This paper deals with teaching environmental sustainability to students in higher education, focusing on the sustainability of buildings and the built environment and more specifically on energy. Integrating sustainability issues into the curricula of engineering education proves to be a big challenge. The main issues are: the fuzzy definition of sustainability; continuously advancing insights in environmental sciences and mono disciplinary versus multidisciplinary approaches. These issues are put into relation with theories and practice regarding curriculum development and change.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to analyse the relationship between entrepreneurial skills and innovation commitment and entrepreneurial skills and environmental commitment as drivers of awareness on sustainable development of higher education students. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 1,318 business and management students out of the 3,535 students of Tecnocampus Pompeu Fabra University in Spain during the 2017-2018 academic year was selected to conduct a survey regarding their entrepreneurial skills and sustainability commitment, resulting in a total number of responses of 515. A structural equation model is proposed to contrast the hypothesis. Findings The statistical analysis showed the existence of a positive relation between the entrepreneurial skill of self-consciousness, innovation and environmental commitment to foster sustainability and sustainable development. It is one of the few studies related to the self-conciousness competence of the entrepreneurial skills which found, as a novelty, that the entrepreneurial skill of self-consciousness is the skill with the greater impact on innovation and environmental commitment. Research limitations/implications The limitations of the study are that it is based on a sample of students taking entrepreneurship courses at a specific Spanish University that is not representative of all entrepreneurs in all universities. Practical implications The research proposes including entrepreneurial skills programmes in higher education and research programmes as a way to assure commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability. Originality/value Promoting entrepreneurial skills among higher education students could act as drivers for sustainable development.

Community empowerment activities in general aim to form individuals and communities to become independent. Independence is a condition experienced by a person which is characterized by the ability to think, decide and do something that is deemed appropriate in order to achieve solving the problems faced by using the power/ability possessed. The training activities aim to equip participants with metal welding skills. The activity was carried out at the Mechanical Engineering Education Laboratory, FKIP UPR. The purpose of these activities is in line with the higher education functions and objectives mandated in Law no. 12 of 2012 Article 4 paragraph 3; namely to "Develop Science and Technology by paying attention to and applying the values of Humanities". With this activity, it is hoped that participants will have more knowledge about metal welding. The training methods used are lectures with presentation techniques, direct guided practice and evaluation.

This paper summarizes the discussions of the 1st European Seminar on Environmental Engineering Education (E3), which was held at EAWAG, Zurich, Switzerland in August 1999. Although the emerging discipline of environmental engineering, which was once viewed as being a sub-set of civil or chemical engineering, has established a status in its own right, a definition of environmental engineering is still not agreed among European engineering educators. This report discusses the variation between European countries and the way in which higher education institutions in these countries address the educational needs of environmental engineers. A review of the acceptance of this new discipline by employers and the status of environmental engineering as a profession throughout Europe is presented. The question of how to achieve greater compatibility and comparability of the systems of environmental engineering education in Europe is addressed and some objectives are identified in order to overcome the present difficulties.

The article reveals the use of active teaching methods in the preparation of higher education students in the speciality «Hotel & Restaurant Business». The emphasis is placed on the current competencies for professions in the hotel and restaurant business, and it is noted that in the near future the technical skills will prevail, which will be complemented by strong personal, social and cooperation skills. It has been noted that these skills cannot be cultivated in a passive educational environment, and therefore, the preference should be given to active teaching methods that can improve the training of specialists in hotel and restaurant business, improve their attitude to learning and provide them with interesting learning and cognitive opportunities. The main approaches to the definition of the concept «active teaching methods» have been revealed, and it has been determined that active teaching methods are the methods that «activate» students by involving their cognitive abilities and processes, making them the active parts of the learning process, which in its turn promotes the development of critical thinking, the increase of motivation to learning, cognitive interest, the activation of creative potential, independence in obtaining knowledge, and the formation of «soft» competencies. The list of active teaching methods has been supplemented by the methods that are widely advertised and professionally substantiated in higher educational institutions today («incident method», «scribing», «reduced method», «delayed assessment method», «mind mapping», «Plus – Minus – Interesting» and others). It has been proposed to introduce such teaching methods in the training of specialists in hotel and restaurant business as: contest and business simulations. The process of their application has been described as well. The research has established that these methods have not become active yet, but they have significant results in improving the quality of training of higher education students in the speciality «Hotel & Restaurant Business».

The article deals with the experience of creation, didactic possibilities and peculiarities of the use of ecological trails. Their role in the training of future biology teachers is revealed. The definition of «comprehensive educational and scientific ecological path» is substantiated. The characteristic and structure of the complex educational and scientific ecological trail «Outskirts of Pereiaslav region», created on the basis of the SHEI «Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi Hryhorii Skovoroda State Pedagogical University» was created and the possibilities of its use were analyzed. Some aspects of organizing research work for secondary and higher education students are covered. A set of tasks was proposed, which were carried out and carried out directly on each of the key sites of the path.It was proved that the activity of secondary and higher education students, organized on the basis of the comprehensive educational and scientific ecological trail «Outskirts of Pereiaslavl region», promoted the expansion and deepening of biological knowledge, formed the ability to analyze and compare objects of wildlife, to find causal consequences, monitoring the environment, developing abilities for research and design activities, and raising cognitive activity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been forcing people to work remotely in virtual teams around the globe. Global virtual teamwork will continue, and people are not sufficiently prepared for this, resulting in reduced team commitment and lower performance. Higher education institutions need to equip their graduates with International Online Collaboration Competencies (IOCCs), but research into these is fragmented, lacking even a definition of these competencies. This study was systematically reviewing empirical studies on IOCCs. 516 studies were reviewed, and data from 14 full texts were analyzed. Six competence domains emerged from the literature. Most studies focused on single domains of IOCCs, and none of the studies covered all domains. Results indicate that this preliminary framework for higher education students provides a first overview of the fragmented literature on IOCCs. Methods to teach and evaluate IOCCs acquisition are underdeveloped but urgently needed to equip professionals for global virtual teamwork.
