play an important role by raising awareness of the key role of GPs in palliative care provision and implementing an “official visitor” program, i.e. supporting volunteers to provide peer support or respite to people with palliative care needs and their families. Conclusions This study offers new insights into strategies to overcome well documented barriers to palliative care provision in general practice and help implement optimal care at the end of life. The results suggest that researchers and policy makers should adopt a comprehensive approach to improving the provision of palliative care which tackles the array of barriers and enablers identified in this study.
