From the first multiuser dungeons and rudimentary chatrooms to the vast lands of online gaming and incredibly popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, the Internet continues to provide many ways to connect socially. This chapter provides a historical context to the discussion of the social aspects of technology use and their various functionalities to provide users with a sense of social connectedness or embeddedness. The aim of this discussion is to highlight the idiosyncrasies of the different social networking services available today in terms of their ability to connect or disconnect individuals. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of future considerations for research in this area in terms of how to better understand the impact and utility of social technology in everyday life.

With the increased use of Social Networking Sites and Apps (SNSAs) in Saudi Arabia, it is important to consider the impact of this on the social lives of tertiary students, who are heavy users of such technology. A mixed methods study exploring the effect of SNSAs use on the social capital of Saudi postgraduate students was conducted using a multidimensional construct of social capital, which included the components of life satisfaction, social trust, civic participation, and political engagement. Data were collected through surveys and interviews involving 313 male and 293 female postgraduate students from Umm Al-Qura University (UQU) in Makkah. Findings show that male and female participants perceived SNSAs use impacting all components of social capital at a moderate and mainly positive level. Correlational analysis demonstrated medium to large positive correlations among components of social capital. Gender differences were not evident in the life satisfaction and social trust components; however, females reported more involvement with SNSAs for the purposes of political engagement while males reported more use for civic participation, which is an interesting finding, in light of the norms and traditional culture of Saudi society.

Purpose The study aims to demonstrate the impact of social media users’ positive attitude towards the social networking sites (SNS) on the generation of a positive attitude towards social networking advertisements (SNA). A favourable attitude towards the SNA thus generated can positively influence brand attitude and purchase intention. Design/methodology/approach An online survey was conducted to collect relevant data using a structured questionnaire. Structural equation modelling was conducted using the statistical software AMOS 18. Findings Empirical analysis revealed the importance of brand advertisements on the social networks in inciting a positive attitude as well as a purchase intention for the brand in the SNS users’ minds. Research limitations/implications The study has been conducted in the Indian context using Facebook as a model social networking site. Practical implications Social media being one of the most popular and user-friendly platforms for regular communications, marketers are suggested to allocate a sizeable share of the advertising budget for social media advertisements and customer engagement so as to help build a positive attitude towards the advertised brand in the SNS users’ minds. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the impact of users’ positive evaluation of SNS as an effective communication medium, on the generation of a positive attitude towards the SNA, has been dealt for the first time here.

As the social technology matured in recent years, so did the threat landscape of the online medium. Fears about breaches of privacy and personal information security seem to dominate the list of concerns of social media users described in literature. Popular press continually reports cases of inadvertent and malicious information disclosure and breaches, cyberbullying, and stalking. Yet, social networking sites proliferated into all areas of human activity. The factor causing this phenomenon lies in the trusted nature of networks and the sense of trustworthiness of this easy-to-use technology. The formation of trust into social technology has attracted much attention, and this chapter offers an overview of the trust predictors in social settings. It continues with a retrospective into the threat landscape and the use of personalisation by social networking services to counter some of these threats. Further research directions are discussed.

The aim of this research is to determine the extent of the impact resulting from electronic social networking sites with their various indicators on the lives of members of the Palestinian society in all aspects of living. The researcher has used the descriptive analytical method and the questionnaire tool in collecting field data, as the research community was a resident of the Palestinian city of Bethlehem located south The West Bank from all aspects of life and living for them, and the sample taken from the research community reached (888) individuals, with a percentage (3%) of the entire research community, and this research has reached a set of important results on this topic, one of the most important being that most users The reality of social media are from the young category, and that the most used website is Facebook compared to jealousy, as it turns out that the most affected aspects of life from electronic social networking sites are the social aspect, whose impact ratio has reached a value (1.90%) followed by the religious side, which came The percentage of being affected by social media has reached a value of (3.87%), then came the educational aspect, which has reached an impact rate of (4. 83%), then the behavioral aspect came with an impact rate of (3. 81%) then, culturally, at a value of (78%), as for the psychological aspect, which reached a value of 2.63%), another and the lowest of these values ​​came to the economic aspect, which reached a value (9.58%), thus forming the least effects resulting from the existence and use of sites. Electronic social networking within the Palestinian society. As for the nature of the relationship between social media and the aspects of life for members of Palestinian society, a strong and statistically significant relationship has emerged, and the nature of this relationship came in a direct way between each of the subscription period, the number of hours of daily use, the number of added friends, the goal of the subscription, and the number of sites The electronic system used and between the various aspects related to the life of the members of the Palestinian society represented in the social, religious, educational, behavioral, cultural, psychological and economic fields. At the end of the research, the researcher made a number of recommendations at the public and private levels that came from the most important of them. The time for awareness-raising by educational institutions represented in schools and universities to warn against the increase in the use of such sites and warn of the negative consequences resulting from them, and to identify the main issues in which the use of electronic social networking sites that are beneficial to the user are required, especially in social, behavioral, and other aspects.

The study seeks to study the chaos of information on social networks, their impact on the credibility of these networks, the identification of forms of information chaos in the social networks, the degree of public confidence in the information they deal with, their sense of information chaos, Through social networking sites. The study was conducted on (378) individual subscribers of different social networks, "Facebook and LinkedIn and Twitter."  Results: One of the most important findings of the study is that more than half of the sample of the study feel the chaos of information on social networks, due to the large number of accounts on the networks and the increase of anonymous information, as well as the lack of control over the information published on those networks. There are also many forms of information chaos on social networks: anonymous information, privacy violations, infringement of intellectual property rights and rights of publishers, the proliferation of counterfeit and contradictory information, the manufacture and dissemination of viruses, breaches and disruption of devices, and multiple personal or institutional accounts. The researcher recommends the need to pay attention to the enactment of media legislation and laws related to the new media environment for social networking sites to reduce the chaos of information and privacy protection, and to raise awareness of the importance of social networking sites and the Publishing Standards through courses and workshops to reduce the chaos.

Social sites networking (SNS) have grow from being merely libertine stages for personl  use to awesome progressive structure that utilized both blend and inside and remotely for relationship and joined exertion with shafts separated stakeholders. Generally among youthful understudies, Social sites networks is an unmistakable example today In this paper by using student-por.csv and student-mat.csv dataset, we work on the classifier on  the social media impact on students academic performances. For this purposes we choose K nearest-neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM) and Linear regression algorithm using python that predict slightly better and give right prediction about the student’s academic performance.  In social networking model our work has enhanced our imminent.  The results reveal that there is strong relationship between social media and student’s academic performance. This paper shows that mostly students have cell phones and also have internet availability so they use 40 mints form 4 hours daily and not give attentions to their studies, all these activities on internet effect the student’s academic performance. This study will commence with introduction and background of existing studies. After that on the basis of background there will be a research question.

BACKGROUND Alcohol is often consumed in social contexts. An emerging social context in which alcohol is becoming increasingly apparent is social media. More and more young people display alcohol-related posts on social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram. OBJECTIVE Considering the importance of the social aspects of alcohol consumption and social media use, this study investigated the social content of alcohol posts (ie, the evaluative social context and presence of people) and social processes (ie, the posting of and reactions to posts) involved with alcohol posts on social networking sites. METHODS Participants (N=192; mean age 20.64, SD 4.68 years, 132 women and 54 men) gave researchers access to their Facebook and/or Instagram profiles, and an extensive content analysis of these profiles was conducted. Coders were trained and then coded all screenshotted timelines in terms of evaluative social context, presence of people, and reactions to post. RESULTS Alcohol posts of youth frequently depict alcohol in a positive social context (425/438, 97.0%) and display people holding drinks (277/412, 67.2%). In addition, alcohol posts were more often placed on participants’ timelines by others (tagging; 238/439, 54.2%) than posted by participants themselves (201/439, 45.8%). Furthermore, it was revealed that such social posts received more likes (mean 35.50, SD 26.39) and comments than nonsocial posts (no people visible; mean 10.34, SD 13.19, P<.001). CONCLUSIONS In terms of content and processes, alcohol posts on social media are social in nature and a part of young people’s everyday social lives. Interventions aiming to decrease alcohol posts should therefore focus on the broad social context of individuals in which posting about alcohol takes place. Potential intervention strategies could involve making young people aware that when they post about social gatherings in which alcohol is visible and tag others, it may have unintended negative consequences and should be avoided.

Due to the outstanding growth of geotagging technology usage among the social networking sites (SNSs) users, research is needed to better understand how SNSs users accept and use this technology. This study explores the factors that affect the adoption of geotagging technology among the SNSs users integrating personal innovativeness in IT (PIIT) with UTAUT. By using structured questionnaire survey, 390 data were collected. Statistical analysis techniques, such as SPSS AMOS and partial least square method, based on structural equation modelling (SEM), were used to analyse the collected data. Integrated UTAUT fulfills all criterion of model fitness. Interestingly, PIIT properly explains the personal characteristics of SNSs users in UTAUT framework. PIIT has impact on all UTAUT exogenous constructs except effort expectancy as well as on behavioural intention. Two new paths among the predictor variables (e.g. facilitating condition to effort expectancy and effort expectancy to performance expectancy) are statistically significant. All constructs of UTAUT except effort expectancy have substantial positive effect on SNSs users’ intention to adopt geotagging technology. Geotagg’s use frequency strongly moderated the different relationships in the integrated UTAUT model. The study will succor different tourism firms, restaurants and SNSs service providers to maximise the adoption of geotagging technology use. It contributes to knowledge by adding new moderator, new paths as well as integrating personal characteristics (e.g. PIIT) in UTAUT.

Online Social Networking Sites (SNSs) and other Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are transforming the epistemological foundations of justice systems and influencing knowledge production concerning criminal justice and its impact. This article focuses on a dimension of criminal justice which is the impact of imprisonment on families and seeks to unravel how knowledge about this problem is produced on SNSs. To this end, it draws on a study that explored conversational networks of key stakeholders on the SNS, Twitter. Building on insights from the study, the paper unravels interdependent sociotechnical dynamics that reproduce the offline marginality of affected families and operate as barriers to equitable knowledge production. Through its analysis of the dynamics, the paper provides new insights and advances the sparse criminological scholarship on the intersections of AI systems and the delivery of justice. It specifically highlights exclusionary epistemic processes that are fomented by the infrastructure of AI systems and the social contexts in which they are deployed.

The measurement of cyberbullying has been marked by several inconsistencies that lead to difficulties in cross-study comparisons of the frequency of occurrence and the impact of cyberbullying. Consequently, the first aim of this study was to develop a measure of experience with and impact of cyberbullying victimization in social networking sites in adolescents. The second aim was to investigate the psychometric properties of a purpose-built measure (Social Networking Experiences Questionnaire [SNEQ]). Exploratory factor analysis on 253 adolescent social networking sites users produced a six-factor model of impact. However, one factor was removed because of low internal consistency. Cronbach’s alpha was higher than .76 for the victimization and remaining five impact subscales. Furthermore, correlation coefficients for the Victimization scale and related dimensions showed good construct validity. The utility of the SNEQ for victim support personnel, research, and cyberbullying education/prevention programs is discussed.
