The dynamical integrity, a new concept proposed by J.M.T. Thompson, and developed by the authors, is used to interpret experimental results. After reviewing the main issues involved in this analysis, including the proposal of a new integrity measure able to capture in an easy way the safe part of basins, attention is dedicated to two experiments, a rotating pendulum and a micro-electro-mechanical system, where the theoretical predictions are not fulfilled. These mechanical systems, the former at the macro-scale and the latter at the micro-scale, permit a comparative analysis of different mechanical and dynamical behaviours. The fact that in both cases the dynamical integrity permits one to justify the difference between experimental and theoretical results, which is the main achievement of this paper, shows the effectiveness of this new approach and suggests its use in practical situations. The men of experiment are like the ant, they only collect and use; the reasoners resemble spiders, who make cobwebs out of their own substance. But the bee takes the middle course: it gathers its material from the flowers of the garden and field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own. Not unlike this is the true business of philosophy (science); for it neither relies solely or chiefly on the powers of the mind, nor does it take the matter which it gathers from natural history and mechanical experiments and lay up in the memory whole, as it finds it, but lays it up in the understanding altered and digested. Therefore, from a closer and purer league between these two faculties, the experimental and the rational (such as has never been made), much may be hoped. Scientific men are rather fond of saying pontifically that one ought to be quite sure of one's observational facts before embarking on theory. Fortunately those who give this advice do not practice what they preach. Observation and theory get on best when they are mixed together, both helping one another in the pursuit of truth. It is a good rule not to put overmuch confidence in a theory until it has been confirmed by observation. I hope I shall not shock the experimental physicists too much if I add that it is also a good rule not to put overmuch confidence in the observational results that are put forward until they have been confirmed by theory . This paper offers a new approach to analyses of cycloconverter operation. The difference equations describing the cycloconverters' transient and steady-state operating regimes are derived. Theoretical predictions were validated by a computer program which calculated the load current of different cycloconverter topologies using the proposed methodology. The calculated and experimental results are compared and found to be in good agreement.

Part 1 of this paper (Eason et al 2004) investigates the manufacturing of a variety of microchannels, produced by wet and dry etching in silicon, as well as precision mechanical sawing in silicon and thermoset plastic. This paper describes the experimental equipment and methods used to measure the pressure flow characteristics of the manufactured channels. A custom designed test system has been built in order to test each sample using the same inlet and outlet manifolds, pressure tappings, pumping system and instrumentation. The pressure drop across each set of channels was measured using an inductive pressure transducer. The mass flow rate through the system is measured by weighing the flow from the system in a given time. The measured pressure flow behaviour was compared with theoretical values as calculated from macro scale theory. Channel dimensions used for this calculation are as measured in part 1 of this paper. Error analysis was then carried out in order to determine the overall accuracy of the experimental work and determine whether any deviation from theoretical values is of experimental significance. This step is essential in any attempt to determine whether microchannel flows are indeed different to macro scale flows in a fundamental way. The deep reactive ion etched (DRIE) channels show the most significant lack of correlation with theoretical predictions. Compensation must be introduced to deal with the difference in cross section between the perfectly rectangular channels used for the theoretical prediction and the actual cross section of the channels.

And the evidence of the contradiction between the Mu'tazilah, the Shiites, the philosophers and others has become of his sanctity and fate has become him, and the installers of the qualities of them proves the qualities known to the hearing as evidenced by the qualities known to the mind, and this is the words of the people of the Sunnah private Ahl al-Hadith and agreed, Evidence, including Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari. Therefore, the poet is considered the closest denomination to the Sunnis and Hadith.

The phenomenon of economic growth is studied by economists and statisticians in various aspects for a long time. Economic theory is devoted to assessing factors of growth in the tradition of R. Solow, R. Barrow, W. Easterly and others. During the last quarter of the century, however, the institutionalists, namely D. North, D. Wallis, B. Weingast as well as D. Acemoglu and J. Robinson, have shown the complexity of the problem of development on the part of socioeconomic and political institutions. As a result, solving the problem of how economic growth affects inequality between countries has proved extremely difficult. The modern world is very diverse in terms of development level, and the article offers a new approach to the formation of the idea of stylized facts using cluster analysis. The existing statistics allows to estimate on a unified basis the level of GDP production by 174 countries of the world for 1992—2016. The article presents a structured picture of the world: the distribution of countries in seven clusters, different in levels of development. During the period under review, there was a strong per capita GDP growth in PPP in the middle of the distribution, poverty in various countries declined markedly. At the same time, in 1992—2016, the difference increased not only between rich and poor groups of countries, but also between clusters.

Although the vocation of Christian virtuoso was invented and named by Robert Boyle, Francis Bacon provided the archtype. A Christian virtuoso is an experimental natural philosopher who professes Christianity, who endeavors to unite empiricism and supernatural belief in an intellectual life. In his program for the renewal of the learning Bacon prescribed that the empirical study of nature be the basis of all the sciences, including not only the study of physical things, but of human society, and literature. He insisted that natural causes only be used to explain natural events and proposed not to mix theology with natural philosophy. This became a rule of the Royal Society of London, of which Boyle was a principal founder. Bacon’s rule also had a theological use, to preserve the purity and the divine authority of revelation. In the mind of the Christian virtuoso, nature and divine revelation were separate but complementary sources of truth.

Another novelist provides in some respects a point in between Chariton and Heliodorus. His elaborate expatiation on tears and the lover put rhythm at the service of an intricate treatment of the mind and body, and a shrewd depiction of amorous self-control and manipulation. The first-person narrative adds a further stratum of sophistication to this handling of the speaker’s rival and enemy. Achilles Tatius demonstrates further, in contrast with Chariton, the range of possibilities for the exploitation of rhythm seen already in the difference of Chariton and Plutarch. Comparison with Heliodorus brings out Achilles’ elegance.


This survey of research on psychology in five volumes is a part of a series undertaken by the ICSSR since 1969, which covers various disciplines under social science. Volume Five of this survey, Explorations into Psyche and Psychology: Some Emerging Perspectives, examines the future of psychology in India. For a very long time, intellectual investments in understanding mental life have led to varied formulations about mind and its functions across the word. However, a critical reflection of the state of the disciplinary affairs indicates the dominance of Euro-American theories and methods, which offer an understanding coloured by a Western world view, which fails to do justice with many non-Western cultural settings. The chapters in this volume expand the scope of psychology to encompass indigenous knowledge available in the Indian tradition and invite engaging with emancipatory concerns as well as broadening the disciplinary base. The contributors situate the difference between the Eastern and Western conceptions of the mind in the practice of psychology. They look at this discipline as shaped by and shaping between systems like yoga. They also analyse animal behaviour through the lens of psychology and bring out insights about evolution of individual and social behaviour. This volume offers critique the contemporary psychological practices in India and offers a new perspective called ‘public psychology’ to construe and analyse the relationship between psychologists and their objects of study. Finally, some paradigmatic, pedagogical, and substantive issues are highlighted to restructure the practice of psychology in the Indian setting.

AbstractIn this article we present a new approach to words of the type zigzag, chitchat, etc. in English. Such words form a formal (phonological) and functional (semantic) pattern in English. We argue that this pattern should be analysed in a construction-based approach, which has clear advantages over other approaches, e.g. analyses involving extragrammaticality or a synchronically productive reduplication process. We propose to extend the construction-based approach beyond its original scope (syntactic constructions) to words that may even no longer be morphologically complex. Finally, we make a tentative suggestion about how the difference between productive and unproductive patterns could be captured in the construction-based approach.

AbstractIn social networks, there exist many kinds of groups in which people may have the same interests, hobbies, or political orientation. Sometimes, group decisions are made by simply majority, which means that most of the users in this group reach an agreement, such as US Presidential Elections. A group is called activated if $$\beta$$ β percent of users are influenced in the group. Enterprise will gain income from all influenced groups. Simultaneously, to propagate influence, enterprise needs pay advertisement diffusion cost. Group profit maximization (GPM) problem aims to pick k seeds to maximize the expected profit that considers the benefit of influenced groups with the diffusion cost. GPM is proved to be NP-hard and the objective function is proved to be neither submodular nor supermodular. An upper bound and a lower bound which are difference of two submodular functions are designed. We propose a submodular–modular algorithm (SMA) to solve the difference of two submodular functions and SMA is shown to converge to a local optimal. We present an randomized algorithm based on weighted group coverage maximization for GPM and apply sandwich framework to get theoretical results. Our experiments verify the efficiency of our methods.
