The Overproduction of Truth

The way science is done has changed radically in the last years. The personal reflections and experiences of a protagonist help us to understand the mechanisms of contemporary science. A system where passion, dedication and reliability, have increasingly less room, pressed by hard market laws. From vocation of a few, science has become the profession of many, possibly too many. With consequences and risks, such as the increase of frauds, plagiarism, but in particular with a huge amount of scientific publications, often of little relevance. The solution? A slow approach with more emphasis to quality than quantity, that helps us to rediscover the central role of a responsible scientist. The work is a critical review and assessment of present-day policies and behaviors in science production and publication, touching upon the tumultuous growth of scientific Journals, in parallel to the growth of self-declared scientists over the world. Along with personal reminiscences of times past, the author investigates the loopholes and hoaxes of pretended Journals and non-existing Congresses, so common nowadays in the scientific arena. The troubles with bibliometric indices are also discussed, as resulting in large part from the above distortions of science life.

This chapter explores how validation of new results works in science. It also looks at the peer-review process, both pros and cons, as well as scientific communication, scientific journals, and scientific publishers. We give an assessment of the total number of existing journals with peer review. Other topics discussed include the phenomenon of open access, predatory journals and their impact on contemporary science, and the market of scientific publications. Finally, we touch on degenerative phenomena, such as the market of co-authors, bogus papers, and irrelevant and wrong studies, as well as the problem and the social cost of irreproducible results.

Purpose. The presentation of challenges with which scientific journals and - more broadly - scientific communication, will have to face in the substantive, technological and financial sphere in the conditions of constant evolution of the digital world, dynamic development of new information systems in science (e-library, library 2.0) and new phenomena conditioning the behaviour of Internet users. Method. The views presented in the article are the result of a review of literature regarding scientific journals and empirical research, which was conducted from April to August 2018 among 132 authors representing the world of science and economic practices. Findings. The open access (OA) movement has caused significant changes in the behaviour of people of science in publishing and depositing research results. The prospect of taking over all the functions of scientific journals by scientific repositories still seems to be distant due to the lack of alternative methods for assessing the quality of scientific publications. There are doubts about the division into scientific, institutional repositories and the repositories belonging to scientific journals, which results from unclear business models of individual solutions. The phenomenon of self-publishing is stimulated by the dynamic development of research carried out by business units, skilfully analysing the resources of large data sets and successfully popularising research results in social repositories. This is new quality in the area of information exchange, which requires rapid adaptation on scientific grounds. An insufficiently implemented postulate to popularise scientific knowledge and its transfer to business practice remains an equally important challenge. Research and conclusions limitations. The results of the survey based on the respondents’ subjective assessment should be treated with caution and do not allow to draw general conclusions. The research revealed significant discrepancies in respondents' opinions regarding the future of scientific journals and their prospects for functioning in new information systems. The highest doubts concern the quality assessment system of scientific publications and the business model of scientific repositories: the significant number of stakeholders of the scientific communication system, dispersed in various scientific, political and economic systems, further limits the possibility of formulating unambiguous decisions in this respect. Originality. The presented article formulates challenges for scientific journals whose functions are being increasingly taken over by scientific and social repositories. In contrast to the previously published works, this suggests solutions in the field of artificial intelligence, which will enable complete change in the way of publishing and validation of knowledge as well as quality control of scientific research. Type of work. Review article.

The new technologies of today's world, applied in the perceptive and creative processes, bring the need to rediscover the role of representations in both, academic and professional, areas of architecture. Therefore, this article seeks to understand and demystify Oscar Niemeyer’s (1907-2012) design process, one of the most renowned Latin American architects in the world and known for his peculiar design process - distinguished by consisting only of sketches and texts, but, as this research reveals, also by physical models - and his broad professional activity, which accompanied the variations occurred in architectural production in Brazil and in the world, between the years 1940 and 2010

In order to prevent rising danger caused by climate changes, in recent decades an agreement on the level of United Nations was established, to reduce gradually the consumption of fossil fuels until its total termination. This agreement (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)) until 2018 was signed by a majority of countries in the world. One of the requirements was the transition to electrically powered automobiles, which in developed countries started roughly in 2010. The competition between fuel cells and batteries as driving tools became actual then, but in the key moment batteries mainfested themselves to be technologically superior. Already in 2018 the number of battery driven electric cars produced in leading developed countries was expressed in millions. Following this new and significant role of batteries, the aim of this contribution is a) a short presentation of the principle of energy conversion in batteries and their energetic characteristics, b) the survey of the requirements to the reactants in chemical reaction of a battery, from which the troubles in their development may be derived, depending on the materials technology, c) the competitiveness of batteries to the fossil fuels in an energetic sense, and, d) the forecast what one may expect in near future from the competitive power of batteries within the scope of development of new materials.

Basically, the change of the curriculum is to adapt to the progress of the times. Changes from the previous curriculum to the 2013 curriculum caused many groups, especially teachers to be less prepared to accept these changes. A challenge for teachers to be able to adapt to the times that are adapted to the 2013 curriculum. The research objective is to analyze the role of teachers in the 2013 curriculum in the globalization era. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The source of research data used is the result of direct observation by researchers as observers of the world of education at the school level. In addition to sources of observation, researchers use reference sources in the form of scientific journals and books that are relevant to the research being studied. The results of the study were: 1) The role of teacher leadership, namely a teacher in the world of education, how to be a good leader and responsible for the progress of students in school. Teacher leadership as a facilitator must be implemented to students in accordance with the needs of students in learning, 2) Analysis of the Role of Teachers on the 2013 Curriculum in the Globalization Era, namely teachers in this era of globalization must be able to bring themselves so as not to lag behind the times. The 2013 curriculum that has been implemented in schools must be used by teachers to improve themselves with various activities that support student education in schools. As a facilitator, the teacher must be able to set a good example for students. In addition, teachers must be able to use the technology used in education.
