Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the influencing factors of cost performance of design-bid-build (DBB) and design-build (DB) projects and comparing the differences of influencing factors between these two delivery methods. Design/methodology/approach This research identified and refined 14 influencing factors through literature review and academic expert discussions. Questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data about the influencing factors and project cost performance. Then those factors were reduced to four components by factor analysis. Logistic regression analysis is used to investigate the relationship between four principal components and project cost performance. Findings The results indicate that the significant influencing factors of project cost performance of DBB projects and DB projects are different. For DBB projects, owner abilities, such as owner team ability, owner experience, and owner finance, are important influencing factors causing cost overruns, while for DB projects cost performance is more sensitive to the contractor abilities, namely, contractor team ability, contractor finance, contractor experience, etc. Research limitations/implications The results of the paper are mainly derived by quantitative research method based on the survey of 144 samples, so the results may need validation by qualitative studies. Further research could apply case study or interview to validate the findings in this research. In addition, project type and location are not considered as control variables due to the limited number of samples, future research could be conducted to investigate their relationship with project performance. Practical implications The findings of this research not only help practitioners have a better understanding of the factors influencing project cost performance, but also provide some guidelines for practitioners to pay attention to different factors to better control the cost performance within different delivery systems. Originality/value Owner ability and contractor ability are found to be of different importance in influencing cost performance of DBB and DB projects. This research extends previous research on cost management by considering different significant factors in influencing project cost performance within DBB and DB projects.

AbstractAdopting quantitative corpus-based methods, this paper focuses on the alternative negative constructions in Korean, [anV] and [Vanhda]. Logistic regression analyses for a mixed-effects model were carried out on data drawn from the Sejong Korean Corpus. Certain features of the verb or adjective in negative constructions significantly affect the use of the two negative constructions. A relevant factor is register/medium (spoken or written), among other significant interactions of factors. Furthermore, the fact that frequency is consistent with other relevant factors, together with certain diachronic facts of Korean, supports the claim that frequency of use plays an important role in linguistic changes. Another finding is that, notwithstanding noticeable differences between spoken and written language, the factors influencing the use of the two negative constructions in Korean are largely similar in the spoken and written registers.

PurposeCitizen trust in police is important in terms of citizen consent to government policies and of police achieving their organizational goals. In the previous study, improvements in police policy, organizational operation and policing activities were developed to clarify which factors influence trust in police and how trust can be improved. This research raises the question, would changes in trust in police have an impact on trust in government? In this paper, this research question is discussed theoretically and the causal relationship analyzed empirically by applying OLS, ordered logistic, 2SLS and logistic regressions.Design/methodology/approachThe basic analysis methods are to apply the OLS and the ordered logistic regression. OLS regression analysis is an analytical method that minimizes an error range of a regression line. The assumptions for OLS are: linearity, independence, equilibrium, extrapolation and multicollinearity issues. These problems were statistically verified and analyzed, in order to confirm the robustness of the analysis results by comparing the results of the ordered logistic regression because of the sequence characteristic of the dependent variable. The data to be used in this study is the Asia Barometer Survey in 2013.FindingsTrust in police and citizen perception of safety are analyzed as important factors to increase trust in the government. The effects of trust in police are more significant than the effects of control variables, and the direction and strength of the results are stable. The effect of trust in police on trust in government is strengthened by the perception of safety (IV). In addition, OLS, ordered logistic regression analysis, which analyzed trust in central government and local government, and logistic regression analysis categorized by trust and distrust show the stability.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper has implications in terms of theoretical and empirical analysis of the relationship between trust in police and trust in government. In addition, the impact of perception of safety on trust in police can be provided to police officers, policymakers and governors who are seeking to increase trust in government. This paper is also meaningful in that it is the microscopic research based on the citizens' survey. One of the limitations of macroscopic research is that it does not consider the individual perceptions of citizens.Practical implicationsThe results of this paper can confirm the relationship of the virtuous cycle, which is perception of safety – trust in police – trust in government. The police will need to provide security services to improve citizens' perception of safety and make great efforts to create safer communities and society. Trust in police formed through this process can be an important component of trust in government. By making citizens feel safer and achieving trust in police, ultimately, trust in government will be improved.Originality/valueThe police perform one of the essential roles of government and are one of the major components of trust in government, but the police sector has been neglected compared to the roles of the economic and political sectors. These influences of macro factors are too abstract to allow specific policy directions to be suggested. If we consider trust in police, and factors that can improve trust in government, we can suggest practical policy alternatives.

PurposeWhile privatisation in education is expanding, the number of children transferring from public to private schools seeking high-quality education has increased. This study examined equality of educational opportunity, focussing on the attributes of individual children and their familial backgrounds. The target country is Nepal, which has been facing an educational disparity problem between public and private schools.Design/methodology/approachThis study performed a logistic regression analysis with the objective variable as the binary capability to attend a private school and analysed the differences between children who attended public versus private schools. Semi-structured interviews with subjects and teachers and home-visit surveys were conducted to collect and confirm data.FindingsThis study revealed that particular children were excluded from seeking high-quality education in form of attending private schools. These children's characteristics correspond to lower economic status, illiterate mothers, being only children and female. Moreover, the study observed changes in awareness due to the modernisation and globalisation of Nepali society and growing enthusiasm for education, amongst others.Originality/valueResearch on privatisation and access to quality education, which has attracted scholarly attention in recent years, requires a broader scope regarding target countries and more in-depth analyses. This study focussed on Nepal since, in the country, the phenomenon of children leaving public for private schools is prominent and little research has been conducted on this context. Additionally, since the study gathered extensive data on individual children and did not rely on secondary data, it was possible to perform an in-depth analysis and accurately portray the real situation faced by Nepali children.

Abstract Background: Inflammatory cells play an important role in the occurrence and development of cancer. In recent years, the value of inflammatory cell count and its ratio in the diagnosis of prostate cancer has been controversial. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 475 patients with transrectal prostate puncture with TPSA>4 ng/ml in the Third Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University. Univariate analysis, multivariate analysis and Receiver Operating Characteristics curve analysis were performed to analysis the factor of age, TPSA, FPSA, PV, NC, LC, PC, NLR, PLR in the diagnosis value of prostate cancer, and further analysis the value of inflammatory cell count and its ratio in different TPSA groups of prostate cancer (4 ng/ml <TPSA ≤ 10 ng/ml, 10 ng/ml <TPSA ≤ 20 ng/ml, TPSA > 20 ng/ml). Results: The results of Univariate analysis in the overall data showed that Age, TPSA, PV, NC, PLC were influencing factors in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) of NC was 56.2% with a sensitivity of 72.2% and specificity of 41.5% in the cut -off point of 4.52 (p = 0.021). The PLC cut-off point of 205.5 gives 55.6% AUC with 67.2% sensitivity and 4.2% specificity. Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis results showed that Age, TPSA, PV, NC were independent influencing factors for the diagnosis of prostate cancer; In different TPSA group studies, it was found that NC, NLR, and PLR were valuable for the diagnosis of prostate cancer when TPSA>20 ng/ml,at the NC cut-off point of 4.52 with 67.3% AUC, 71.2% sensitivity and 62.5% specificity(p<0.001), at the NLR cut-off point of 3.14 with 65.4% AUC, 67.2% sensitivity and 61.1% specificity (p<0.001), and at the PLR cut-off point of 135.8 with 62.8% AUC , 57.6% sensitivity and 66.7% specificity (p<0.001). Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis results showed that when TPSA>20 ng/ml, the higher Age, TPSA , Low PV and NC are independent risk factors affecting the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Conclusion: NC has promising value in predicting prostate cancer, especially when TPSA>20 ng/ml. A further prospective study in validating its diagnostic value was needed.
