ABSTRACT Determination of a magnetic field structure on a neutron star (NS) surface is an important problem of a modern astrophysics. In a presence of strong magnetic fields, a thermal conductivity of a degenerate matter is anisotropic. In this paper, we present 3D anisotropic heat transfer simulations in outer layers of magnetized NSs, and construct synthetic thermal light curves. We have used a different from previous works tensorial thermal conductivity coefficient of electrons, derived from the analytical solution of the Boltzmann equation by the Chapman–Enskog method. We have obtained an NS surface temperature distribution in presence of dipole-plus-quadrupole magnetic fields. We consider a case, in which magnetic axes of a dipole and quadrupole components of the magnetic field are not aligned. To examine observational manifestations of such fields, we have generated thermal light curves for the obtained temperature distributions using a composite blackbody model. It is shown that the simplest (only zero-order spherical function in quadrupole component) non-coaxial dipole-plus-quadrupole magnetic field distribution can significantly affect the thermal light curves, making pulse profiles non-symmetric and amplifying pulsations in comparison to the pure-dipolar field.

AbstractThe present investigation deals with the steady three-dimensional flow and heat transfer of nanofluids due to stretching sheet in the presence of magnetic field and heat source. Three types of water based nanoparticles namely, copper (Cu), aluminium oxide (Al2O3), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) are considered in this study. The temperature dependent variable thermal conductivity and thermal radiation has been introduced in the energy equation. Using suitable similarity transformations the dimensional non-linear expressions are converted into dimensionless system and are then solved numerically by Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg scheme along with well-known shooting technique. The impact of various flow parameters on axial and transverse velocities, temperature, surface frictional coefficients and rate of heat transfer coefficients are visualized both in qualitative and quantitative manners in the vicinity of stretching sheet. The results reviled that the temperature and velocity of the fluid rise with increasing values of variable thermal conductivity parameter. Also, the temperature and normal velocity of the fluid in case of Cu-water nanoparticles is more than that of Al2O3- water nanofluid. On the other hand, the axial velocity of the fluid in case of Al2O3- water nanofluid is more than that of TiO2nanoparticles. In addition, the current outcomes are matched with the previously published consequences and initiate to be a good contract as a limiting sense.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the convective heat transfer of magnetic nanofluid (MNF) inside a square enclosure under uniform magnetic fields considering nonlinearity of magnetic field-dependent thermal conductivity. Design/methodology/approach The properties of the MNF (Fe3O4+kerosene) were described by polynomial functions of magnetic field-dependent thermal conductivity. The effect of the transverse magnetic field (0 < H < 105), Hartmann Number (0 < Ha < 60), Rayleigh number (10 <Ra <105) and the solid volume fraction (0 < φ < 4.7%) on the heat transfer performance inside the enclosed space was examined. Continuity, momentum and energy equations were solved using the finite element method. Findings The results show that the Nusselt number increases when the Rayleigh number increases. In contrast, the convective heat transfer rate decreases when the Hartmann number increases due to the strong magnetic field which suppresses the buoyancy force. Also, a significant improvement in the heat transfer rate is observed when the magnetic field is applied and φ = 4.7% (I = 11.90%, I = 16.73%, I = 10.07% and I = 12.70%). Research limitations/implications The present numerical study was carried out for a steady, laminar and two-dimensional flow inside the square enclosure. Also, properties of the MNF are assumed to be constant (except thermal conductivity) under magnetic field. Practical implications The results can be used in thermal storage and cooling of electronic devices such as lithium-ion batteries during charging and discharging processes. Originality/value The accuracy of results and heat transfer enhancement having magnetic field-field-dependent thermal conductivity are noticeable. The results can be used for different applications to improve the heat transfer rate and enhance the efficiency of a system.

AbstractA superconductor of paired protons is thought to form in the core of neutron stars soon after their birth. Minimum energy conditions suggest that magnetic flux is expelled from the superconducting region due to the Meissner effect, such that the neutron star core retains or is largely devoid of magnetic fields for some nuclear equation of state and proton pairing models. We show via neutron star cooling simulations that the superconducting region expands faster than flux is expected to be expelled because cooling timescales are much shorter than timescales of magnetic field diffusion. Thus magnetic fields remain in the bulk of the neutron star core for at least 106 − 107yr. We estimate the size of flux free regions at 107yr to be ≲ 100m for a magnetic field of 1011G and possibly smaller for stronger field strengths.

In this paper, three-dimensional numerical simulation was taken on a Linear Fresnel solar receiver tube using molten salt as heat transfer fluid (HTF), in which the porous media was filled to enhance the heat transfer efficiency. The simulation was to analyze the influence of the different conditions (filling rate, porosity and thermal conductivity) on heat transfer effect and wall temperature difference. The results revealed that the Nu (Nusselt number) increased firstly and then decreased with the increasing filling rate in both center filling and annular filling types. The optimal thermal performance were obtained when filling rate were 0.8 and 0.2 in center filling and annular filling, respectively. The Nu were about 1.7 and 1.5 times as the clear receiver. The circumferential temperature difference decreased firstly and then increased with filling rate increasing in both center filling and annular filling types. The lowest circumferential temperature differences were achieved at the filling rate 0.8 and 0.4 in center filling and annular filling types, and temperature difference decreased 15.88°C and 22°C compared with clear receiver, respectively. The Nu and PEC both decreased with porosity increasing. However, the thermal conductivity of porous media had little influence to the Nu and circumferential wall temperature.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the effect of two-dimensional Darcy-Forchheimer flow over second-grade fluid with linear stretching. Heat transfer through convective boundary conditions is taken into account. Design/methodology/approach Nonlinear coupled governing equations are tackled with a homotopy algorithm, while for numerical computation the computer software package BVPh 2.0 is used. The convergence analysis is also presented for the validation of analytical and numerical results. Findings Valuation for the impact of key parameters such as variable thermal conductivity, Dufour and Soret effects and variable magnetic field in an electrically conducted fluid on the velocity, concentration and temperature profiles are graphically illustrated. It is observed from the results that temperature distribution rises by Dufour number whereas concentration distribution rises by Soret number. The Forchheimer number and porosity parameter raise the skin friction coefficient. The permeable medium has a vital impact and can help in reining the rate of heat transfer. Practical implications The permeable medium has a vital impact and can help in reining the rate of heat transfer. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is reported for the first time.

Thermodynamic picture induced by π-d interaction in a molecular magnetic superconductor κ-(BETS)2FeX4 (X = Cl, Br), where BETS is bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene, studied by single crystal calorimetry is reviewed. Although the S = 5/2 spins of Fe3+ in the anion layers form a three-dimensional long-range ordering with nearly full entropy of Rln6, a broad hump structure appears in the temperature dependence of the magnetic heat capacity only when the magnetic field is applied parallel to the a axis, which is considered as the magnetic easy axis. The scaling of the temperature dependence of the magnetic heat capacity of the two salts is possible using the parameter of |Jdd|/kB and therefore the origin of the hump structure is related to the direct magnetic interaction, Jdd, that is dominant in the system. Quite unusual crossover from a three-dimensional ordering to a one-dimensional magnet occurs when magnetic fields are applied parallel to the a axis. A notable anisotropic field-direction dependence against the in-plane magnetic field was also observed in the transition temperature of the bulk superconductivity by the angle-resolved heat capacity measurements. We discuss the origin of this in-plane anisotropy in terms of the 3d electron spin configuration change induced by magnetic fields.

A microscope to image weak magnetic fields using a low-temperature superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) had developed with a liquid helium consumption rate of ~0.5L/hour. The gradient pickup coil is made by a low-temperature superconducting niobium wire with a diameter of 66 μm, which is coupled to the input circuit of the SQUID and is then enwound on the sapphire bobbin. Both of the pickup coil and the SQUID sensor are installed in a red copper cold finger, which is thermally anchored to the liquid helium evaporation platform in the vacuum space of the cryostat. To reduce the distance between the pickup coil and sample, a 100 μm thick sapphire window is nestled up to the bottom of the cryostat. A three-dimensional scanning stage platform with a 50 cm Teflon sample rack under the sapphire window had the precision of 10 μm. To test the fidelity of the new facility, the distribution of the magnetic field of basalt slice specimens was determined. Results show that the spatial resolution of the newly-designed facility is 500 μm with a gradient magnetic field sensitivity of 380fT. This opens new opportunities in examining the distribution of magnetic assemblages in samples, which bear great geological and geophysical information.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to numerically solve the problem of an unsteady squeezing three-dimensional flow and heat transfer of a nanofluid in rotating vertical channel of stretching left plane. The fluid is assumed to be Newtonian, incompressible and electrically conducting embedded with nanoparticles. Effect of internal heat generation/ absorption is also considered in energy equation. Four different types of nanoparticles are considered, namely, copper (Cu), alumina (Al2O3), silver (Ag) and titanium oxide (TiO2) with the base fluid as water. Maxwell-Garnetts and Brinkman models are, respectively, employed to calculate the effective thermal conductivity and viscosity of the nanofluid. Design/methodology/approach – Using suitable similarity transformations, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into set of ordinary differential equations. Resultant equations have been solved numerically using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth fifth order method for different values of the governing parameters. Effects of pertinent parameters on normal, axial and tangential components of velocity and temperature distributions are presented through graphs and discussed in detail. Further, effects of nanoparticle volume fraction, squeezing parameter, suction/injection parameter and heat source/sink parameter on skin friction and local Nusselt number profiles for different nanoparticles are presented in tables and analyzed. Findings – Squeezing effect enhances the temperature field and consequently reduces the heat transfer rate. Large values of mixed convection parameter showed a significant effect on velocity components. Also, in many heat transfer applications, nanofluids are potentially useful because of their novel properties. They exhibit high-thermal conductivity compared to the base fluids. Further, squeezing and rotation effects are desirable in control the heat transfer. Originality/value – Three-dimensional mixed convection flows over in rotating vertical channel filled with nanofluid are very rare in the literature. Mixed convection squeezing three-dimensional flow in a rotating channel filled with nanofluid is first time investigated.
