Strain CCUG 50899, a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, motile bacterium isolated from industrial environment in Sweden and tentatively assigned to the species Ochrobactrum anthropi, was studied in order to clarify its taxonomic status. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities placed the strain in the genus Ochrobactrum, sharing highest similarity with the type strains of Ochrobactrum rhizosphaerae (99.3 %), Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans (98.7 %), Ochrobactrum pseudogrignonense (98.6 %) and Ochrobactrum grignonense (98.5 %). The fatty acid profile of [O. anthropi] CCUG 50899 (major fatty acids C18 : 1 ω7c and C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and presence of C18 : 1 2-OH), the polar lipid profile (diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unknown aminolipids and an unknown phospholipid), the presence of the quinone system ubiquinone Q-10 and a polyamine pattern with the major compounds putrescine and spermidine and moderate amounts of sym-homospermidine supported its affiliation to the genus Ochrobactrum. DNA–DNA reassociation experiments with the type strains of its closest relatives O. rhizosphaerae, O. pseudogrignonense, O. thiophenivorans and O. grignonense demonstrated that [O. anthropi] CCUG 50899 should be placed in a novel species, which is distinguishable from related species by a set of biochemical traits. Based on these data, reclassification of [O. anthropi] CCUG 50899 as the type strain of a novel species appears to be justified. Hence, we describe a novel species to accommodate this strain, for which we propose the name Ochrobactrum pituitosum sp. nov. The type strain is CCUG 50899T (=DSM 22207T).

Three bacterial isolates from air samples in Korea, designated strains 6424S-25T, 6515J-31T and 6424S-61T, were characterized using a polyphasic approach. The cells were strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped. Phylogenetic analysis of their 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a clear affiliation with the phylum Bacteroidetes. Strains 6424S-25T and 6515J-31T showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 92.7–94.8 % to type strains of recognized species of the genus Adhaeribacter and strain 6424S-61T was closely related to Segetibacter koreensis Gsoil 664T (93.9 % similarity). The G+C contents of the DNA of strains 6424S-25T, 6515J-31T and 6424S-61T were 44.5, 43.9 and 38.4 mol%, respectively. Major fatty acids of strains 6424S-25T and 6515J-31T were summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B), iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω5c. The fatty acid content of strain 6424S-61T mainly comprised iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C15 : 0. Comparative analysis of phenotypic and phylogenetic traits indicated that strains 6424S-25T and 6515J-31T represented two novel species of the genus Adhaeribacter and that strain 6424S-61T should be considered as a novel species of the genus Segetibacter. The names Adhaeribacter aerophilus sp. nov. (type strain 6424S-25T =KACC 14118T =NBRC 106134T), Adhaeribacter aerolatus sp. nov. (type strain 6515J-31T =KACC 14117T =NBRC 106133T) and Segetibacter aerophilus sp. nov. (type strain 6424S-61T =KACC 14119T =NBRC 106135T) are proposed for these organisms.

A Gram-negative, pleomorphic, aerobic, haloalkaliphilic archaeon, strain 167-74T, was isolated from commercial rock salt imported into Japan from China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities showed that strain 167-74T is closely related to Halostagnicola larsenii XH-48T (98.3 %) and Halostagnicola kamekurae 194-10T (97.2 %). The major polar lipids of the isolate were C20C20 and C20C25 derivatives of phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester. A glycolipid was not detected, in contrast to the two existing, neutrophilic species of the genus Halostagnicola. The DNA G+C content of strain 167-74T was 60.7 mol%. and it gave DNA–DNA reassociation values of 19.5 and 18.8 %, respectively, with Hst. larsenii JCM 13463T and Hst. kamekurae 194-10T. Therefore, strain 167-74T represents a novel species, for which the name Halostagnicola alkaliphila sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain 167-74T ( = JCM 16592T  = CECT 7631T).

In the early 1980s, a facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, short rod, designated 202T, was isolated from a chicken crop and identified as a homofermentative lactic acid bacterium. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain was affiliated with the genus Lactobacillus, clustering within the Lactobacillus acidophilus–delbrueckii group. In this analysis, strain 202T appeared to be most closely related to the type strains of Lactobacillus intestinalis and Lactobacillus amylolyticus, with gene sequence similarities of 96.1 and 96.2 %, respectively. Strain 202T was found to differ from these two species, however, when investigated by multilocus sequence analysis, and it also differed in terms of some of its metabolic properties. On the basis of these observations, strain 202T is considered to represent a novel species in the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus gigeriorum sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 202T ( = CRBIP 24.85T = DSM 23908T).

An extremely haloalkaliphilic archaeon, strain AD2T, was isolated from Aiding salt lake in Xin-Jiang, China. Strain AD2T required at least 12 % NaCl for growth. MgCl2 was not required. The isolate was able to grow over a pH range of 8.0–10.0 and temperature range of 20–55 °C, with optimal growth at pH 8.7–9.2 and 44–47 °C. The major polar lipids of strain AD2T were phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester; glycolipids were not detected. Analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain AD2T was phylogenetically related to members of the genus Natronorubrum, with sequence similarities to the type strains of Natronorubrum bangense, Natronorubrum tibetense and Natronorubrum aibiense of 97.1, 95.9 and 96.1 %, respectively. The G+C content of its DNA was 60.9 mol% (T m). Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain AD2T and the type strains of Nrr. bangense, Nrr. tibetense and Nrr. aibiense were 49, 38 and 41 %, respectively. It was concluded that strain AD2T represents a novel species of the genus Natronorubrum, for which the name Natronorubrum sulfidifaciens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AD2T (=CGMCC 1.6307T=JCM 14089T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated, non-gliding and rod-shaped bacterial strain, SSK2-2T, was isolated from the place where the ocean and a freshwater spring meet at Jeju island, South Korea. Strain SSK2-2T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 2.0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. The neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SSK2-2T fell within the clade comprising the type strains of species of the genus Maribacter, joining the type strain of Maribacter sedimenticola with which it shared 99.4 % similarity. Sequence similarities to the type strains of other Maribacter species were 94.6–98.2 %. Strain SSK2-2T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16 : 0) as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain SSK2-2T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain SSK2-2T was 38.2 mol% and mean levels of DNA–DNA relatedness with the type strains of four phylogenetically related species of the genus Maribacter were 11–24 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain SSK2-2T is separate from other Maribacter species. On the basis of the data presented, strain SSK2-2T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacter confluentis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SSK2-2T ( = KCTC 42604T = CECT 8869T).

Three Gram-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria (strains CB40, CB41 and CB42T) were isolated from human faeces. Based on phylogenetic analysis and specific phenotypic characteristics, these strains were included in the genus Bacteroides, and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that these strains represented a novel species. The strains were most closely related to the type strains of Bacteroides barnesiae and Bacteroides salanitronis, with sequence similarities of 93.4 and 89.8 %, respectively. The G+C content of strain CB42T is 44.7 mol%. Major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and C18 : 1 ω9c. On the basis of the data presented, a novel Bacteroides species, Bacteroides coprophilus sp. nov., is proposed, with CB42T (=JCM 13818T=DSM 18228T) as the type strain.

A Gram-reaction-negative, yellow-pigmented, gliding, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium (RA5-111T) was isolated from foreshore soil. The taxonomic status of the novel isolate was determined using a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, strain RA5-111T could be assigned to the genus Gramella, with sequence similarities of 97.7, 97.3 and 96.2 % to the type strains of Gramella echinicola, Gramella portivictoriae and Gramella marina, respectively. Chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics also supported the affiliation of strain RA5-111T with the genus Gramella. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39.1 mol%. The isolate contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and a summed feature (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) as major fatty acids, and phosphatidylethanolamine and unknown phospholipids as the polar lipids. DNA–DNA relatedness, phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic data clearly indicate that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Gramella, for which the name Gramella gaetbulicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RA5-111T ( = KCTC 23022T  = JCM 16528T  = NBRC 106272T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium (CC-JY-1T) was isolated on nutrient agar from a soil sample collected from an oil-contaminated site located in Chyai county, Taiwan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated that this isolate is unique, showing 96.7 % sequence similarity to the type strain of Arenimonas donghaensis and similarities of 93.0–93.8 % to species of the genera Thermomonas, Lysobacter and Silanimonas. The presence of ubiquinone Q-8, a polar lipid profile consisting of the major compounds diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine and the fatty acid profile were in accordance with the phylogenetic affiliation of CC-JY-1T. DNA–DNA reassociation experiments between CC-JY-1T and A. donghaensis KACC 11381T resulted in a mean relatedness value of 32 %, indicating that strain CC-JY1T represents a novel species in the genus Arenimonas, for which we propose the name Arenimonas malthae sp. nov. The type strain is CC-JY-1T (=CCUG 53596T =CIP 109310T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, designated BZ42T, was isolated from the soil of an industrial site. Strain BZ42T was able to grow at 5–25 °C. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (46.2 %), C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH (23.2 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (9.1 %). The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The genomic DNA G+C content was 36.5 mol% (HPLC). 16S rRNA gene sequence phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain BZ42T was a member of the genus Pedobacter, family Sphingobacteriaceae, and 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain BZ42T and the type strains of species of the genus Pedobacter with validly published names were 90.4–93.2 %. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain BZ42T was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter bauzanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ42T (=DSM 22554T =CGMCC 1.10187T =CIP 110134T).

Bacterial strain TM-1T was isolated from the gut of a wood-feeding termite, Reticulitermes chinensis Snyder. Cells of strain TM-1T were Gram-negative, spherical (1.0–2.0 µm in diameter), non-motile, non-sporulating and red-pigmented. Strain TM-1T was resistant to UV radiation, showing 34 % survival after exposure to UV light at a dose of 100 J m−2. Growth occurred at 20–40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 6.0–7.0), and in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0–0.4 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TM-1T was related to members of the genus Deinococcus, with sequence similarities ranging from 87.0 to 94.0 %. The peptidoglycan of strain TM-1T contained ornithine, alanine, glycine and glutamic acid. The most abundant cellular fatty acids of strain TM-1T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 22.3 %) and C16 : 0 (37.5 %). MK-8 was the predominant quinone. The polar lipid profile contained three glycophospholipids, six glycolipids, one aminolipid and three unknown lipids. DNA of the type strain had a G+C content of 65.6 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data presented, strain TM-1T represents a novel species of the genus Deinococcus, for which the name Deinococcus reticulitermitis sp. nov. is proposed, with TM-1T ( = CGMCC 1.10218T = NBRC 106334T) as the type strain.
