Purpose This study aims to identify the key contributing factors of knowledge management (KM) practices with respect to an employee benefit. The research is designed to gain insight into the KM practices of Indian information technology (IT) firms and evaluate its effects on employee perceived benefit (EPB) and employee satisfaction (ES). Design/methodology/approach This study focuses on the cause and effect relationship between the variables. In this research study, a structured questionnaire is administered and accumulated responses from executives, software developers and knowledge managers from five IT firms with the help of google form. The sample size was 339 for this study. Confirmatory factor analysis and partial least square (PLS)-structural equation modeling have been used to analyze the data with the help of SMART-PLS software. Findings The well-fitted model describes the importance of KM practices with respect to increasing employee benefit and satisfaction. The hypothesized model is empirically investigated and it is also supported by the analysis. The KM practices have significant effects on EPBs. Employee benefits have a significant effect on ES. The result shows that the benefits of KM practices are more intended toward the sources of motivation where they can increase their capability with the help of KM practices. Research limitations/implications Benefit leads to the motivation and satisfaction of employees. The work itself can be a highly motivating dimension with the help of proper KM practices. The managers’ prime responsibility is to focus on collaborative work with regularizing the exchange of knowledge, where new knowledge can be created and, do better for the organization. Originality/value This research study offers a new direction of motivation to work. The employee can be highly motivated if he can be benefited from the work itself. This study gives an approach to satisfy the employee with the help of KM practices. Perceived benefit is considered as an essential element for this study.

PurposeDrawing upon the institutional theory, this study examines the influence of responsible leadership on firm performance. Furthermore, this research investigates environmental management practices (EnvMP) as an underlying mechanism and institutional pressures as boundary condition between responsible leadership and firm performance.Design/methodology/approachTime-lagged data were collected using survey-questionnaire from 385 mid-level employees of construction industry in Pakistan. Partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze the data.FindingsResults demonstrate that responsible leadership impacts firm performance (financial and nonfinancial) directly and through EnvMP. Furthermore, institutional pressure moderates the link between responsible leadership and EnvMP. However, moderated mediation effect of intuitional pressures was found insignificant.Practical implicationsThis study suggest that EnvMP is a key process through which responsible leadership influences firms' financial and nonfinancial performance and shed lights as to when responsible leaders matter most in terms of firm performance through low or high institutional pressures.Originality/valueThis paper is an early attempt which contributes to the body of literature on responsible leadership by investigating mechanisms (how) and boundary condition (when) through which responsible leadership influences firms' financial and environmental performance.

Purpose This research aims to explore the factors that affect the adoption of Web 2.0 among knowledge workers. The research specifically investigated the role of factors related to both knowledge seeking and knowledge sharing, in the context of Web 2.0 use by health care professionals. Design/methodology/approach For this research, a cross-sectional survey design was adopted. The data were analyzed using the partial least square-structural equation modeling. Findings The results confirmed that the intention to adopt Web 2.0 depends upon both the knowledge-seeking and the knowledge-sharing attitudes. However, between the two, it is knowledge-sharing factors that are more important. Health care professionals tend to share knowledge driven by intrinsic motivators rather than by extrinsic motivators. On the other hand, knowledge-seeking attitude was determined by usefulness of knowledge and was not affected by the effort involved. Research limitations/implications All the respondents were health care professionals from India, and convenience sampling was used to reach them. This may limit the generalizability of the findings. Practical implications This research provides useful insights on implementing Web 2.0-based knowledge management systems, specifically for health care professionals. Particularly, it emphasizes the need to focus on reinforcing intrinsic motivators like self-efficacy and the joy of sharing. Originality/value It is perhaps the first study that integrates the factors related to knowledge sharing and seeking in a single theoretical model, thereby presents and tests a more realistic model of knowledge management.

Purpose This study aims to examine the influence of intellectual capital and knowledge management on competitive advantage with the mediation role of innovativeness in the Pakistan manufacturing industry. Moreover, differentiation strategy is used as a moderator between innovativeness and competitive advantage. Design/methodology/approach The data was collected from 387 manufacturing firms in Pakistan through questionnaires. Purposive random sampling was used to collect data. The partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method is used to test the proposed hypotheses. This study followed multiple regression analyses to see the influence of intellectual capital, knowledge management, innovativeness and differentiation strategy on competitive advantage. Findings The results elucidate that intellectual capital and knowledge management significantly determines innovativeness and competitive advantage. Moreover, innovativeness significantly mediates between intellectual capital, knowledge management and competitive advantage. Besides, innovativeness significantly determines competitive advantage. Business strategies significantly lead to competitive advantage. Finally, business strategies significantly moderate between innovativeness and competitive advantage. Practical implications The research highlight an important issue that how manufacturing sector management uses intellectual capital, knowledge management, innovativeness and business strategies in determining competitive advantage. Besides, it covers the gap and assists the management of the manufacturing sector to focus on exogenous constructs to examine competitive advantage. Originality/value This study adds value to the body of knowledge by focusing on predictors that impact competitive advantage. This initial study determines intellectual capital and knowledge management influence on competitive advantage and innovativeness as a mediator by using resource orchestration theory. Moreover, differentiation strategy is used as moderating variable between innovativeness and competitive advantage. The managers, students and researchers can obtain benefits from this study.

Purpose This study aims to identify the influence of knowledge management processes on the performance of basic education, including both private and confessional organizations. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on a positivist view of science and adopts a quantitative approach. A survey was conducted that received 242 answers, which were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings All the knowledge management processes were found to impact all the dimensions of organizational performance in the schools. The role knowledge creation exerts on people in the organization was made apparent, as was the way in which knowledge storage impacts three Balanced Scorecard dimensions, namely, people, internal processes and sustainability. Research limitations/implications This research is limited to private confessional basic education schools in Brazil that work at one or more levels of basic education. Practical implications This research is intended to help educational managers improve their knowledge management practices and achieve better performance within the educational environment. Originality/value The present study identifies two topics which are still under-investigated in the field of private confessional basic education, namely: the knowledge management processes and the Balanced Scorecard approach.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of knowledge management capabilities (KMCs) on organizational learning (OL) and supply chain management practices (SCMPs). In addition, to study the effect of OL, KMC and supply chain management on organizational performance (OP).Design/methodology/approachTo study the relationships between KMC, OL, SCMP and OP, different techniques such as factor analysis, correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were used to verify the validity of the proposed conceptual model, and to test the suggested hypotheses, data collected from 165 companies in the Saudi food industry (representing a response rate of 64.9 per cent) were used.FindingsAccording to the study’s findings, SCMP and OL are positively affected by KMC. Moreover, OP is directly affected by KMC, OL and SCMP.Research limitations/implicationsOwing to the specific nature of the sample, the findings of the current research are applicable only to the food industry.Originality/valueThe current research introduced a conceptual model, which has been tested and verified in the Saudi food industry. The findings recommend that both KMC and OL as well as SCMP will contribute to improving the OP. In addition, KMC will improve the SCMP and OL.

Purpose This study aims to know the effects of environmental characteristics and business partner relationships on improving innovation performance through the mediation of knowledge management practices (KMPs). Design/methodology/approach The population of this research was all manufacturing companies engaged in the food and beverage sector categorized into large industries. According to Jakarta’s Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial (BPJS) Ketenagakerjaan (social insurance administration body of employment), large industries are industries with a number of employees > 100. However, in this research, the total population did not reach 100 but only 89 companies. The analysis unit used in this research was the companies. Data collection for this research relied on questionnaires with closed questions. The questionnaires were then distributed to the sample companies by using enumerator services. In accordance with the hypotheses formulated, the data analysis used in this research was partial least square. Findings The three findings are the significant and negative effect of environmental characteristics on KMPs, the significant effect of business partner relationships on innovation performance and the insignificant effect of KMPs on innovation performance. The management of food sector manufacturing companies needs to support the activities of generating ideas carried out by employees and support their innovative ideas and creativity. Good cooperation between employees and management is highly needed in an effort to develop company innovation. Originality/value This research used the innovation diffusion paradigm and the combination of market-based and knowledge-based paradigms is expected to fill the previous research gap and become the uniqueness and originality of this research. The second originality is that this research examined the role of the KMP variable as the moderating variable. The third originality of this research is the focus on examining the effect of business partner relationships on innovation performance. These three originalities are rarely found in previous studies. Therefore, this research is expected to complete and expand the study of knowledge management and innovation performance.

PurposeThe aim of this study is to investigate the effects of soft and hard quality management (QM) practices on innovation performance, considering innovation practices as a contextual variable mediating this relationship.Design/methodology/approachUsing data from 132 Brazilian manufacturing companies, partial least square–structural equation modeling (PLS–SEM) is employed to test if soft and hard QM practices, directly, affect innovation practices and, indirectly, innovation performance. This investigation also aims to identify whether the relationships are maintained regardless of the size of the company.FindingsThe results suggest that soft QM has a positive effect on hard QM. However, only soft QM, not hard QM, has a significant effect on innovation practices. Additionally, soft QM has a significant positive effect on innovation performance through innovation practices. Company size does not influence the relationships.Practical implicationsThe findings can help managers to adjust their managerial practices to enhance the effective impact of QM on innovation performance.Originality/valueThe previous literature presents conflicting results on the relationship between QM and innovation performance. Most studies have proposed a direct relationship between both constructs. This study considers innovation practices as a mediator in this relationship. Furthermore, this paper adds to the scarce literature reporting related studies conducted in developing countries.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the dynamic relationship between digital business intensity (DBI) and process innovation through knowledge management. More specifically, the paper investigates the mechanism through which DBI and knowledge management jointly influence process innovation. Design/methodology/approach The study used a single informant approach of data collection and consistent with prior research, and a random sample of CIOs was selected and invited to participate in the survey resulting in a total 193 usable responses. The analysis and empirical validation of the research model used partial least square. Findings The results reveal a positive link between DBI and process innovation. This finding presents empirical support for hitherto anecdotal evidence regarding the impact of DBI on process innovation. In particular, the study notes the impactful role of DBI as an input repertoire that facilitates knowledge management with subsequent positive effects on process innovation. Results further surface an accentuating interplay between DBI and knowledge management on process innovation. Originality/value The current study advances our understanding of how DBI, a pre-condition to attaining digital business strategy, influences process innovation. Moreover, investigating the consequences of DBI should help offer an initial insight to managers and top management facing the challenge of implementing a successful digital footprint in an increasingly digital business landscape. Furthermore, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to investigate how digitization efforts and knowledge management practices jointly affect process innovation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate how big data collected from social media contribute to knowledge management practices, innovation processes and business performance. Design/methodology/approach The study used 418 questionnaires collected from firms that actively invest in marketing, advertising and communication in the Italian market. The hypotheses testing and analysis were conducted using structural equation modeling. Findings The results reveal that customers’ data gathered from social media produce different effects on knowledge management practices and firms’ innovation capacity. Furthermore, increased innovation capacity turned out to affect customer relationship performance directly, while it contributes to gain better financial performance only when it is used to gain relational outcomes. Originality/value The outcomes of the study help firms to develop a clear understanding about which big data retrieved from social media can be useful to improve their knowledge management practices and enhance their innovation capacity. Moreover, by investigating the mediating role of big data knowledge management in the context of social media knowledge acquisition and innovation capacity, this study also extends the mediation variables used to understand the relationship between knowledge capabilities and practices and innovation constructs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of human resource (HR) management practices on achieving competitive advantage through studying the mediating role of employee satisfaction in the context of five-star hotels in Northern Cyprus. Design/methodology/approach To produce numeric data as well as to test the hypothesis, the researchers employed structural equation modeling and AMOS. The testing included (n=439) questionnaires. The model suggested by the authors examined the tourism sector, and in particular, five-star hotels located in Northern Cyprus. Findings The main research findings revealed that HR practices had a significant effect on competitive advantage. By comparison, the research findings revealed that the mediator variable had no effect on achieving competitive advantage for five-star hotels in Northern Cyprus. Originality/value This study demonstrates originality by responding to the recommendations of prior studies conducted on HR in Northern Cyprus Island. This makes a theoretical contribution to the field, since only Turkey recognizes Northern Cyprus, which makes conducting research on this country a challenge for researchers worldwide. Based on this study’s outcomes, this paper discusses its theoretical and practical implications, as well as recommendations for future research.
