Abstract We examine a determinant of cultural persistence that has emerged from a class of models in evolutionary anthropology: the similarity of the environment across generations. Within these models, when the environment is more stable across generations, the traits that have evolved up to the previous generation are more likely to be suitable for the current generation. In equilibrium, a greater value is placed on tradition and there is greater cultural persistence. We test this hypothesis by measuring the variability of climatic measures across 20-year generations from 500–1900CE. Employing a variety of tests that use different samples and empirical strategies, we find that populations with ancestors who lived in environments with more cross-generational instability place less importance on maintaining tradition today and exhibit less cultural persistence.

AbstractWhitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.

AbstractWe develop a figure of merit for SETI observations which is anexplicitfunction of the EIRP of the transmitters, which allows us to treat sky surveys and targeted searches on the same footing. For each EIRP, we calculate the product of terms measuring the number of stars within detection range, the range of frequencies searched, and the number of independent observations for each star. For a given set of SETI observations, the result is a graph of merit versus transmitter EIRP. We apply this technique to several completed and ongoing SETI programs. The results provide a quantitative confirmation of the expected qualitative difference between sky surveys and targeted searches: the Project Phoenix targeted search is good for finding transmitters in the 109to 1014W range, while the sky surveys do their best at higher powers. Current generation optical SETI is not yet competitive with microwave SETI.

The current generation is facing a number of challenges related to their future. The education system is looking for adequate ways to change and adaptively focus the learning process. The application of a competency approach in education has a positive effect. The article attempts to explain the essence of the competency approach and its projections in the preparation, education and upbringing of children and students. Basic elements that are leading in organizing the learning process are outlined. Concepts necessary for subsequent theoretical research and methodological formulations are defined.

Thus education builds the character contained in it, influences the meaning of life, in the nature of the daily habits of the younger generation, through direct or indirect moral messages, thereby slowly forming the traits to further uphold the nation formed by younger roles, current generation and later.

Abstract We present an overview of Ruby, the latest generation of backside optical laser voltage probing (LVP) tools [1, 2]. Carrying over from the previous generation of IDS2700 systems, Ruby is capable of measuring waveforms up to 15GHz at low core voltages 0.500V and below. Several new optical capabilities are incorporated; these include a solid immersion lens (SIL) for improved imaging resolution [3] and a polarization difference probing (PDP) optical platform [4] for phase modulation detection. New developments involve Jitter Mitigation, a scheme that allows measurements of jittery signals from circuits that are internally driven by the IC’s onboard Phase Locked Loop (PLL). Additional timing features include a Hardware Phase-Locked Loop (HWPLL) scheme for improved locking of the LVP’s Mode-Locked Laser (MLL) to the tester clock as well as a clockless scheme to improve the LVP’s usefulness and user friendliness. This paper presents these new capabilities and compares these with those of the previous generation of LVP systems [5, 6].

AbstractCybersickness (CS) is a term used to refer to symptoms, such as nausea, headache, and dizziness that users experience during or after virtual reality immersion. Initially discovered in flight simulators, commercial virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD) of the current generation also seem to cause CS, albeit in a different manner and severity. The goal of this work is to summarize recent literature on CS with modern HMDs, to determine the specificities and profile of immersive VR-caused CS, and to provide an outlook for future research areas. A systematic review was performed on the databases IEEE Xplore, PubMed, ACM, and Scopus from 2013 to 2019 and 49 publications were selected. A summarized text states how different VR HMDs impact CS, how the nature of movement in VR HMDs contributes to CS, and how we can use biosensors to detect CS. The results of the meta-analysis show that although current-generation VR HMDs cause significantly less CS ($$p<0.001$$ p < 0.001 ), some symptoms remain as intense. Further results show that the nature of movement and, in particular, sensory mismatch as well as perceived motion have been the leading cause of CS. We suggest an outlook on future research, including the use of galvanic skin response to evaluate CS in combination with the golden standard (Simulator Sickness Questionnaire, SSQ) as well as an update on the subjective evaluation scores of the SSQ.

The extensive usage of power electronic components creates harmonics in the voltage and current, because of which, the quality of delivered power gets affected. Therefore, it is essential to improve the quality of power, as we reveal in this paper. The problems of load voltage, source current, and power factors are mitigated by utilizing the unified power flow controller (UPFC), in which a combination of series and shunt converters are combined through a DC-link capacitor. To retain the link voltage and to maximize the delivered power, a PV module is introduced with a high gain converter, named the switched clamped diode boost (SCDB) converter, in which the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm is instigated for tracking the maximum power. To retain the link-voltage of the capacitor, the artificial neural network (ANN) is implemented. A proper control of UPFC is highly essential, which is achieved by the reference current generation with the aid of a hybrid algorithm. A genetic algorithm, hybridized with the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), is utilized for the generation of a switching sequence, and the generated pulse has been given to both the series and shunt converters through the PWM generator. Thus, the source current and load voltage harmonics are mitigated with reactive power compensation, which results in attaining a unity power factor. The projected methodology is simulated by MATLAB and it is perceived that the total harmonic distortion (THD) of 0.84% is attained, with almost a unity power factor, and this is validated with FPGA Spartan 6E hardware.

Pyocyanin was the first natural phenazine described. The molecule is synthesized by about 95% of the strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. From discovery up to now, pyocyanin has been characterised by a very rich and avant-garde history, which includes its use in antimicrobial therapy, even before the discovery of penicillin opened the era of antibiotic therapy, as well as its use in electric current generation. Exhibiting an exuberant blue colour and being easy to obtain, this pigment is the subject of the present review, aiming to narrate its history as well as to unveil its mechanisms and suggest new horizons for applications in different areas of engineering, biology and biotechnology.
