Given the fundamental importance of baths to daily life in ancient Rome, this chapter introduces the book and concentrates attention on the best preserved of Rome’s imperial thermae, the Baths of Caracalla, in order to unveil the cultural and sociopolitical forces that shaped monumental public spaces and their visual experience. By outlining the Baths’ architectural design and evocative decoration, this chapter foreshadows new insights into the multiple meanings underlying their embellishment and, therefore, the myriad ways in which imperial patronage can be understood. The chapter sets the stage by examining the importance of baths and bathing in ancient Rome generally before delving into the patronage of Rome’s imperial thermae and the Baths of Caracalla more specifically. Special attention is given to tracing the Baths of Caracalla’s ancient design and more modern history of excavation, as well as situating the author’s arguments and aims within recent scholarly contributions.

Mültecilerin Filistin’den ayrılırken yanlarına aldıkları anahtar, tapu ve toprak gibi nesnelerin saklanıyor olması, Filistin’e olan bağlılığın devam ettiğinin işaretlerinden biridir.ABSTRACT IN ENGLISHPalestinian refugees’ lives in MersinIn the history of Palestine, 1948 and 1967 wars have caused fleeing of thousands of Palestinians to other countries. The first stake consists in the well-known episode of translation of the XI-XII centuries in the Latin milieu of the Greek and Arabic treaties. The treatise De sphaera taking over, assimilating and comparing some of the new translations of the texts dedicated to astronomy. The second Consists in the fact that Sacrobosco`s work can be considered a response to a need of renewal of the curriculum dedicated to astronomy at the University of Paris. And the third consists in the novelty and the need to use the De sphaera treatise in the Parisian University’s curriculum of the 13th century. This article offers an analysis of the identity work of a black transgender woman through life history research. Identity work pertains to the ongoing effort of authoring oneself and positions the individual as the agent; not a passive recipient of identity scripts. The findings draw from three life history interviews. Using thematic analysis, the following themes emerge: institutionalisation of gender norms; gender and sexuality unintelligibility; transitioning and passing; and lastly, gender expression and public spaces. The discussion follows from a poststructuralist conception of identity, which frames identity as fluid and as being continually established. The study contends that identity work is a complex and fragmented process, which is shaped by other social identities. To that end, the study also acknowledges the role of collective agency in shaping gender identity.
