The incidence of postharvest fruit rot and associated fungi was studied in stored cranberries in Michigan in 2000 and 2001. Ripe cranberries were harvested from eight commercial farms in southwest and northeast Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula. Eight cranberry cultivars were represented: Stevens, Searles, Le Munyon, Pilgrim, Ben Lear, Bergman, Beckwith, and WSU 61. Fruit rot incidence was assessed within 1 week after harvest. Remaining sound fruit was stored for 2 months at 5°C, and fungi were isolated from rotted fruit after 1 and 2 months of storage. Year and region, but not cultivar, significantly affected the overall rate of rot development in storage. Storage rot levels generally were lower in 2001 than in 2000, particularly in southern Michigan. A high incidence of field rot at harvest did not necessarily lead to a high incidence of storage rot. Storage rot tended to be more severe in the northern than in the southern growing region. Fungi most frequently associated with storage rot were Fusicoccum putrefaciens, Colletotrichum acutatum, Coleophoma empetri, Phomopsis vaccinii, and Phyllosticta elongata. F. putrefaciens was the predominant storage rot fungus in northern Michigan in both years and caused up to 80% fruit rot in storage. C. empetri and P. elongata also were isolated more frequently from beds in northern than southern Michigan in 2001. The cvs. Pilgrim and Stevens were more susceptible to storage rot caused by Colletotrichum acutatum, and Bergman and WSU 61 were more susceptible to storage rot caused by Phomopsis vaccinii than some of the other cultivars.

A survey was conducted over a 3-year period to determine the frequencies and distributions of fruit-rotting fungi in New Jersey cranberry beds. In the first 2 years of the study, Physalospora vaccinii and Glomerella cingulata were the most prevalent and widespread field-rotting fungi. In the third year, the frequency of G. cingulata declined markedly. Other species such as Coleophoma empetri, Phyllosticta vaccinii, and Phomopsis vaccinii were isolated at high frequencies from a limited number of locations. Storage-rotting fungi including Allantophomopsis cytisporea and A. lycopodina were isolated at low frequencies, but were widely distributed within the growing region. On sound fruit, a somewhat different profile emerged. Fungi such as Phyllosticta elongata, Alternaria spp., and Physalospora vaccinii were commonly isolated. In comparisons among different cranberry cultivars, no differences in the fungal profiles were seen. This was interpreted to indicate that if differences in fruit-rot resistance exist, they are likely to be general forms of resistance rather than fungal species-specific mechanisms.

Samples of ripe fruit were taken at harvest from all eight commercial cranberry farms in Michigan over a 3-year period to determine the distribution and incidence of fruit rot diseases and the fungal pathogens associated with rotted fruit. Totals of 23, 33, and 28 beds were sampled in 1999, 2000, and 2001, respectively. Fruit rot incidence varied widely among beds and farms and ranged from 5 to 97% (mean 33.4%) in 1999, 1 to 91% (mean 26.3%) in 2000, and 1 to 67% (mean 12.8%) in 2001. Differences in fruit rot incidence were observed among cultivars, but rankings differed among farms. In general, cultivars Ben Lear, Bergman, and Pilgrim tended to have lower and Beckwith and WSU61 higher fruit rot incidence than other cultivars grown in the same location. Colletotrichum acutatum, Pestalotia vaccinii, and Phyllosticta vaccinii were the fungi most frequently recovered from rotted fruit. Fusicoccum putrefaciens, Phomopsis vaccinii, Physalospora vaccinii, Allantophomopsis lycopodina, Coleophoma empetri, and Botrytis cinerea were isolated occasionally in 1999. The isolation frequency of Physalospora vaccinii, Phomopsis vaccinii, and C. empetri increased markedly in 2000. Glomerella cingulata was first detected in 2001. Fusicoccum putrefaciens was most common in the northern and Glomerella cingulata in the southern growing areas. A comparison of sound and rotted fruit from selected beds showed that Phyllosticta elongata predominated in sound fruit, whereas G. cingulata predominated in rotted fruit.

Cranberry fruit rot is an economically important disease complex comprised of as many as 15 different fungi that destroy cranberries in the field and/or after harvest. We evaluated fungicides in six field trials over 3 years for their ability to reduce the incidence of cranberry fruit rot and for their specificity in controlling six principal pathogens in the complex: Coleophoma empetri, Colletotrichum acutatum, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Phomopsis vaccinii, Phyllosticta vaccinii, and Physalospora vaccinii. Fruit rot incidence and efficacy of fungicides varied greatly among replicate plots within trials and among trials, often making it difficult to discern significant differences among treatments. However, in general, the newer strobilurin and sterol demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides were at least as effective as the industry standards, chlorothalonil and mancozeb. An exception was the DMI fungicide fenbuconazole, which was ineffective in three of five trials. Compared to other fungicides, fenbuconazole was weak in controlling Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, which along with Coleophoma empetri, dominated among fungi isolated from rotten berries. The results are being used to develop disease management programs that control the key fruit rot pathogens with reduced reliance on environmentally risky and potentially carcinogenic fungicides. Tomato production in Trinidad has suffered considerable losses in yield and fruit quality due to infections of hitherto surmised etiology. In order to develop strategies for controlling viral diseases in tomato, the relative distribution and incidence of seven viruses that commonly infect tomato were determined. Of the 362 samples tested, Potato yellow mosaic Trinidad virus (PYMTV) was found in every farm except two and was present at relatively high incidence throughout the country. Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and Tobacco etch virus (TEV) were found in fewer farms and at lower incidences while the other viruses were absent. Single infections of either virus were more common than double infections and multiple infections were rare but present. The results indicated that PYMTV is the predominant and most important viral pathogen in tomato production systems in Trinidad; however, begomovirus disease management strategies will also have to accommodate controls Accepted for publication 10 January 2006. One of the chief characteristics of heritage speakers is that they range in proficiency from “overhearers” to “native” speakers. To date, the vast majority of linguistic and psycholinguistic studies have characterized the non-target-like linguistic abilities of heritage speakers as a product of incomplete acquisition and/or attrition due to reduced exposure and opportunities to use the language during childhood. This article focuses on the other side of the problem, emphasizing instead the high incidence of native-like abilities in adult heritage speakers. I illustrate this issue with recent experimental evidence from gender agreement in Spanish, a grammatical feature that is mastered at almost 100% accuracy in production by native speakers;yet it is one of the most difficult areas to master for non-native speakers, including near-natives.I discuss how age of acquisition and language-learning experience explain these effects.

A young science serves its purpose if it leads not only to new knowledge, but to new insights and concepts. This article opens with examples to illustrate some former thinking that the introduction of pharmacogenetic has overcome. Pharmacogenetic case histories from discovery to the present illustrate the interlocking of observations, technical advances, and changing concepts. There are striking biological similarities between pharmacogenetics and those inborn factors that cause resistance to infectious disease: Both represent person-to-person variations that may help the survival of populations, one when facing massive toxic exposures, the other when facing plagues and epidemics. Thus pharmacogenetics represents a biologically necessary variability of the defenses against chemical intruders, and this includes drugs. While this variability is desirable, drug toxicity occurring on the basis of this variability must be avoided. The most successful defendants against toxicity due to polymorphic (ie, high incidence) variants should be the designers of new drugs. The only defender concerned with rare variants can be the attentive clinician.

Persimmon trees are important for their fruit as well as their colorful fruit and foliage in the fall. Persimmon fruit (Japanese persimmon, Diospyros kaki cv. Fuyu) were collected in November 2008 from a tree in Windsor, NC, located in the Coastal Plain. Fruit were not symptomatic on the tree but developed dark lesions after harvest. Isolations from six fruit yielded seven isolates of Colletotrichum acutatum J. H. Simmonds. After incubation at 25°C under continuous light for 15 days on potato dextrose agar (PDA), all isolates had gray aerial mycelium, but the inverse sides of the plates of six isolates were maroon and one was beige. Masses of salmon-colored conidia were formed first in the center of the colonies, then were observed scattered across the colonies in older cultures. Conidia were hyaline, one-celled, elliptic with one or both ends pointed, and measured 8.1 to 16.3 × 3.1 to 5 μm. Setae and sclerotia were not observed. There were also dark structures measuring 1 to 10 mm that were partially embedded in the agar that contained conidia. Cultural and conidial characteristics of the isolates were similar to those of C. acutatum (3). PCR amplification was performed with the species-specific primer pair CaInt2/ITS4 (2) and genomic DNA from the original isolates and isolates obtained from inoculated fruit. An amplification product of approximately 490 bp, which is specific for C. acutatum, was observed. To fulfill Koch's postulates, persimmon fruit obtained from the grocery store were surface disinfested with 0.5% sodium hypochlorite and sterile filter paper disks dipped in conidial suspensions (1 × 105 conidia/ml) of two C. acutatum isolates (maroon and beige reverse) or sterile, deionized water were placed on the fruit. Three fruit were inoculated per treatment and the disks were placed on four locations on each fruit. Parafilm was wrapped around the diameter of the fruit to keep the filter paper disks moist and in place. Fruit were placed in moist chambers and incubated at 25°C. After 3 days, the Parafilm was removed and the fruit returned to the moist chambers. Small, dark lesions were observed on fruit inoculated with each isolate of C. acutatum when the filter paper disks were removed. Ten days after inoculation, dark lesions and acervuli with salmon-colored masses of conidia were observed on fruit inoculated with both isolates of C. acutatum and the fruit were soft. After 12 days, there were abundant masses of conidia and the inoculated areas were decayed. Control fruit remained firm and did not develop symptoms. Cultures obtained from the fruit and the conidia produced were typical of the isolates used to inoculate the fruit. C. acutatum has been reported to cause fruit rot on persimmon fruit in New Zealand (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. acutatum on persimmon fruit in the United States. The introduction of autovenous coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) marked the era of surgical revascularization in patients with coronary artery disease. It provided effective treatment for angina and significantly improved the long-term prognosis. Venous transplants today remain the most popular conduits in coronary surgery due to their availability, ease of harvesting, and the absence of length restrictions. Despite the advantages of autovenous CABG, the main disadvantage is the high incidence of venous graft failure, which represents an important and unresolved problem in cardiac and cardiovascular surgery. On the other hand, the traditional allocation of a large saphenous vein implies the dissection of soft tissues throughout the length of the isolated conduit. Traumatic dissection causes a long-lasting persistent pain syndrome after surgery, frequent abnormalities in  skin sensitivity, and a high incidence of wound complications in the lower extremities. These complications lengthen the period of rehabilitation of patients and worsen the quality of life. There is an approach of isolating the vein in a block with surrounding tissues to optimize the long-term functioning of the venous shunt, however, this technique is even more traumatic than the traditional method, and therefore its use is limited in practice. On the other hand, the introduction of minimally invasive methods of isolation allowed to reduce the incidence of wound complications and to improve the cosmetic result, but there is no convincing data regarding the effect on the consistency of shunts in the long-term postoperative period. The problems associated with the use of venous conduits in CABG are multifaceted, and their solutions are necessary to improve the effectiveness of surgical revascularization.

Summer diseases can cause significant yield losses in processing peach varieties, such as the ‘Babygold’ lines. In this study we identified and characterized the pathogens responsible for disease outbreaks in two orchards (PH and JC) located in the northern ‘Piedmont’ area of South Carolina. Three pathogens, Geotrichum candidum, Colletotrichum acutatum, and Botryosphaeria dothidea, the causal agents of sour rot, anthracnose, and Botryosphaeria fruit rot disease respectively, were identified on fruit from orchard PH using symptomology, culture and spore morphology, and ribosomal DNA analysis. G. candidum and C. acutatum were also isolated from symptomatic fruit from orchard JC. The QoI fungicide azoxystrobin and a mixture of pyraclostrobin and boscalid were evaluated for their in vitro efficacy against five isolates of each of the three pathogens to investigate their possible usefulness in designing management strategies. Azoxystrobin inhibited mycelial growth of C. acutatum isolates (EC50 values of 0.01 to 0.55 mg/liter) but was ineffective against mycelium of G. candidum and B. dothidea isolates (EC50 values >300 mg/liter). The pyraclostrobin-boscalid mixture was highly effective against mycelium of C. acutatum (EC50 values of 0.01 to 0.05 mg/liter) and B. dothidea isolates (EC50 values of 0.02 to 0.03 mg/liter), but only marginally effective against mycelium of G. candidum (EC50 values 15.79 to 39.03 mg/liter). This study provides a diagnostic guide of pathogens that can cause summer diseases on ‘Babygold’ peaches and reports their in vitro sensitivity to registered respiration inhibitor fungicides. Captan, dichlofluanid at a high and a low rate, thiram, and a mixture of captan and thiram were tested in a field trial to control gray mold fruit rot caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers. on the strawberry varieties Gorella, Midway, Redcoat and Sparkle. The mean marketable yield of the varieties was increased by dichlofluanid (low) and thiram but not by the other treatments over that of non-sprayed plots. Dichlofluanid (high) gave better control of pre-harvest fruit rot than captan. Dichlofluanid (high) significantly reduced mean fruit size. Redcoat yields were higher with the low rate than the high rate of dichlofluanid, but pre-harvest fruit rot control and fruit size did not differ with the two rates. Gorella yields and fruit size were smaller with captan + thiram than with captan or thiram. Thiram reduced fruit size on Midway. The varietal reaction to fungicides suggests that marketable yield is the most important variable in selecting a fungicide for the control of gray mold fruit rot of strawberries.
