Abstract Varicella infection during pregnancy has serious and/or difficult implications and in some cases lethal outcome. Though epidemiological studies in developing countries reveal that a significant proportion of patients may remain susceptible during pregnancy, such an estimate of susceptible women is not known in India. We designed this study to study the prevalence and factors associated with susceptibility to varicella among rural and urban pregnant women in South India. We prospectively recruited 430 pregnant women and analysed their serum varicella IgG antibodies as surrogates for protection. We estimated seroprevalence, the validity of self-reported history of chickenpox and factors associated with varicella susceptibility. We found 23 (95% CI 19.1–27.3) of women were susceptible. Nearly a quarter (22.2%) of the susceptible women had a history of exposure to chickenpox anytime in the past or during the current pregnancy. Self-reported history of varicella had a positive predictive value of 82.4%. Negative history of chickenpox (adjusted prevalence ratio (PR) 1.85, 95% CI 1.15–3.0) and receiving antenatal care from a rural secondary hospital (adjusted PR 4.08, 95% CI 2.1–7.65) were significantly associated with susceptibility. We conclude that high varicella susceptibility rates during pregnancy were noted and self-reported history of varicella may not be a reliable surrogate for protection.

Abstract Background This study aimed to assess magnitude and factors associated with anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods Institution based cross sectional study design was conducted from December 1–30, 2018 on 405 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic. All pregnant women visiting the Antenatal care clinic during the study period and who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included in the study. Secondary data was collected from clients register and personal files on hemoglobin, HIV, stool, and other variables. Descriptive statistics was used to analysis some variables by using SPSS. Logistic regression was carried out to identify factors associated with anemia in pregnancy. Adjusted odds ratio with their 95% of confidence interval and p < 0.05 are consider to have significant association. Results The magnitude of Anemia in pregnant women in this study was 19.8%, (95% CI 16.00-23.70). HIV infection (AOR = 6.12(95% CI 2.19, 17.08) parasitic infestation (AOR = 11.88 (95% CI 5.60, 25.20) and history of not taking fruit after meal during pregnancy (AOR = 3.12(95% CI 1.72, 5.67) were the major determinants of anemia. Conclusion This study showed that the magnitude of anemia among pregnant women was high especially at third trimester. Living with HIV /AIDS, parasitic infestation and no history of taking fruits after meal were the main factors.

Background Gestational diabetes is emerging as a serious public health problem in Nigeria where the largest number of people with diabetes in Africa occurs. Current studies in Nigeria give an overall prevalence of gestational diabetes as 13.4% among pregnant women with unidentified risk factors. Aims and Objectives This study aimed at investigating the risk factors associated with gestational diabetes. Materials and Methods A cross-section analytical study design was adopted for this research and comprising a total of 100 pregnant women receiving ante-natal health care service at the Federal Medical Center, Owerri. A structured questionnaire including a set of detailed pre-determined questions was administered on the subjects. Data collected were analyzed statistically, using chi-square and T test. Results The results obtained suggest that there is a significant relationship (p<0.05) between previous macrosomic baby, parity, previous history of caesarean section, family history of diabetes and occurrence of gestational diabetes, respectively. However, there is no significant relationship (p>0.05) between history of miscarriages and stillbirth, socioeconomic status and occurrence of gestational diabetes. A family history of diabetes is independently and significantly associated with the development of gestational diabetes itself even after adjusting for other risk factors. Conclusion This study will be a working tool to guide obstetricians and midwives in counseling and advising women of their risk of developing GDM. Abstract Background: Birth preparedness and complication readiness is an approach that inspires pregnant women, their families and individuals to successfully design strategy for childbirths and deal with emergencies. In developing countries, world health organization estimates that more than 300 million women suffer from short-term and long-term complications related to pregnancy and child birth. In Ethiopia only 32% women have birth preparedness. The aim of this study is to assess practice and Associated factors of birth preparedness and complication readiness among Women Yirgalem General Hospital, Sidama Zone, Southern Ethiopia, 2019Methods: Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted from September 1st to 30th, 2019. A total of 422 pregnant women were randomly selected and interviewed by using pretested structured questionnaire. Data was entered by Epi-data version 3.1 and the analysis was done by SPSS version 21. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with birth preparedness and complication readiness.Result: From 422 study participants, 356(48.6%) (95% CI: 46.9%, 49.8%) have birth preparedness and complication readiness practice. Age of respondent ≥ 37 years (AOR =4.2, 95% C.I =1.23, 14.24) and between 25 to 30 (AOR=2.35, 95% C.I =1.1, 5.1); level of education College and above(AOR=5.59, 95% C.I 2.8, 11.2)and secondary school (AOR=9.5, 95% C.I 3.99-22); previous history of ANC follow up (AOR=4.33, 95% C.I = 2.46, 7.61) and history of birth at health facility (AOR=3.09, 95% C.I= 1.72, 5.56) where factors associated with birth preparedness and complication readiness practice. Conclusion: Relatively higher birth preparedness and complication readiness practice was observed in this study when compared with previous studies. Health extension workers and health care provider should encouraged women to actively utilize the health services and the governments with other stakeholders should works on antenatal care and institutional delivery by focusing on women those has no formal education.

Abstract Background: Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is a commonly reported maternal morbidity that negatively impacts the well-being of women during pregnancy and extends long term into the post-partum period. The burden of maternal morbidity; including pregnancy-related PGP; has been overlooked in Ethiopia to date. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and identify factors associated with pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy in North West Ethiopia.Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among pregnant women visiting the antenatal care clinic in Obstetrics ‘outpatient department at the University of Gondar comprehensive specialized hospital in Gondar. Data were collected by interview method using structured questionnaires, patient medical record reviews, and physical measurements. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression model analyses were used to identify factors associated with PGP. Results: A total of 424 participants with gestational ages ranging from 6 to 39 weeks participated in this study. The age of the study participants ranged from 18 to 44 years with a mean age of (27 ±4.6 years). The overall cumulative prevalence of pelvic girdle pain among pregnant women was 103 (24.3%), 95% CI (20.3, 28.8). The major associated factors with pelvic girdle pain were previous history of pelvic girdle pain (AOR 16.08; 95% CI, 8.47-30.51), previous history of back pain (AOR 1.66; 95% CI, 1.5-4.24) and having children (AOR 1.42; 95% CI, 1.29-3.76).Conclusion: One-quarter of pregnant Ethiopian women reported pelvic girdle pain. Many respondents endured pain on multiple occasions and association with the previous history of PGP might be an episode of relapse. PGP must be considered a major pregnancy-related morbidity, and progress in the intervention of PGP is vital to enhance the quality of life in this population.

Abstract Background As the birth policy has been adjusted from one-child-one-couple to universal two-child-one-couple in China, there is an increasing number of women undergoing a second pregnancy after a previous cesarean section (CS). Undertaking an elective repeat CS (ERCS) has been taken for granted and has thus become a major contributor to the increasing CS rate in China. Promoting trial of labor after CS (TOLAC) can reduce the CS rate without compromising delivery outcomes. This study aimed to investigate Chinese obstetricians’ perspectives regarding TOLAC, and the factors associated with their decision-making regarding recommending TOLAC to pregnant women with a history of CS under the two-child policy. Methods A cross-sectional survey was carried out between May and July 2018. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with the obstetricians’ intention to recommend TOLAC to pregnant women with a history of CS. The independent variables included sociodemographic factors and perceptions regarding TOLAC (selection criteria for TOLAC, basis underlying the selection criteria for TOLAC, and perceived challenges regarding promoting TOLAC). Results A total of 426 obstetricians were surveyed, with a response rate of ≥83%. The results showed that 31.0% of the obstetricians had no intention to recommend TOLAC to pregnant women with a history of CS. Their decisions were associated with the perceived lack of confidence regarding undergoing TOLAC among pregnant women with a history of CS and their families (odds ratio [OR] = 2.31; 95% CI: 1.38–1.38); obstetricians’ uncertainty about the safety of TOLAC for pregnant women with a history of CS (OR = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.27–0.96), and worries about medical lawsuits due to adverse delivery outcomes (OR = 0.14; 95% CI: 0.07–0.31). The main reported challenges regarding performing TOLAC were lack of clear guidelines for predicting or avoiding the risks associated with TOLAC (83.4%), obstetricians’ uncertainty about the safety of TOLAC for women with a history of CS (81.2%), pregnant women’s unwillingness to accept the risks associated with TOLAC (81.0%) or demand for ERCS (80.7%), and the perceived lack of confidence (77.5%) or understanding (69.7%) regarding undergoing TOLAC among pregnant women and their families. Conclusion A proportion of Chinese obstetricians did not intend to recommend TOLAC to pregnant women with a history of CS. This phenomenon was closely associated with obstetricians’ concerns about TOLAC safety and perceived attitudes of the pregnant women and their families regarding TOLAC. Effective measures are needed to help obstetricians predict and reduce the risks associated with TOLAC, clearly specify the indications for TOLAC, improve labor management, and popularize TOLAC in China. Additionally, public health education on TOLAC is necessary to improve the understanding of TOLAC among pregnant women with a history of CS and their families, and to improve their interactions with their obstetricians regarding shared decision making.

The aim of the study: To determine the risk factors associated with the incidence of placenta previa in mothers who gave birth at RSUD Daya Makassar City. Method: Quantitative Research, with a cross sectional approach. The design of this study was used with the goal to knowing the risk factors associated with the incidence of placenta previa in mothers who gave birth at RSUD Daya Kota Makassar in 2020. The population in this study were all mothers who experienced placenta previa recorded as data in the INC room at RSUD. Daya City of Makassar in 2020. The sample in this study were women who experienced placenta previa recorded in the INC room data at RSUD Daya Kota Makassar in 2020. Results: This study shows that 15 respondents studied showed that there was a relationship between age, parity, history of curettage, and the distance between pregnancies to the incidence of placenta previa. Based on the results of the chi square test, the results obtained were age (p = 0.019), parity (p = 0.005), history of curettage (p = 0.020) and pregnancy distance (p = 0.020). Conclusion: in this study there is a significant relationship between age, parity, history of curettage, and the distance between pregnancies to the incidence of placenta previa at RSUD Daya Kota Makassar. Suggestion: Suggestions for health workers need to increase antenatal supervision of pregnant women who have a history of obstetrics, so that risky pregnant women can be managed properly
