In this work, The hybrid hydroxyapatite (HaP), chitosan (CH) and graphene nanosheets (GNS) mixtures were applied by electrospinning on the surface of GNS and Si3N4 (SN) binary powder reinforced hybrid titanium (Ti) metal composites surface to improve composite biosurface functionallity. The surfaces of coated materials were characterized and antibacterial tests were carried on for their suitability in the industry by performing artificial body fluid tests. The hybrid nano fiber coatings formed a homogeneous structure on the composite. According to bioactivity tests and microstructure analysis, it was seen that HaP, which has the best results in the change of pH (pH= 11.80) values. The lowest mass change (0.0005 g) was observed on the 10th day of pure titanium. The highest mass change (0.0210 g) was obtained as on the HaP coated hybrid titanium composite. According to the antibacterial test result the hybrid nanofiber containing silver (Ag+) doped HaP on Ti composites showed the best antibacterial property aganist the E.coli. The fabricated electrospin coated hybrid composites can be a potantial candidate for dental, orthopedic implant applications and tissue engineering.

Abstract Background Probiotic biofilm is considered a new version of an advanced natural protection method recently placed on researchers’ agenda as the fourth generation of probiotics. In several studies, probiotic biofilms have been produced exclusively in the bacterial culture medium, but in this study, the biofilm of Lactobacillus plantarum PTCC 1745 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus PTCC 1637 were formed in food (milk) and evaluated for the first time. Methods The biofilm was produced in milk then was transferred to yogurt in whole and crushed forms to be tested in real conditions as probiotic bacteria carriers. Survival was assessed for 21 days as well as gastrointestinal conditions. Results Results demonstrate that the number of bacteria in biofilm did not change significantly during 21 days of refrigerated storage. In contrast, planktonic bacteria was decreased by about 2.8 log simultaneously. Another significant result is that the biofilm could appropriately protect the bacteria in the stomach and intestine simulated conditions. So, no significant reduction was observed in the number of bacteria during 120 min, but planktonic cells were destroyed after 30 min. Conclusions In conclusion results indicated that L. plantarum and L. rhamnosus could form a very desirable and strong biofilm in vitro and milk that can have a good protective effect on yogurt’s probiotic survival process and storage. Therefore, the probiotic biofilm technique can introduce a new generation of probiotics to the food and pharmaceutical industries

Abstract. This paper proposes a novel approach to facilitate air quality aware decision making and to support planning actors to take effective measures for improving the air quality in cities and regions. Despite many improvements over the past decades, air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ground-level ozone (O3) pose still one of the major risks to human health and the environment. Based on both a general analysis of the air quality situation and regulations in the EU and Germany as well as an in-depth analysis of local management practices requirements for better decision making are identified. The requirements are used to outline a system architecture following a co-design approach, i.e., besides scientific and industry partners, local experts and administrative actors are actively involved in the system development. Additionally, the outlined system incorporates two novel methodological strands: (1) it employs a deep neural network (DNN) based data analytics approach and (2) makes use of a new generation of satellite data, namely Sentinel-5 Precursor (Sentinel-5P). Hence, the system allows for providing areal and high-resolution (e.g., street-level) real-time and forecast (up to 48 hours) data to inform decision makers for taking appropriate short-term measures, and secondly, to simulate air quality under different planning options and long-term actions such as modified traffic flows and various urban layouts.

A new generation of students is accustomed to daily use of mobile devices, and educating them in the proper way is a complicated task. Video games are an ideal tool for communicating with students, and finding the right combination of using mobile devices with educational games is important for educating them. This paper describes a novel approach to educational game defining and interpretation. Application of a model-driven approach to educational game interpretation enables the use of the same game on different devices and platforms. The authors enable the interpretation of an educational game on any mobile device. These games take learning outside the classroom and provide a fun and interesting way of learning anytime, anywhere. The authors use an adventure game as an example using this methodology.

Many digital preservation scenarios are based on the migration strategy, which itself is heavily tool-dependent. For popular, well-defined and often open file formats – e.g., digital images, such as PNG, GIF, JPEG – a wide range of tools exist. Migration workflows become more difficult with proprietary formats, as used by the several text processing applications becoming available in the last two decades. If a certain file format can not be rendered with actual software, emulation of the original environment remains a valid option. For instance, with the original Lotus AmiPro or Word Perfect, it is not a problem to save an object of this type in ASCII text or Rich Text Format. In specific environments, it is even possible to send the file to a virtual printer, thereby producing a PDF as a migration output. Such manual migration tasks typically involve human interaction, which may be feasible for a small number of objects, but not for larger batches of files. We propose a novel approach using a software-operated VNC abstraction layer in order to replace humans with machine interaction. Emulators or virtualization tools equipped with a VNC interface are very well suited for this approach. But screen, keyboard and mouse interaction is just part of the setup. Furthermore, digital objects need to be transferred into the original environment in order to be extracted after processing. Nevertheless, the complexity of the new generation of migration services is quickly rising; a preservation workflow is now comprised not only of the migration tool itself, but of a complete software and virtual hardware stack with recorded workflows linked to every supported migration scenario. Thus the requirements of OAIS management must include proper software archiving, emulator selection, system image and recording handling. The concept of view-paths could help either to automatically determine the proper pre-configured virtual environment or to set up system images for certain migration workflows. View-paths may rise in demand, as the generation of PDF output files from Word Perfect input could be cached as pre-fabricated emulator system images. The current groundwork provides several possible optimizations, such as using the automation features of the original environments.

A prototype of a new generation of centrifugal pumps has been developed, with aim to improve typical weaknesses like narrow operable range due to slip and incidence losses in off-design conditions. The peculiarity of this pump is the absence of any stator blade, which has been substituted with a counter-rotating radial impeller. According to an exhaustive literature survey, the usage of a mixed flow impeller as a front rotor, followed by a radial-flow impeller seems to be a novel approach in pump design. The combination of a high specific speed impeller with a low specific speed rotating diffuser produces a flexible adaptability against aforementioned limits. Keep on adding energy to the fluid instead of just diffusing the flow, permits to reach a downsized hydraulics and an increased entire machine power density. The characteristic of such a pump needs to be analyzed as 3D-surface, both speeds are actually independent and for a fixed discharge the head rise and efficiency become surfaces. A new definition of optimized characteristic curve, with variable speed ratio, could be identified based on those performance maps. A special test rig has been built to measure the machine performance, distinguishing the mechanical losses of both shafts separately with no-load measurements. The sensitivity of the system on speed ratio variation has been explored. The experiments show the presence of different best speed ratios which maximize alternately the head or the efficiency. Additionally, the results confirm the possibility to expand the working range acting on the rotational speeds. Head rise and efficiency curves with varying speed ratio, as functions of the flow rate are finally shown using several diagrams, highlighting the advantages of this new design.
