A unique characteristic of many naturally cemented sensitive soils is that they are made up of finely ground fresh rock debris, "rock flour", much of which is very susceptable to chemical weathering or decomposition. Many of these minerals can be identified by X-ray diffraction. The decomposition of these minerals produces secondary products which can act as effective natural cements. A process is outlined whereby the sequence of deposition, weathering and cementation can account for the observed mechanical behaviour of naturally cemented soils.

Six-ring Rock is widely used as containers of water and additives to produce health care products. In this paper, the composition and microstructure of Six-ring Rock have been investigated by using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and other technologies. Results show that Six-ring Rock is composed of CaMg(CO3)2, SiO2 and KAlSi3O8. Fe atoms exist in CaMg(CO3)2 by replacing Mg atoms. Six-ring Rock shows nano-size lamellar and acerose microstructures on the surface, and nano-size monocrystals in the body. Six-ring Rock is a natural nano structure mineral.

The influence of sterilization with γ-irradiation in the properties of plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings used for medical implants is investigated in this work. HAp coatings were applied on titanium alloy substrates by plasma spraying and then submitted to 1 and 10 cycles of sterilization with γ-irradiation. As-applied HAp coatings were used as control samples. Afterwards, the modifications on the samples, induced by the irradiation process, were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Water contact angle measurements as well as adhesion tests were also carried out in order to evaluate the influence of the irradiation process on the wettability and mechanical behaviour of the HAp coatings. No microstructural modifications were detected by X-ray diffraction after sterilization. However, the results show that sterilization with γ-irradiation originates modifications of the surface of HAp, as detected by a change of color of the coatings and by the XPS analysis. Nevertheless, these modifications do not result in significant changes in the wettability and mechanical behaviour of the HAp coatings.

AbstractIn this study, we tried to characterize a kind of low crystallinity carbon materials. The structure of polyparaphenylene(PPP)-based carbon was analyzed by means of high energy X-ray diffraction using the apparatus of SPring-8. The experimental results revealed the existence of basic structural units (BSU) in the highly disordered materials like PPP-based carbon. It is thought that the PPP-based carbons consist of small turbostratic particles, which have a few piled up poly-aromatic layers. The structure of the PPP-based carbon which seemed to be amorphous was estimated to have hexagonal carbon layers with the size of up to 1 nm. The pores in the PPP-based carbon seem to be clearances formed among the BSUs and amorphous carbon. The pore size of PPP-based carbon was estimated from the result of N2 absorption measurement. The experimental results suggested that the lithium ion charge mechanism in the PPP-based carbon differs from that in graphite.

This work is focusing on exploring preparing processes to tailor the microstructure of carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced silicon nitride-based ceramic composites. Samples with different porosity’s and different amount (1, 3 or 5 wt%) of carbon nanotubes have been prepared by using gas pressure sintering or hot isostatic pressing. In comparison, composites with 1wt%, 5wt% or 10wt% carbon black and graphite have been manufactured. We measured the room temperature mechanical and electrical properties, examined the micro and nano structure by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. It was found that it is possible to develop CNT-silicon nitride composite for applications where a decent electric conductivity and good mechanical properties are required.

Nanostructural cupric oxide (CuO) films were prepared on Si and glass substrate by pulsed laser deposition technique (PLD) using laser Nd:YAG, using different laser pulses energies from 200 to 600 mJ. The X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) of the films showed a polycrystalline structure with a monoclinic symmetry and preferred orientation toward (111) plane with nano structure. The crystallite size was increasing with increasing of laser pulse energy. Optical properties was characterized by using UV–vis spectrometer in the wave lengthrange (200-1100) nm at room temperature. The results showed that the transmission spectrum decreases with the laser pulses energy increase. Sensitivity of NO2 gas at different operating temperatures, (50°C, 100°C, 150°C and 200°C) was calculated.

The mechanism of plastic deformation in crystals of a trifluoromethylated benzamide derivative has been determined with micro-focused X-ray diffraction. Fuorine–fluorine interactions are propose to mediated the observed mechanical behaviour.
