Comparative analysis on rheological characteristics of different modified asphalt based on DSR and BBR evaluation

Purpose In order to evaluate the rheological properties of asphalt more comprehensively and effectively, and to explore and discuss the practicability of relevant models in the evaluation of the rheological properties of asphalt. Design/methodology/approach Based on the rheological and viscoelastic theories, temperature scanning, frequency scanning and multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests of different modified asphalt were carried out by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) to obtain relevant viscoelastic parameters and evaluate the high temperature properties of different modified asphalt. Based on the time-temperature equivalence principle, the main curve was constructed to study the viscoelastic properties of asphalt in a wider frequency domain. The main curve was fitted with the CAM model, and the rheological properties of different modified asphalt were evaluated through the analysis of model parameters. The creep stiffness and creep velocity of different modified asphalt were obtained through the rheological test of bending beam (BBR), and the low-temperature performance of different modified asphalt was analyzed by using Burgers model to fit the creep compliance. Findings The results show that the high temperature rheological properties of several modified asphalt studied in the test are ranked from best to worst as follows: PE modified asphalt > SBS modified asphalt > SBR modified asphalt. Short-term aging can improve the high temperature performance of asphalt, and different types of modifiers can promote or inhibit this improvement effect. Based on BBR test and Burgers model fitting analysis, SBR modified asphalt has the best low temperature performance, followed by SBS modified asphalt, while PE modified asphalt has poor low temperature performance, so it is not suitable to be used as road material in low temperature area. Originality/value Combined with effective evaluation methods, the rheological properties of asphalt at different temperatures and angles were systematically evaluated, and the evolution of rheological properties of asphalt characterized by model parameters was further analyzed by advanced model simulation.

The mixture of styreneic methyl copolymers (SMCs) normal temperature-modified asphalt and styrene-butadiene styrene block copolymer (SBS)-modified asphalt (SMCSBS) compound-modified asphalt was investigated in this study. The viscosity and temperature properties of compound modified asphalt (SMCSBS) were studied by Brookfield rotary viscosity test. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) were used to test SMCSBS compound modified asphalt with different SMC additions. Finally, the microstructure and physicochemical properties of SMCSBS were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the modification mechanism of the SMCSBS was studied. The results show that the viscosity of the compound-modified asphalt added with SMC is improved, which is conducive to improving its workability. With the increase of SMC content, the high-temperature performance of the compound modified asphalt firstly increases and then decreases with the increase of SMC content. When the content of SMC is 12%, its high-temperature performance is the best. Compared with SBS-modified asphalt, the SMCSBS has better low-temperature performance, and the creep stiffness S and creep rate m of the SMC with different content are better than that of SBS. Finally, the microcosmic characteristics show that the SMC can give full play to its characteristics and can be uniformly dispersed in SBS modified asphalt. SMC is essentially a surfactant, which can reduce the viscosity and construction temperature by changing the surface tension and surface free energy of asphalt molecules. The curing agent of epoxy resin is slowly cross-linked and cured after contacting with air to form a certain strength, thus improving the road performance of the asphalt mixture.

Rejuvenating seal, widely used due to its economic benefits and convenience, is one of the preventive maintenance methods. The rejuvenating seal materials (RSM) work on the surface course of asphalt pavement. This paper described the effects of RSM on the physical properties and rheological properties of aged SBS modified asphalt (ASMA). Two RSM, R and C, were involved in this research. The dosage of each RSM was 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% of ASMA by weight. Physical properties, including softening point, penetration and ductility, were tested. Rheological properties were carried out by means of dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Results show that RSMs, R and C, have improved the low-temperature performance and fatigue resistance. R has more positive effect on low-temperature performance and fatigue resistance of ASMA compared to values of C.

Using the waste pavement materials can not only save resources such as bitumen and aggregate, but also reduce the pollution of environment. In this study, the high temperature performance and the moisture stability of recycled SBS modified asphalt mixture were evaluated by rutting test, immersion Marshall Test and freeze-thaw splitting routine test. In addition, the low temperature performance of recycled modified mixture was also analyzed by Fénix test whose operation was simple. The tests results illustrated that it was advantageous to improve the high temperature performance of recycled mixture and it has less influence on moisture stability with the addition of RAP. However, it had a significant adverse effect on the low temperature performance for recycled SBS modified asphalt mixture with a large quantity of RAP content. Therefore, it suggests that the RAP content for recycled SBS modified mixture is not too high.

70# and 90# matrix asphalt mixture with MaR were studied through dynamic modulus test, rutting test, freeze-thaw splitting test, bending test to study the applicability of the Modifying agent of rubber plastic compound (MaR) in matrix asphalt mixture.Test results were Compared with SBSI-C modified asphalt mixture.The results indicate that: high-temperature stability of MaR+70# asphalt mixture is as well as SBSI-C modified asphalt mixture,and is bettere than MaR+90# asphalt mixture; water stability of MaR+90# asphalt mixture is bettere than SBSI-C modified asphalt mixture and MaR+70# asphalt mixture; low temperature performance of MaR+90# asphalt mixture is bettere than MaR+70# asphalt mixture, but is worse than modified asphalt mixture SBSI-C ; MaR+70# asphalt mixture can be first used in area of resisting high temperature and rutting, MaR+90# asphalt mixture can be used if the water stability performance and low temperature performance are considered.

Fiber asphalt concrete has been more and more widely used in highway construction. For analyzing high and low temperature performance of fiber asphalt mixture, rheological properties of fiber asphalt mortar were studied through indoor test. Impact of Rheological properties of the fiber asphalt mortar on high temperature and low temperature properties of asphalt mixture was analyzed. Results showed that the larger fiber content was, the better performance of asphalt mixture's high temperature stability, fiber asphalt mortar rut factor and rutting tests results of asphalt mixture were linear correlation, reflecting the high temperature performance of asphalt mixture; With the increase of fiber content, variation of stiffness modulus, creep rate indicators and mixture low temperature performance was consistent, and rheological properties of fiber asphalt mortar could characterize low temperature performance of asphalt mixture.

Strong ultraviolet light and low-temperature are the typical environmental characteristics in high-altitude areas. The performance of SBS-modified asphalt in the above environmental characteristics needs further study. To improve the resistance ultraviolet (UV) ageing and low-temperature performance of copolymer- (SBS-) modified asphalt, an SBS-modified asphalt containing nano-ZnO and nano-TiO2 is proposed. In this paper, nano-ZnO, nano-TiO2, and SBS were used as modifiers with the silane coupling agent (KH-560) as the nanomaterial surface modification. The orthogonal test table was used to analyse the effects of the three modifiers on the physical properties of modified asphalt at different dosages. On this basis, the physical properties, low-temperature properties, and ageing indices (carbonyl index and sulfoxide index) were studied for base asphalt, SBS-modified asphalt, nano-ZnO/SBS-modified asphalt, and nano-ZnO/nano-TiO2/SBS composite-modified asphalt before and after photoaging. The content changes of characteristic elements (Zn and Ti) in the nano-ZnO/nano-TiO2/SBS composite-modified asphalt before and after ageing were studied by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and the UV ageing mechanism was revealed. The results indicate that two nanoparticles show the best compatibility with asphalt after surface modification and can improve the binding ability between SBS and base asphalt. The orthogonal test analysis shows that nano-ZnO has a highly significant effect on the low- and high-temperature performance of the nano-ZnO/nano-TiO2/SBS composite-modified asphalt, and nano-TiO2 has a significant effect on the high-temperature performance. Three optimal composite-modified systems for base asphalt including 4% nano-ZnO/1.5% nano-TiO2/3.2% SBS were proposed and had the best antiaging ability. Compared with the sulfoxide index, the carbonyl index changed most obviously before and after ageing. Additionally, the results reveal that nano-TiO2 has a good absorption effect at a wavelength of 365 nm (ultraviolet light), while nano-ZnO is liable to photolysis, and its activity decreases at this wavelength.

Currently, rejuvenator seal which is one of the preventive maintenance methods is more widely used due to its economic benefits and convenience. This paper described the chemical and rheological evaluation of the aged styrene butadiene styrene modified asphalt (ASMA) treated by two rejuvenator sealer materials (RSMs). First the ASMA was rejuvenated by mixing with the RSMs. Then the ASMA and two rejuvenated binders were re-aged by 10h PAV test. At last, the new binder, ASMA, rejuvenated ASMAs, re-aged binders were tested by Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the first aging of the new binder had a significant decrease of the low temperature performance and slight improvement of the high temperature performance. In addition, the high temperature performance increased obviously after 10h PAV test. Two RSMs could significantly soften the aged binder due to increase of maltene content existing in the RSMs, and the rejuvenated binder exhibited a better low performance after the 10h PAV test. However they cannot restore the low temperature completely because that RSMs cannot remedy the degradation of SBS modifier and remove the carbonyl produced in the aging progress.

The deteriorating ecological environment and the concept of sustainable development have highlighted the importance of waste reuse. This article investigates the performance changes resulting from the incorporation of shellac into asphalt binders. Seashell powder-modified asphalt was prepared with 5%, 10%, and 15% admixture using the high-speed shear method. The microstructure of the seashell powder was observed by scanning electron microscope test (SEM); the physical-phase analysis of the seashell powder was carried out using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) test; the surface characteristics and pore structure of shellac were analyzed by the specific surface area Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) test; and Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) qualitatively analyzed the composition and changes of functional groups of seashell powder-modified asphalt. The conventional performance index of seashell powder asphalt was analyzed by penetration, softening point, and ductility (5 °C) tests; the effect of seashell powder on asphalt binder was studied using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) at high and low temperatures, respectively. The results indicate the following: seashell powder is a coarse, porous, and angular CaCO3 bio-material; seashell powder and the asphalt binder represent a stable physical mixture of modified properties; seashell powder improves the consistency, hardness, and high-temperature performance of the asphalt binder but weakens the low-temperature performance of it; seashell powder enhances the elasticity, recovery performance, and permanent deformation resistance of asphalt binders and improves high-temperature rheological properties; finally, seashell powder has a minimal effect on the crack resistance of asphalt binders at very low temperatures. In summary, the use of waste seashells for recycling as bio-modifiers for asphalt binders is a practical approach.

Prone to low temperature cracking of asphalt pavement problems in cold areas, testing BBR on 70# base asphalt and 4 kinds of different dosage of SBS modified asphalt, testing TSRST on their mixture to appraisal the low temperature performance of SBS modified asphalt mixture. Results show that compared with the temperature stress of internal cracks of base asphalt and SBS modified asphalt mixture not rise significantly. But the stress of SBS asphalt mixture growing slow and the temperature of cracking reduce obviously; it means the low temperature performance improved. This shows that SBS improves the toughness and reduced the modulus of asphalt mixture in low temperature, rather than increasing the tensile strength of mixture specimens.
