This is the first report of stunting, stem distortion, delayed emergence and foliar TRV symptoms on potato in the Pacific Northwest where approximately 50% of the US potato crop is grown. The shift in use from 1,3 dichloropropene to oxamyl may suggest these symptoms will be more frequently observed in the future. Accepted for publication 19 May 2007. Published 17 September 2007.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Poelln. is a common ornamental houseplant. Although powdery mildew is a major disease of this species, there are no published reports of it in the Pacific Northwest. In August, 2002, powdery mildew was observed on six indoor K. blossfeldiana plants in an office and adjacent laboratory at the Puyallup Research and Extension Center. ABSTRACTTo resolve an inconsistency around AD 1895 between radiocarbon (14C) measurements on oak from the British Isles and Douglas fir and Sitka spruce from the Pacific Northwest, USA, we measured the 14C content in single-year tree rings from a Scots pine tree (Pinus sylvestris L.), which grew in a remote location in Saltdal, northern Norway. The dataset covers the period AD 1864–1937 and its results are in agreement with measurements from the US Pacific coast around 1895. The most likely explanation for older ages in British oak in this period seems to be 14C depletion associated with the combustion of fossil fuels.

Chinese matrimony-vine (Lycium chinense Mill.) is a traditional medicinal plant grown in China and used as a perennial landscape plant in North America. This report documents the presence of powdery mildew on L. chinense in the Pacific Northwest and describes and illustrates morphological features of the causal agent. It appears to be the first report of a powdery mildew caused by Arthrocladiella in the Pacific Northwest. Accepted for publication 10 November 2004. Published 8 December 2004.

In 2005, the authors encountered a previously unreported powdery mildew disease of Coreopsis verticillata L. (whorled tickseed) ‘Zagreb’ and C. auriculata L. (lobed tickseed) ‘Nana’ in central Washington and determined the causal agent to be Golovinomyces cichoracearum (DC.) VP Gelyuta. This report documents the occurrence of G. cichoracearum on Coreopsis species in the Pacific Northwest, and describes diagnostic features of the disease and causal agent. In August 2009, a grower reported a disease affecting nearly all plants in a drip-irrigated field of sweet pepper cv. Excalibur in Umatilla Co., OR. The fungus was determined to be Leveillula taurica (Lév.) G. Arnaud, previously unreported from this host in Oregon or from field-grown peppers in the Pacific Northwest. This report documents the taxonomic determination of this species and provides information about the disease outbreak, including economic impact. Accepted for publication 18 May 2010. Abstract. Two Lagrangian tracer tools are evaluated for studies on atmospheric moisture sources and pathways. In these methods, a moisture volume is assigned to each particle, which is then advected by the wind flow. Usual Lagrangian methods consider this volume to remain constant and the particle to follow flow path lines exactly. In a different approach, the initial moisture volume can be considered to depend on time as it is advected by the flow due to thermodynamic processes. In this case, the tracer volume drag must be taken into account. Equations have been implemented and moisture convection was taken into account for both Lagrangian and inertial models. We apply these methods to evaluate the intense atmospheric rivers that devastated (i) the Pacific Northwest region of the US and (ii) the western Iberian Peninsula with flooding rains and intense winds in early November 2006 and 20 May 1994, respectively. We note that the usual Lagrangian method underestimates moisture availability in the continent, while active tracers achieve more realistic results.

Chive (Allium schoenoprasum L.) is one of the specialty crops grown by farmers in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. In September, 2002, downy mildew symptoms were observed in a 0.2 hectare field planting of chive near Fall City, King County, WA. Downy mildew had not been reported previously on chive in the Pacific Northwest. Accepted for publication 15 April 2003. Published 12 May 2003.

Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) is the type member of the Tobravirus genus which also includes pea early browning and pepper ringspot viruses. The ring spot disease of peony associated with TRV has been reported in Europe and Asia and recently in Alaska but the literature is sparse regarding reports of the disease in the US. These results represent the first confirmed report of TRV in peony in Ohio, and expand the known geographic distribution of the virus. Accepted for publication 26 June 2012. Published 11 July 2012.

The Pacific Northwest has become the site of a bitterly fought struggle over the future of the remaining 10% of the region's ancient, or “old growth,” forests. The remaining stands of these forests are important components of the local economy and of the region's ecology. The article begins with a brief description of the economic and ecological crises which are now coming to fruition as a result of the loss of 90% of these forests. It then provides a description of the cultural heritage and sense of community which is being lost in the small, timber-dependent communities of the region—a social crisis resulting from the economic and ecological crises. In conclusion, the article argues that all of these crises should be understood as resulting from the political, economic, and historical circumstances which facilitated the emergence of the largest and wealthiest timber ownership.
