Purpose This paper aims to analyze heat and mass transfer of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) non-Newtonian fluids flow past an inclined thermally stratified porous plate using a numerical approach. Design/methodology/approach The flow equations are set up with the non-linear free convective term, thermal radiation, nanofluids and Soret–Dufour effects. Thus, the non-linear partial differential equations of the flow analysis were simplified by using similarity transformation to obtain non-linear coupled equations. The set of simplified equations are solved by using the spectral homotopy analysis method (SHAM) and the spectral relaxation method (SRM). SHAM uses the approach of Chebyshev pseudospectral alongside the homotopy analysis. The SRM uses the concept of Gauss-Seidel techniques to the linear system of equations. Findings Findings revealed that a large value of the non-linear convective parameters for both temperature and concentration increases the velocity profile. A large value of the Williamson term is detected to elevate the velocity plot, whereas the Casson parameter degenerates the velocity profile. The thermal radiation was found to elevate both velocity and temperature as its value increases. The imposed magnetic field was found to slow down the fluid velocity by originating the Lorentz force. Originality/value The novelty of this paper is to explore the heat and mass transfer effects on MHD non-Newtonian fluids flow through an inclined thermally-stratified porous medium. The model is formulated in an inclined plate and embedded in a thermally-stratified porous medium which to the best of the knowledge has not been explored before in literature. Two elegance spectral numerical techniques have been used in solving the modeled equations. Both SRM and SHAM were found to be accurate.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of thick wall parameters of a cavity on combined convection in a channel. In other words, conjugate heat transfer is solved. Design/methodology/approach – Galerkin weighted residual finite element method is used to solve the governing equations of mixed convection. Findings – The streamlines, isotherms, local and average Nusselt numbers are obtained and presented for different parameters. It is found heat transfer is an increasing function of dimensionless thermal conductivity ratio. Originality/value – The literature does not have mixed convection and conjugate heat transfer problem in a channel with thick walled cavity.

This paper is devoted to the study of the peristaltic motion of non-Newtonian fluid with heat and mass transfer through a porous medium in the channel under the effect of magnetic field. A modified Casson non-Newtonian constitutive model is employed for the transport fluid. A perturbation series’ method of solution of the stream function is discussed. The effects of various parameters of interest such as the magnetic parameter, Casson parameter, and permeability parameter on the velocity, pressure rise, temperature, and concentration are discussed and illustrated graphically through a set of figures.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on convective heat and mass transfer characteristics of Cu-water nanofluid inside a porous microchannel in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The walls of the microchannel are subjected to constant asymmetric heat fluxes and also the first order catalytic reaction. To represent the non-equilibrium region near the surfaces, the Navier’s slip condition is considered at the surfaces because of the non-adherence of the fluid-solid interface and the microscopic roughness in microchannels. Design/methodology/approach – Employing the Brinkman model for the flow in the porous medium and the “clear fluid compatible” model as a viscous dissipation model, the conservative partial differential equations have been transformed into a system of ordinary ones via the similarity variables. Closed form exact solutions are obtained analytically based on dimensionless parameters of velocity, temperature and species concentration. Findings – Results show that the addition of Cu-nanoparticles to the fluid has a significant influence on decreasing concentration, temperature distribution at the both walls and velocity profile along the microchannel. In addition, total heat transfer in microchannel increases as nanoparticles add to the fluid. Slip parameter and Hartmann number have the decreasing effects on concentration and temperature distributions. Slip parameter leads to increase velocity profiles, while Hartmann number has an opposite trend in velocity profiles. These two parameters increase the total heat transfer rate significantly. Originality/value – In the present study, a comprehensive analytical solution has been obtained for convective heat and mass transfer characteristics of Cu-water nanofluid inside a porous microchannel in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Finally, the effects of several parameters such as Darcy number, nanoparticle volume fraction, slip parameter, Hartmann number, Brinkman number, asymmetric heat flux parameter, Soret and Damkohler numbers on total heat transfer rate and fluid flow profiles are studied in more detail. To the best of author’s knowledge, no study has been conducted to this subject and the results are original.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a counter-extrapolation approach for computational heat and mass transfer with the interfacial discontinuity considered at conjugate interfaces. Design/methodology/approach By applying finite-difference approximations for the interfacial gradients along the local normal direction, the conjugate system can be simplified to the Dirichlet boundary problems for individual domains. A suitable method for the Dirichlet boundary value condition can then be used. The lattice Boltzmann method has been used to demonstrate the method. The model has been carefully validated by comparing the simulation results and theoretical solutions for steady and unsteady systems with flat or circular interfaces. Furthermore, the cooling process of a hot cylinder in a cold flow, which involves unsteady flow and heat transfer across a curved interface, has been simulated as an example to illustrate the practical usefulness of this model. Findings Good agreement has been observed in comparisons of simulations and theoretical solutions. The convergence and stability of the method have also been examined and satisfactory results have been obtained. Results of the cylinder cooling process show that a surface insulation layer can effectively reduce the heat transfer process and slow down the cooling process. Originality/value This method possesses several technical advantages, including the simple and straightforward algorithm, and accurate representation of the interface geometry. The basic idea and algorithm of the counter-extrapolation procedure presented here can be readily extended to other lattice Boltzmann models and even other computational technologies for heat and mass transfer systems with interface discontinuity.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the two-dimensional stagnation-point flow, heat and mass transfer of an incompressible upper-convected Oldroyd-B MHD nanofluid over a stretching surface with convective heat transfer boundary condition in the presence of thermal radiation, Brownian motion, thermophoresis and chemical reaction. The process of heat and mass transfer based on Cattaneo–Christov double-diffusion model is studied, which can characterize the features of thermal and concentration relaxations factors. Design/methodology/approach The governing equations are developed and similarly transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations, which are solved by a newly approximate analytical method combining the double-parameter transformation expansion method with the base function method (DPTEM-BF). Findings An interesting phenomenon can be found that all the velocity profiles first enhance up to a maximal value and then gradually drop to the value of the stagnation parameter, which indicates the viscoelastic memory characteristic of Oldroyd-B fluid. Moreover, it is revealed that the thickness of the thermal and mass boundary layer is increasing with larger values of thermal and concentration relaxation parameters, which indicates that Cattaneo–Christov double-diffusion model restricts the heat and mass transfer comparing with classical Fourier’s law and Fick’s law. Originality/value This paper focuses on stagnation-point flow, heat and mass transfer combining the constitutive relation of upper-convected Oldroyd-B fluid and Cattaneo–Christov double diffusion model.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of Soret and Dufour effects on convective heat and mass transfer flow through a porous medium in a rectangular duct in the presence of inclined magnetic field. Design/methodology/approach – Using the non-dimensional variables, the governing equations have been transformed into a set of differential equations, which are non-linear and cannot be solved analytically, therefore finite element method has been used for solving the governing equations. Findings – The influence of thermo-diffusion, diffusion thermo, radiation, dissipation, heat sources and the inclined magnetic field on all the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics has been found to be significant. Originality/value – The problem is relatively original as it combines many effects as Soret and Dufour effects and chemical reaction under inclined magnetic field.

Abstract Heat and mass transfer are investigated numerically with steady-state laminar natural convection through a vertical cylindrical enclosure filled with a liquid-saturated porous medium. The vertical wall is under a constant magnetic field and various durations of periodic heating boundary condition; the top and bottom surfaces are kept at a constant cold temperature. Continuity, momentum, and energy equations are transformed to dimensionless equations. The finite difference approach with the line successive over-relaxation (LSOR) method is used to obtain the computational results. This study covers the heat transfer, the temperature distribution, and the velocity field in the domain under the variation of different parameters. The code used is validated by modifying it to analyze the Nusselt number in the existing experimental literature of Izadpanah et al. (1998, “Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Convective Heat Transfer in a Cylindrical Porous Medium,” Int. J. Heat Fluid Flow, 19(6), pp. 629–635). This work shows that Nusselt number decreases (with varying gradient) as the aspect ratio increases, and that it increases as the Rayleigh number increases. The centerline temperature has a proportional relationship with the heating amplitude and the heating period (as the system receives more heat) and is inversely proportional with Rayleigh number. Increasing the Rayleigh number causes increased convective velocity, which affects the position of the hot region, and causes a decrease in the temperature field. Increasing the aspect ratio results in a warm stream at the center of the cylinder, and when the time period of the heating increases, the circulation becomes faster and the intensity of the temperature contour layers decreases. In this work, a correlation for Nu as a function of the mentioned parameters is developed.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic mixed convective nanofluid flow by using Buongiorno two-phase model to achieve an appropriate mechanism to improve the efficiency of solar energy systems by mitigating the energy losses. Design/methodology/approach The transport phenomena occurring in this physical problem are modelled using nonlinear partial differential equations and are non-dimensionalised by using non-similar transformations. The quasilinearisation technique is used to solve the resulting system with the help of a finite difference scheme. Findings The study reveals that the effect of the applied transverse magnetic parameter is to increase the temperature profile and to reduce the wall heat transfer rate. The Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis parameters that characterise the nanofluids contribute to the reduction in wall heat transfer rate. The presence of nanoparticles in the fluid gives rise to critical values for the thermophoresis parameter describing the behaviour of the wall heat and mass transfer rates. Wall heating and cooling are analysed by considering the percentage increase or percentage decrease in the heat and mass transfer rates in the presence of nanoparticles in the fluid. Research limitations/implications The investigation on wall cooling/heating leads to the analysis of control parameters applicable to the industrial design of thermal systems for energy storage, energy harvesting and cooling applications. Practical implications The analysis of the control parameters is of practical value to the solar industry. Social implications In countries, such as South Africa, daily power cuts are a reality. Any research into improving the quality of energy obtained from alternate sources is a national necessity. Originality/value From the literature survey in the present study, it is found that no similar work has been reported in the open literature that analyses the time-dependent mixed convection flow along the exponentially stretching surface in the presence of the effects of a magnetic field, nanoparticles and non-similar solutions.
