Aim: Different fruit colours are associated with dispersal by different frugivores, largely based on colour vision type. Frugivore mobility affects overall range size for the plant being dispersed. Here we determine the interaction between different fruit colours, range sizes, and diversification rates by testing two hypotheses: That (1) fruit colours attractive to birds have larger range sizes due to their higher dispersal ability, and that (2) different frugivore disperser groups, bird or mammal, leads to different diversification rate at different range size, where intermediate range size leads to the highest diversification rate. Location: Global. Time period: Contemporary (or present). Major taxa studied: Palms (Arecaceae). Methods: Using model selection, we identified three groups of colours with similar diversification rate and likely disperser. Range sizes were estimated and categorized species as small, intermediate, or large-ranged. For model selection and to determine the relationship beween fruit color, range size and diversification rate we used Multi-State Speciation and Extinction (MuSSE) models. Results: Species with intermediate range size had the highest net diversification for all three fruit colour groups. Bird-dispersed palms more likely diversified at small than at large range size while mammal-dispersed palms more likely diversified at larger range size than small. Fruit colours associated with mammal dispersal had more large-ranged species than colours associated with bird dispersal. Main conclusions: The associated between intermediate range size and higher diversification rate indicates that spatial factors that affect diversification at small and large range sizes result in higher diversification at intermediate ranges. We find striking differences in diversification rate within each range size category between fruit color groups. This suggests that the relationship between diversification rate and range size depends on the specific frugivorous dispersers and their dispersal patterns. This study reveals how fruit traits alter dispersal patterns and how that, in turn, influences diversification.

Different models of speciation predict contrasting patterns in the relationship between the dispersal ability of lineages and their diversification rates. This relationship is expected to be negative in isolation-limited models and positive in founder-event models. In addition, the combination of negative and positive effects of dispersal on speciation can result in higher diversification rates at intermediate levels of dispersal ability. Using molecular phylogenies to estimate diversification rates, and wing morphology to estimate dispersal ability, we analysed the influence of dispersal on diversification in the avifauna of Australasian archipelagoes. Contrary to expectations given the fragmented nature of island systems, the relationship between dispersal ability and diversification rate was monotonically negative. While multiple mechanisms could generate this pattern, they all share a phase of range expansion that is decoupled from speciation.

Abstract Geographic range size and abundance are important determinants of extinction risk in fossil and extant taxa. However, the relationship between these variables and extinction risk has not been tested extensively during evolutionarily “quiescent” times of low extinction and speciation in the fossil record. Here we examine the influence of geographic range size and abundance on extinction risk during the late Paleozoic (Mississippian–Permian), a time of “sluggish” evolution when global rates of origination and extinction were roughly half those of other Paleozoic intervals. Analyses used spatiotemporal occurrences for 164 brachiopod species from the North American midcontinent. We found abundance to be a better predictor of extinction risk than measures of geographic range size. Moreover, species exhibited reductions in abundance before their extinction but did not display contractions in geographic range size. The weak relationship between geographic range size and extinction in this time and place may reflect the relative preponderance of larger-ranged taxa combined with the physiographic conditions of the region that allowed for easy habitat tracking that dampened both extinction and speciation. These conditions led to a prolonged period (19–25 Myr) during which standard macroevolutionary rules did not apply.

AbstractHypothenemus hampei is one of the main causes of the decrease in production and quality of coffee. The fenomena of this damage can be indicted by dwarfing fruit color changing to a reddish yellow, and finally the fall resulted in a decrease in the quantity and quality of production. This production loss was affected by the attack level of coffe pest. Symptoms of coffe pest attack (PBKo) can be identicated by its attacting form where PBKo can destroy both the unripe and ripe coffe. This research aims to know the relationship attacks Percentage the production loss due to the pest attack. Hypothenemus hampei Ferr. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) in Betara subdistrict of Tanjung Jabung Barat regency. This research has been conducted in July–August 2016. This research using survey method with linear regression analysis i.e. regression between the percentage of attacks and the percentage of production loss. The attack percentage of PBKo pests in the Parit Panglong Betara village range between 8.20 – 17.76%. The percentage highest production loss results on red skin color coffee 7.11% and low on coffee colored skin green beans 3.95%. The percentage of PBKo pest attack had not showed a very strong relationship with the level of production loss. Keywords: Hypothenemus hampei, coffee AbstrakHypothenemus hampei merupakan salah satu penyebab utama penurunan produksi dan mutu kopi. Kerusakan yang ditimbulkannya berupa buah menjadi tidak berkembang, berubah warna menjadi kuning kemerahan dan akhirnya gugur mengakibatkan penurunan jumlah dan mutu hasil. Kehilangan hasil dipengaruhi oleh tingkat serangan hama penggerek buah kopi. Gejala serangan hama penggerek buah kopi (PBKo) dapat diketahui dari bentuk  serangan dimana PBKo dapat menggerek buah kopi yang masih muda sampai dengan yang masak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan Persentase serangan dengan dugaan kehilangan hasil akibat serangan hama penggerek buah kopi Hypothenemus hampei Ferr.(Coleoptera:Scolytidae) di Kecamatan Betara Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Barat. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan Juli–Agustus 2016. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode survei dengan analisis regresi linier yaitu regresi antara persentase serangan dengan persentase kehilangan hasil. Persentase serangan hama PBKo di Desa Parit Panglong Betara berkisar antara 8,20 – 17,76 %. Persentase kehilangan hasil yang tertinggi didapatkan pada kopi yang warna kulit merah 7,11 % dan terendah pada kopi  yang berwarna kulit biji hijau 3,95 %.  Persentase serangan hama PBKo tidak memperlihatkan hubungan yang kuat dengan tingkat kehilangan hasil Kata kunci : Hypothenemus hampei, kopi


Several experiments were devised to find out whether it is possible to measure the internal shearing stresses in a compressed disc, and the conditions under which it is possible to do so. Equations are developed for analysing shear stresses parallel to planes of slip and distortion due to double and single slipping. The relationship between shear stress and amount of shear is found for tensile and for compression specimens, when slipping is confined to one plane. The experimental results in the two cases are identical. The fact that the component of force normal to plane of slip is a pressure in one case and a tension in the other makes no measurable difference to resistance to slipping for given amount of slip. During double slipping resistance to shear increases more rapidly for a given total amount of slipping than when all slip is confined to one plane. The experiments cover a large range and show that resistance to shear goes on increasing up to greatest amounts of distortion used.

Abstract What determines the level of genetic diversity of a species remains one of the enduring problems of population genetics. Because neutral diversity depends upon the product of the effective population size and mutation rate, there is an expectation that diversity should be correlated to measures of census population size. This correlation is often observed for nuclear but not for mitochondrial DNA. Here, we revisit the question of whether mitochondrial DNA sequence diversity is correlated to census population size by compiling the largest data set to date, using 639 mammalian species. In a multiple regression, we find that nucleotide diversity is significantly correlated to both range size and mass-specific metabolic rate, but not a variety of other factors. We also find that a measure of the effective population size, the ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous diversity, is also significantly negatively correlated to both range size and mass-specific metabolic rate. These results together suggest that species with larger ranges have larger effective population sizes. The slope of the relationship between diversity and range is such that doubling the range increases diversity by 12–20%, providing one of the first quantifications of the relationship between diversity and the census population size.

Abstract Many studies have been done on the relationship between variation in morphology, dispersal ability and degree of dormancy of heterocarpic species with dimorphic diaspores. However, there are far fewer such studies on species that produce trimorphic diaspores. Our aim was to compare dormancy and germination of achenes from peripheral, intermediate and central positions in the capitulum of the diaspore-trimorphic cold desert annual Asteraceae species Heteracia szovitsii, an important component of plant communities in the cold deserts of NW China. Dormancy breaking/germination responses of the three achene morphs and of seeds isolated from the pericarp were tested in the laboratory using standard procedures, and seedling emergence phenology of the achene morphs was monitored under natural cold desert temperature conditions in an experimental garden with and without supplemental watering. Depth of dormancy of the three achene morphs was peripheral > intermediate > central. Seedlings from the three morphs emerged in spring and in autumn. Cumulative seedling emergence percentage from achenes during 47 months of burial was central > intermediate > peripheral. Central achene morphs emerged over a period of ~12 months after sowing, while intermediate and peripheral achene morphs did so for ~40 and 47 months, respectively. Thus, H. szovitsii exhibits a temporal dispersal strategy. No viable central or intermediate achene morphs were present after 16 and 40 months, respectively, but ~60 % of the non-emerged peripheral achenes morphs were viable after 47 months. Based on our results on diaspore dormancy and those of a previous study of diaspore spatial dispersal of H. szovitsii, we conclude that this species has a high–intermediate–low risk diaspore dispersal/dormancy strategy that likely increases the chances for population persistence over time and space.
