Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, and in Africa, given the lack of resources, they are likely to be even more acute. The usefulness of Traditional African Healers in helping to mitigate the effects of pandemic has been neglected. We argue from an ethical perspective that these healers can and should have an important role in informing and guiding local communities in Africa on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Particularly, we argue not only that much of the philosophy underlying Traditional African Medicine is adequate and compatible with preventive measures for COVID-19, but also that Traditional African Healers have some unique cultural capital for influencing and enforcing such preventive measures. The paper therefore suggests that not only given the cultural context of Africa where Traditional African Healers have a special role, but also because of the normative strength of the Afro-communitarian philosophy that informs it, there are good ethical reasons to endorse policies that involve Traditional Healers in the fight against COVID-19. We also maintain that concerns about Traditional African Healers objectionably violating patient confidentiality or being paternalistic are much weaker in the face of COVID-19.

This chapter highlights the fateful moment of the Gaokao itself, investigating the important role of attitude and composure in examination success. It shows how head teachers personify an educational contradiction, both helping children to overcome their deficits in cultural capital and encouraging them to take individual responsibility for their examination results. It also considers the relationship between knowledge and attitude, elaborating how the capriciousness of attitude is accounted for. The chapter cites Gaokao observers that commonly remark how top students can choke on the exam, whereas dark horses can tap into their latent potential to surge from behind. It elaborates how the Gaokao assesses the diligent accumulation of knowledge and the less tangible aspects of character, particularly testing the ability of students to maintain composure and mental flexibility in the face of high pressure.

Objective: Identify what is the burnout syndrome, how it affects professionals, what are its symptoms, what is the role of nursing in the face of this syndrome. Methods: This study is a bibliographic search, where information was extracted from the MEDILINE and SCIELO database. With the following descriptors: Alzheimer, Burnout and Elderly. Articles were selected between the years 2009 to 2013. We excluded all those that were not related to the proposed theme. Results: Burnout syndrome or professional exhaustion syndrome is a type of occupational and institutional stress, constituting one of the main occupational diseases in the world with a predilection for health professionals, education and assistance services. Inducing physical and psychological illness, compromising the lives of these professionals and the result of their work (COSTA, 2009). Bunourt’s syndrome affects caregivers in a very subtle and insidious way, the symptoms of this syndrome are diverse and can be divided into four levels: Physical health level, emotional level, psychic level, behavioral level (GUSMÃO et al., 2010). Nursing should contribute to preventive measures where it is possible to better understand how the syndrome starts and how it evolves over time, thus allowing it to act early in preventive actions (PEREIRA, 2013). Conclusion: There is a need to seek alternatives and expand studies related to minimizing factors that predispose to the appearance of burnout syndrome in caregivers of elderly people with Alzheimer’s.

General Alexander Kireyev (1833-1910) was a Slavophile leader, theologian and political writer who took part in a series of religious and philosophical meetings in the early 20th century St. Petersburg. The article refers to his report on dogmatic development that was presented at one of the meetings. Kireyev expressed his views on several problems regarded as vital in the Russian society: interaction between the Church and intelligentsia, criticism of Western Christian denominations, scopes for ecumenical dialogue, relations between universal dogma and local tradition, impact of ethnic mentality on the development of religion, prospects and conditions needed to develop new foundations for an original Russian culture. The article examines Kireyev’s endeavor to put an ethical doctrine over the church’s dogmatic teaching. Kireyev’s works and diaries are quoted to help the reader to conceive the cultural context and the mindset of the Slavophile religious thinkers in the age of the debate over a renewal of the Russian Church and reform of her polities. The author stresses the influence of idealistic philosophy and liberal Western theology (mainly Old Catholic) on the development of Kireyev’s ideas, mentioning also his connections with Solovyov and Dostoevsky and evaluating Kireyev’s views on the special role of religious philosophy and literature in developing new foundations for an original Russian culture.

Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic poses an immense threat to healthcare systems worldwide. At a time when elective surgeries are being suspended and questions are being raised about how the remaining procedures on COVID-19 positive patients can be performed safely, it is important to consider the potential role of robotic assisted surgery within the current pandemic. Recently, several robotic assisted surgery societies have issued their recommendations. To date, however, no specific recommendations are available for cardiothoracic robotic assisted surgery in COVID-19 positive patients. Here, we discuss the potential risks, benefits, and preventive measures that need to be taken into account when considering robotic assisted surgery for cardiothoracic indications in patients with confirmed COVID-19. It is suggested that robotic assisted surgery might have various advantages such as early recovery after surgery, shorter hospital stay, and reduced loss of blood and fluids as well as smaller incisions. However, electrosurgical and ultrasonic devices, as well as CO2 insufflation should be managed with caution to prevent the risk of aerosolization of viral particles.

The vulnerability of older hospital patients is increasingly understood in physical terms, often referred to as frailty. This reduces their vulnerability to the functioning body regardless of the psycho-socio-cultural context they are in, and it ignores the role of the hospital environment. This paper starts from a care ethical perspective on care and uses insights from empirical work that shows that hospitalization of older patients is characterized by experiences of uncertainty that give rise to feelings of vulnerability. This paper presents a model that clarifies how vulnerability occurs in the interplay between the embodied subject, others, daily life and the hospital, and shows its dynamic and relational nature. Our complementary perspective of vulnerability is vital for nursing practice in that it starts from the situatedness of the older patient and not only points at what is missing but also at what is of significance to the older patient. Taking into account this perspective helps improving relational care.
