Purpose Extending the theory of planned behaviour and the perspective of available resources, the purpose of this study is to expatiate the influence behavioural antecedents of available resources on electrical installation and maintenance work students’ (EIMW) entrepreneurial intentions (EIs) in technical colleges. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted a multistage sampling technique to select samples for the study. Data collected were analyzed using structural equation models in the empirical analysis. Findings The study showed that attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and perceived efficacy are behavioural antecedents that can be manipulated by exogenous factors to enhance EIMW students’ EIs. Originality/value This study stirs the government and other education agencies on the need to strengthen the technical institutions through adequate funding, employment of skilled personnel and provision of up-to-date types of machinery and equipment to help the students to compete globally. Therefore, adequate application of available resources will foster positive behaviours of EIMW students towards establishing their business venture.

Many graduates of Technical Colleges do not have intention to establish and run their own businesses which has caused a spike in the increase of unemployed persons in the society. Venturing into business may not necessarily solve these problems of unemployment but venturing into the right business with the right skill. To reduce the problems of unemployment EIMW students should have a desire to start a business enterprise for the purpose of making a profit. To achieve the purpose of the study, six hypotheses were formulated. Two hundred EIMW students were selected as sample using the multistage sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed using correlation and regression analysis. The result of the study showed that independent variables have significant influence on the dependent variable, thereby, the null hypotheses were rejected. It was concluded that available resources and laboratory/workshop practices have significant influence on the electrical installation and maintenance work students’ entrepreneurial intentions. The result of this study will help to change the societal misconceptions about technical education entrepreneurs.

Purpose Based on the theory of planned behaviour and the resource-based perspective, the purpose of this paper is to provide a well-supported explanation of how access to resources, defined as those controlled by the family context and not necessarily controlled by the student, changes attitudes, subjective norms and perceived control and, consequently, the entrepreneurial intentions of secondary students. Design/methodology/approach In contrast to traditional research methodologies, this study used a different approach based on primary survey data collected from secondary students to study future entrepreneurial intentions. Structural equation models were used in the empirical analysis. Findings Secondary students with more access to resources – financial and human capital – have stronger entrepreneurial intentions because they have more favourable attitudes and subjective norms, and greater perceived behavioural control. This study finds that cultural capital has no significant impact on entrepreneurial intention. Practical implications Key policy actions should increase access to resources for young people. Originality/value This study shows that the effect of access to resources on entrepreneurial intention is mediated by attitudes, social norms and perceived behavioural control. The results suggest that the relationship between access to resources and entrepreneurial intentions is more complex and nuanced than previously thought.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to extend the attitudinal approach to entrepreneurial intentions by using a structural analysis to explore overlooked personal values as the antecedents of entrepreneurial attitude. Based on the widely adopted value system proposed by Schwartz, this study argues that while one cluster of personal values is positively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude that leads to entrepreneurial intention, another cluster of personal values is negatively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude. Design/methodology/approach – Questionnaire responses obtained from a sample of 276 MBA were analyzed using structural equation models to examine the influences of values on entrepreneurial intentions via entrepreneurial attitude. Findings – The results of this study demonstrate that personal values of self-direction, stimulation, achievement, and universalism are all positively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude, which together constitute a comfort zone for entrepreneurship, whereas values in the opposite end of the circumplex including benevolence, tradition, conformity, security, and power are negatively correlated with entrepreneurial attitude. The values that discourage the formation of an entrepreneurial attitude also counter the positive effect of entrepreneurial attitude on intention, making the relationship between entrepreneurial attitude and intention contingent upon value conflicts. Originality/value – This study regards entrepreneurship as a career development and contributes to the entrepreneurship study by differentiating the influences of a vital construct, i.e., personal values, which should not be regarded as a universalism. The value circumplex with a comfort and discomfort zone developed by this study can serve as a platform to help build the view on entrepreneurial intentions in terms of personal values.

Purpose The purpose of the study is to probe the influence of individual social entrepreneurship orientations (ISEO) and SE education (SEE) which could affect social entrepreneurial intentions (SEI) among students. Design/methodology/approach The data were gathered from 241 entrepreneurship discipline university students. The data were analyzed with structural equation modeling. Findings Findings suggest that ISEO plays a vital role in stimulating SEI; moreover, SEE further moderates ISEO and SEI's relationship among students. Practical implications Based on the results, academia should focus on SEE and the government should devise policies to encourage social entrepreneurial ventures to aid in social problems solution. Originality/value This study validates the relationship of different factors (orientations and intentions) of the theory of planned behavior in the SE domain and confirms the significance of SEE.

AbstractWith a theory of planned behaviour (TPB) framework, this study examined how the link between resources and behavioural factors influence the entrepreneurial intentions of electrical installation and maintenance work (EIMW) students. It showed how available resources, which are defined as those controlled by the technical institutions but are accessible by the students, influence their behaviour and consequently their entrepreneurial intention. Different approaches are used in the study to analyse the primary data collected from EIMW students and an empirical analysis was done using structural equation model. The study showed the robustness of TPB model in the face of available resource that attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control are behavioural factors that can be positively influence by several exogenous factors to enhance EIMW students’ entrepreneurial intentions. The results of the study enhance the institutional training of staff and instructors at all management to give career counselling services and be vast in the career opportunities available in the field of study. This skill will motivate EIMW students towards establishing their business venture.

Keywords

Perilaku kewirausahaan; Kinerja usaha; Petani anggrek; Structural equation models (SEM)

Abstract

The performance of Indonesian orchid industry is still low due to the lack of farmers competencies. The improvement of entrepreneurial behavior of orchid farmers could hopely increase the orchid bussiness performance. The study of farmers entrepreneurial behaviour was conducted to analyse the influence of internal and external factors on entrepreneurial behavior, and to analyse the influence of entrepreneurial behavior on bussiness performance. This research used 115 data of orchid farmers. The data were analized by SEM using Lisrel 8.3 programs. The results of testing with SEM showed that internal factors, including increasing the scale of business, entrepreneurial intentions, achievement motivation and high perceptions of business, can enhance entrepreneurial behavior. External factors, which consist of input material, counseling, capital assistance, promotion, regulation, compactness among orchid growers, and access to information have a significant negative effect. Entrepreneurial behavior has a significant and positive effect on business performance, meaning that perseverance, responsiveness to business opportunities, innovation, courage to take risks and independence in running orchid farming play an important role in improving business performance. To improve the entrepreneurial behavior of orchid farmers the government needs to provide support in facilities that are in accordance with farmers need, such as training for propagation by tissue culture, technology to shorten the maintenance period, market development to shorten the marketing chain, and provision of quality seeds according with consumer preferences.

Purpose Betting games have become a global industry worth billions of dollars providing employment to millions and contributing to the gross domestic product (GDP) of several countries. While there are debates and controversies surrounding betting games discourse, a growing body of literature shows that it has been exacerbated by growing unemployment rates. This paper aims to examine the nexus between the increasing involvement of youth in betting games and unemployment from the Nigerian perspective. Design/methodology/approach The study adopts simple random and stratified sampling techniques to select participants for the study. Three hypotheses were tested for this study and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation model (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. Findings The three hypotheses tested in this study were coined from previous literature. The study established a direct link between technology advancement, promises of winning big coupled with bonuses while unemployment was not significant to youth involvement in betting games. The study also showed that playing betting games provides another source of income to the youth, who are already engaged in one form of work or another. Finally, youth involvement in betting games has created awareness regarding different sports in the world, while contributing to Nigeria’s economy. Practical implications As betting games centre as a business in Nigeria has contributed substantially and positively to unemployment in Nigeria; the Government of Nigeria are encouraged to streamline and regulate the activities of the sector such that they can contribute significantly to the country GDP and provide employment opportunities to the youths. Originality/value The research shows that the reason why betting games have a massive turnaround of youths in Nigeria is not majorly because of unemployment but as another means to a substantial financial individual/family income. Thus, Nigerian youths see betting games as an avenue to make more money. The study is the first of its kind to examine the nexus between betting games, technology and unemployment hence, its contribution to knowledge.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to seek a better understanding of the role of volition in the learning transfer system beyond the well-established concept of motivation to transfer. Design/methodology/approach Participants of a two-day leadership training were asked to complete two online questionnaires (t1 directly after training, t2 eight weeks after training). In total, 891 managers answered the first questionnaire, 465 the second. Findings Confirmatory factor analysis suggests that motivation and volition to transfer are perceived as two different constructs. Hierarchical linear regression shows that additional variance in training transfer can be explained when volition to transfer is taken into account. Structural equation models and bootstrap analysis suggest that both motivation and volition to transfer mediate effects of supervisor support and trainer performance on training transfer. Research limitations/implications The results imply that besides motivation to transfer, volition to transfer may be a relevant construct in the transfer of training. It remains to be tested how far these findings can be generalized to other training settings beside leadership trainings. Practical implications Organizations aiming at improving training transfer should focus on enhancing the participants’ motivation and volition to transfer. Both trainers and supervisors seem to promote transfer of training by influencing a trainee’s motivation to transfer and volition to transfer. Originality/value To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to systematically examine the role of volition in training transfer.
