Ketones are known to constitute an important fraction of fuel for consumption by the brain, with brain ketone content generally thought to be low. However, the recent observation of 1-mmol/L levels of brain β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in children on the ketogenic diet suggests otherwise. The authors report the measurement of brain BHB and lactate in the occipital lobe of healthy adults using high field (4-T) magnetic resonance spectroscopy, measured in the nonfasted state and after 2-and 3-day fasting-induced ketosis. A 9-mL voxel located in the calcarine fissure was studied, detecting the BHB and lactate upfield resonances using a 1H homonuclear editing sequence. Plasma BHB levels also were measured. The mean brain BHB concentration increased from a nonfasted level of 0.05 ± 0.05 to 0.60 ± 0.26 mmol/L (after second day of fasting), increasing further to 0.98 ± 0.16 mmol/L (after the third day of fasting). The mean nonfasted brain lactate was 0.69 ± 0.17 mmol/L, increasing to 1.47 ± 0.22 mmol/L after the third day. The plasma and brain BHB levels correlated well ( r = 0.86) with a brain–plasma slope of 0.26. These data show that brain BHB rises significantly with 2-and 3-day fasting-induced ketosis. The lactate increase likely results from ketones displacing lactate oxidation without altering glucose phosphorylation and glycolysis.

The late Professor Gratiolet, in his elaborate and beautifully illustrated memoir, “Sur les Plis Cérébraux de l'Homme et des Primates,” attaches great weight in his differential diagnosis of their cerebral characters to the presence or absence of one or more members of a series of convolutions, which he designates as the plis de passage. When present, these convolutions bridge over the external perpendicular fissure of the hemisphere, and connect the parietal and temporal with the occipital lobes. By various anatomists in this country they are called bridging, connecting, or annectent convolutions. In the brain of the Chimpanzee M. Gratiolet states that the first bridging convolution is altogether wanting; that the second is present, but concealed under the operculum of the occipital lobe; that the third and fourth are superficial.

Background: Although there have been many magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies of migraine, few have focused on migraines during an attack. Here, we aimed to assess metabolite changes in the brain of patients with migraine, both during an attack and in the interictal phase.Methods: Six patients (one man and five women, mean age: 39 ± 10 years) with migraine without aura during the attack (MWoA-DA), 13 patients (three men and 10 women, mean age: 31 ± 9 years) with migraine without aura during the interictal period (MWoA-DI), and 13 healthy controls (HC) (four men and nine women, mean age: 31 ± 9 years) were studied. All subjects underwent an MRS examination focusing on the occipital lobe. Metabolite changes were investigated among three groups.Results: The MWoA-DA patients had lower glutathione/total creatine ratio (GSH/tCr) than the MWoA-DI patients and HC. Furthermore, MWoA-DI patients showed lower total choline/total creatine ratio (tCho/tCr) than those in the other two groups. The GSH/tCr ratio was positively correlated with attack frequency in the MWoA-DI group. The tCho/tCr ratio was positively correlated with attack frequency and Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) scores in the MWoA-DA group.Conclusion: The present study suggests the existence of distinct pathophysiological states between the MWoA-DA and MWoA-DI groups. Neuronal dysfunction is a possible predisposing factor for migraine attack onset, along with oxidative stress and inflammation.

AbstractThe 3D analysis of the human brain architecture at cellular resolution is still a big challenge. In this work, we propose a pipeline that solves the problem of performing neuronal mapping in large human brain samples at micrometer resolution. First, we introduce the SWITCH/TDE protocol: a robust methodology to clear and label human brain tissue. Then, we implement the 2.5D method based on a Convolutional Neural Network, to automatically detect and segment all neurons. Our method proved to be highly versatile and was applied successfully on specimens from different areas of the cortex originating from different subjects (young, adult and elderly, both healthy and pathological). We quantitatively evaluate the density and, more importantly, the mean volume of the thousands of neurons identified within the specimens. In conclusion, our pipeline makes it possible to study the structural organization of the brain and expands the histopathological studies to the third dimension.

Equine cerebral hydatid disease is described in a 7-year-old, crossbred, female horse. Clinical signs were characterized by circling gait, pressing of head against fences or objects and motor incoordination. On gross examination of the brain the hemispheres were swollen, mainly the left one. On transversal sections, a 5cm X 7cm fluid-filled cyst was observed within the lateral ventricle of the left hemisphere. The cyst extended from the parietal to the occipital lobe, and compressed the third ventricle. There was also marked mid line deviation. Histologically, the brain lesion adjacent to the cyst, was characterized by a piogranulomatous process and vacuolization of neuropil. A diagnosis of equine hydatidosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus was made on the basis of the morphometric features of protoscolices hooks.

Supercompensated brain glycogen levels may contribute to the development of hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF) following recurrent hypoglycemia (RH) by providing energy for the brain during subsequent periods of hypoglycemia. To assess the role of glycogen supercompensation in the generation of HAAF, we estimated the level of brain glycogen following RH and acute hypoglycemia (AH). After undergoing 3 hyperinsulinemic, euglycemic and 3 hyperinsulinemic, hypoglycemic clamps (RH) on separate occasions at least 1 month apart, five healthy volunteers received [1-13C]glucose intravenously over 80+ h while maintaining euglycemia. 13C-glycogen levels in the occipital lobe were measured by 13C magnetic resonance spectroscopy at ∼8, 20, 32, 44, 56, 68 and 80 h at 4 T and glycogen levels estimated by fitting the data with a biophysical model that takes into account the tiered glycogen structure. Similarly, prior 13C-glycogen data obtained following a single hypoglycemic episode (AH) were fitted with the same model. Glycogen levels did not significantly increase after RH relative to after euglycemia, while they increased by ∼16% after AH relative to after euglycemia. These data suggest that glycogen supercompensation may be blunted with repeated hypoglycemic episodes. A causal relationship between glycogen supercompensation and generation of HAAF remains to be established.

Background Migraine without aura is the most common type of migraine headache, accounting for about 80% of all migraines. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the neurochemical metabolite alterations in the occipital lobe of patients suffering from migraine without aura using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Methods Fifteen patients suffering from migraine without aura with an occipital plaque and 16 healthy controls were included in this study. Changes in the neurochemical metabolites in the occipital lobe were assessed using 1H-MRS. The ratios of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) to creatine (Cr), choline (Cho) to Cr and myo-inositol (MI) to NAA were measured by voxel volume at 8 cm3. Results The mean NAA/Cr ratio decreased significantly in patients compared to controls. Cho/Cr and MI/NAA ratios increased significantly in patients. In addition, the duration of the disease and the frequency of headache attacks were significantly associated with a decrease in the NAA/Cr ratio and an increase in the Cho/Cr ratio. Conclusions Migraine without aura shows a significant association with changes in neurochemical metabolites detectable by 1H-MRS in the occipital lobe of patients. In addition, changes in metabolic ratios showed a significant relationship with the duration of the disease and the frequency of headache attacks.

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) allows in vivo assessment of the metabolism related to human brain functions. Visual, auditory, tactile, and motor stimuli induce a temporary increase in the brain lactate level, which may act as a rapid source of energy for the activated neurons. The authors studied the metabolism of the frontal lobes during cognitive stimulation and measured local lactate levels with standard 1H-MRS, after localizing the activated area by functional MRI. Lactate levels were monitored while the subjects either silently listed numbers (baseline) or performed a silent word-generation task (stimulus-activation). The cognitive stimulus-activation produced a 50% increase in the brain lactate level in the left inferior frontal gyrus. The results show that metabolic imaging of neuronal activity related to cognition is possible using 1H-MRS.

Purpose: To evaluate the normal configuration and size of the third ventricle in second and third trimester fetuses in a normal population, and to compare our values with those of previously published studies. Material and Methods: Evaluation of fetal third ventricular width and configuration was obtained by antenatal ultrasonography in 474 fetuses with gestational age between 12 weeks and term (mean 28 weeks). Percentiles for third ventricle width were estimated by combining separate fractional polynominal regression models fitted to the mean and standard deviation, assuming that the measurements had a normal distribution at each gestational age. Appearance of the third ventricle was correlated with each gestational age. Results: The third ventricle could be visualized in 471 (99%) of 474 fetuses. The 97th percentile of the third ventricle in preterm fetuses was measured as 3.6 mm in size. The third ventricle was seen as a single echogenic line in 153 (32.4%) of 474 fetuses. Two-hundred-and-ninety-nine (61.5%) of all fetuses had parallel echogenic lines outlining a fluid-filled lumen. V-shaped third ventricular configuration was seen in only 28 (5.9%) of the fetuses. From 24 weeks to term, parallel echogenic lines were the most commonly (83.7% to 79.6%) encountered configuration for the third ventricle. Conclusion: The 97th percentile of the third ventricle in preterm fetuses was measured as 3.6 mm in size. In the early second trimester, 77% of the fetuses had a single echogenic line appearance on ultrasonography. As the brain and ventricular structures mature, a parallel echogenic line becomes the prominent ultrasonography appearance (>80% of fetuses) in third trimester healthy fetuses.

Abstract 18F-FDG and 68Ga-citrate PET/CT have both been shown to be useful in the management of tuberculosis (TB). We compared the abnormal PET findings of 18F-FDG- and 68Ga-citrate-PET/CT in patients with TB. Methods Patients with TB on anti-TB therapy were included. Patients had a set of PET scans consisting of both 18F-FDG and 68Ga-citrate. Abnormal lesions were identified, and the two sets of scans were compared. The scan findings were correlated to the clinical data as provided by the attending physician. Results 46 PET/CT scans were performed in 18 patients, 11 (61 %) were female, and the mean age was 35.7 ± 13.5 years. Five patients also had both studies for follow-up reasons during the use of anti-TB therapy. Thirteen patients were co-infected with HIV. 18F-FDG detected more lesions than 68Ga-citrate (261 vs. 166, p < 0.0001). 68Ga-citrate showed a better definition of intracerebral lesions due to the absence of tracer uptake in the brain. The mean SUVmax was higher for 18F-FDG compared to 68Ga-citrate (5.73 vs. 3.01, p < 0.0001). We found a significant correlation between the SUVmax of lesions that were determined by both tracers (r = 0.4968, p < 0.0001). Conclusion Preliminary data shows 18F-FDG-PET detects more abnormal lesions in TB compared to 68Ga-citrate. However, 68Ga-citrate has better lesion definition in the brain and is therefore especially useful when intracranial TB is suspected.

This study presents a research report on improving students’ Learning results on IPA through Video. The objective was to find out whether students’ learning result improved when they are taught by using Video. It was conducted using classroom action research method. The subject of the study was the Grade IV students of SDN 187/IV Kota Jambi which is located on Jln. Adi Sucipto RT 05 Kecamatan Jambi Selatan, and the number of the students were 21 persons. The instruments used were test. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the on fisrt sycle was 65,4 (42,85%) and the mean on cycle two was 68,5 (37,15%) and the mean of the third cycle was 81,4 (100%). Then it can be concluded that the use of video on learning IPA can improve the students’ learning result. It is suggested that teachers should use video as one of the media to improve students’ learning result on IPA.Keywords : IPA, students’ learning result, video
