This chapter details many ways of collecting information about student performance. Diagnostic assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment all work together to inform teaching and learning throughout a lesson or unit. Summative assessment is what comes to mind when many people think of “assessment,” but summative assessment is the assessment type that supports learning the least. Assessment for learning, as opposed to assessment of learning, is the type of classroom assessment that helps students know where they are going, where they are now, and how to get there. Assessment design can improve validity. A nearly infinite variety of possible assessment methods, or ways to gather information, exists. The most common methods in schools can be categorized as selected response, written response, verbal response, performance or demonstration, personal communication, portfolios, quick formative assessment techniques, and self and peer assessment. Using a variety of methods helps to ensure curricular comprehensiveness.

It is debatable whether it is appropriate to assess performance in the arts. However, formal education institutions and the systems within which they operate continue to require summative assessment to take place in order to award qualifications. This chapter considers the extent to which such summative assessment systems in music determine not only what is taught but also what learners learn. The evidence suggests that any learning outcome in formal education that is not assessed is unlikely to be given priority by either learners or teachers. To optimize learning, the aims and the processes of learning, including formative, self-, and peer assessment procedures, should be aligned with summative assessment. Research addressing the roles, methods, and value of formative, self-, and peer assessment in enhancing learning is considered. A proposal is made that the most appropriate way of enhancing learning is to ensure that summative assessment procedures are authentic and have real-life relevance supporting the teaching and learning process, to ensure that learners are motivated and see the relevance of what they are learning. This might take many forms depending on musical genre, communities of practice, and the wider cultural environment.

Welcome to the final edition of the Journal of University Learning and Teaching Practice for 2017. We would like to acknowledge the significant contributions of our five Associate Editors - Dr Peter Copeman, University of Canberra, Dr Jo-Anne Kelder, University of Tasmania, Dr Tracey Kuit, University of Wollongong, Dr Morag McFadyen, Robert Gordon University, and Dr Vikki Pollard, Deakin University. The first two papers in this issue focus explicitly on assessment activities. In the first paper, Houston and Thompson describe and evaluate an assessment design that aimed to integrate formative assessment with summative assessment in a capstone paramedic subject. The assessment design provided students with feedback tailored to their unique learning needs. Students perceived this assessment as valuable and effective as well as promoting their readiness to practice. In the second paper Braun compares online and in class presentation assessments exploring student perceptions and academic performance with regard to these two assessment modes. This comparison identified that there was no significant difference between the two modes and there is a suggestion that online presentations might even be favoured by students.

Current interdisciplinary medical training calls for reforms and innovations in the assessment of pathophysiology education. Formative assessment is used to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can improve both learning and teaching. Beginning in 2016, we implemented a formative assessment composed of case-based multiple-choice questions (MCQs) for all students in all majors. In 2017, case study questions began to be employed in the formative assessment, and student-set, case-based questions were further introduced. Aiming to gather the students’ suggestions and feedback on the mixed-method assessment, we conducted a survey on aspects such as the effectiveness of the assessment, assessment content and completion, opinions on student-set questions, and the impact on pathophysiology learning for students from 2017 to 2019. In addition, we compared students’ semesterly final scores with those of previous students and evaluated the relationship between formative and summative assessment scores. The results for 1,277 students clearly showed that the reformed formative assessment system was well received by the students. The students thought that the formative assessment not only allowed for the provision of real-time feedback on the effectiveness of teaching and learning but also nurtured self-motivation, the development of analytical and problem-solving skills, and collaborative efforts. Both the semesterly final scores and the proportions of students scoring in higher score ranges increased after the implementation of the formative assessment, and the summative assessment scores were positively related to the formative assessment scores. Consequently, the reformed formative assessment system significantly improved the quality of pathophysiology education.

Student performance assessments play an important role in the training process. They reflect how well students performed their learning activities. The goals of assessment are multiple according to their functions. Among assessment forms currently applied at higher education institutions, the formative assessment shows its strength over others by offering great contributions to the innovation of teaching and learning activities. Appropriate use of this form of assessment leads to a successful teaching and learning process, and a much better result and quality of training. This paper focuses on the view of formative assessment management from teachers’ lenses in order to help adjust teaching/learning methods and curriculums. To learn more about the reality of formative assessment for English majors and how it is managed by various stakeholders, a questionnaire and interviews were used. The investigation's findings reveal a substantial lack of teacher knowledge of the nature and strengths of formative assessment. These findings also point to new ways to increase student motivation through the use of formative assessment.

Psychomotor assessment can be carried out in every learning activity, one of them is in the science practicum activities. The implementation of science practicum for students of Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program also demands aspects of skills in carrying out practical activities. The large number of students in one class causes educators to only be able to assess the ability of student performance in groups. One strategy that can help educators in assessing student performance in science practicum activities is through peer assessment techniques. The research design used here is a research development with a 4-D model, namely Define, Design, Development and Disseminate. Based on the results of the needs analysis carried out at the define stage, it was obtained that psychomotor evaluation instruments are needed in the implementation of practical science activities. In the design phase, an initial draft of the instrument sheet will be carried out in accordance with the stages contained in the science practicum activities. At the development stage, an instrument sheet development phase will be carried out through expert validation activities and limited field trials. Disseminate stage which is the last stage, which is carried out dissemination of products on a larger sample. The results of the responses obtained from students showed that all students involved found it easier to carry out the assessment process with peer assessment techniques. They can use the time well in the assessment process so that the science practicum activities can run optimally. Every student who acts as a practitioner also seems eager to do practical activities because they know that they are being assessed directly, so that the assessment process becomes more objective.

The Formative Assessment in Science project was funded by HEFCE as part of the Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning Programme. Its work was completed in March 2006. The project was centred on a strong collaboration between the Open University and Sheffield Hallam University, but also involved ~20 other universities in action learning activities aimed at improving formative assessment. The project partners used a conceptually and empirically based framework of conditions which, if met, lead to assessment that drives learning. The projects were diverse and the many positive assessment changes achieved demonstrate that the approach of a framework based analysis and careful evaluation can be successful in improving the student experience. I will summarise some of the main conclusions of the project. One concerns the creation of written feedback that promotes learning rather than merely justifying marks. A second covers the effective use of peer assessment. Finally, I will outline the tools that the project has generated. These will remain available for others to undertake similar reform activities.

The aim of this research was to find out the assessment literacy level of chemistry teachers in Turkey. For the purpose of the research, different types of formative assessment techniques were included in the research. This research was conducted as a case study, which is a kind of qualitative research design. The participants in the research were 12 chemistry teachers working in different high schools in Şanlıurfa, one of the largest cities in south-eastern Turkey in 2017-2018 spring term. Research data were collected with a semi-structured interview form. Content analysis was performed on the research data. According to the results, chemistry teachers did not have sufficient perception and knowledge about diagnostic and formative assessment. Chemistry teachers’ perception related to objective of formative assessment techniques was very low and it was almost unfamiliar to them. Also, chemistry teachers had little perception about how formative assessment techniques should be prepared and what is their function. Their perception related to the interpretation/scoring of the results obtained from formative assessment techniques was almost non-existent. They had serious deficiencies related to formative assessment techniques and they focused on summative assessment rather than formative assessment and related techniques in their chemistry classes. Keywords: assessment literacy (AL), chemistry teachers (CTs), formative assessment techniques (FATs), Turkey.

Formative assessment plays a crucial role in improving the quality of teaching and learning process. However, this activity has superficially concerned in Vietnam whilst summative assessment (specifically the summative tests) has experienced a long dominant period for assessing student’s academic achievement. This paper highlights the outstanding issues of formative assessment practice in real context teaching. In addition, we present some implementation measures to use summative tests for improving teaching and learning quality in high school. Proposed examples in this article are illustrated in Biology teaching.

Assessment is an extensive topic that encompasses a wide variety of definitions within the field of education, and evaluating the effectiveness of many types of assessment is often an arduous task. Master, G. 2015 stated, “The fundamental purpose of assessment in education is to establish and understand the points that students (either as individuals or groups) have reached in their learning at the time of assessment’. Assessment is the process of gathering data. More specifically, assessment is the way instructors gather data about their teaching and their students’ learning (Hanna, G and Dettmer, P, 2004).There are many different forms of assessment, each with their own specific purpose. Determining what kind of assessment is most effective is highly dependent on the purpose of the data a teacher is trying to collect. Since assessment is often used in making major decisions, there is a great deal of discussion regarding strategies that could improve student performance. Trends in formative assessment and using data to positively impact student learning has become an integral part of a teacher’s everyday and ongoing practice. This article addresses formative instructional practice and the many strategies, techniques and tools available to both teachers and students. These tools and apps give teachers and students many options and opportunities for classroom success. KEYWORDS: Formative assessment, summative assessment, assessment of learning, formative assessment apps.
