Ethical Leadership in India

The chapter offers a review of research and theory on ethical leadership in India, attempting a confluence between leadership theories developed in the West and the traditional Indian wisdom. Gunas, as described in the Bhagavad Gita, present an account of ethical/moral traits of a leader. Given the debate over the assumed ethicality of transformational leadership, wherein a leader could exercise influence for personal benefits as well, this approach provides a very limited view of ethical leadership. The idea of Karma and its distinct focus on duty and detachment from rewards provides a basis for ethical leadership. Gunas and the key tenets of Karma are used to identify a two-dimensional conceptualization of ethical leadership, where the former focusses on ethical person (aspect of leadership) and the latter on the ethical manager (given its interpersonal orientation). This approach to leadership brings ethical concerns to the centre stage in managing work behaviour.

This essay lays out a history of the translation, interpretation, transmission and reception of the Bhagavad Gita as a cultural, religious and philosophical text in the West from 1785 to 1945; in doing so it focuses primarily on Britain, although it also refers to other contexts of reception where they are connected to the British context, or to present revealing or helpful comparisons. The object of the essay is to investigate relationships between the Gita's interpretive history and assumptions about the Gita, both as a transcultural philosophical source and as an essentially Hindu religious text, which have been in place since the twentieth century. Although there have been other transnational surveys and histories of the Gita's translation, this essay differs from them in positing a specific period of interpretation between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, during which time, it argues, the Gita as a received and translated text was significantly altered in certain specific ways which continue to influence its present understanding both in the West and in India.

Our academia is familiar with the educational theories and thoughts developed in the West. However, we have no adequate information about our own historical and cultural thoughts in relation to education, despite their importance and comprehensiveness. In the Bhagavad Gita, I noticed that some of the basic components of educational philosophy are present. Among the various aspects of educational thoughts, this paper deals with the interpretation of the meaning of education that can be found in the Bhagavad Gita. Interpretation of a comprehensive meaning of education consisted within the Bhagavad Gita can contribute to inspire academicians to look behind the curtain of history for searching valuable knowledge. It can also provide some bases for comparative study of educational philosophy in the East and the West. During the past one decade we have witnessed an increase in number of literatures on ancient wisdom in leadership. Among the Indian (Asian) literatures, the Bhagavad-Gita is often cited by many scholars. Therefore, in this chapter, the authors attempt to draw a parallel between the transformational leadership and the Bhagavad-Gita. The significance of transformational leadership has received great attention and good amount of study has been done in this area. For this chapter, the authors have employed hermeneutics, which is a methodology used for the interpretation of ancient literatures. The Bhagavad-Gita advocates a consciousness and a spirit-centered approach to transformational leadership based on eternal values and moral principles. This chapter is likely to provide insights into Indian (Asian) leadership (and management) strategies for Western business leaders, enabling them to work more effectively with Indian business leaders in India, and in regions where there are significant Indian population.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to offer a review of the selected literature in ethical leadership synthesizing findings from 45 articles selected from journals on leadership, public administration, organizational behavior, psychology and ethics. Design/methodology/approach Four themes are addressed: the conceptualization of ethical leadership theories, the existence of popular measurement instruments for ethical leadership, findings on ethical leadership in the public sector and outcomes of ethical leadership in terms of benefits and negative consequences. Findings The definition by Brown et al. (2005) is the most frequently used definition, even though recent criticism states that this definition may be too narrow. Ethical leadership is usually measured by means of a survey; however, there are at least three different questionnaires in use. In the public sector, ethical leadership has been linked to both positive outcomes and negative consequences. Research limitations/implications This paper only includes selected academic articles and does not include published books. Originality/value Based on our findings, the authors present recommendations for future research, among others into a broader conceptualization of ethical leadership and the use of mixed methods.
