In the field of cold bending, it is necessary to use ball mandrels, especially to bend thin-walled tubes with a small radius. However, the bending process with a ball mandrel is complex and expensive, and it is easy to jam the core ball inside the tube. To solve these issues, we designed two kinds of hollow non-ball mandrel schemes with low stiffness that were suitable for the small radius bending of thin-walled tubes. We evaluated the forming quality of cold bending numerically and the influence of the hollow section length and thickness on the forming indices. Our results showed that the thickness of the hollow section has a greater influence on forming quality than the length. As the hollow section’s thickness increased, the wrinkling rate first declined by approximately 40% and then increased by above 50%. When the thickness was 11 mm in scheme 1 and 13 mm in scheme 2, the wrinkling rate reached minimum values of 1.32% and 1.50%, respectively. As the hollow section’s thickness increased, the flattening rate decreased by more than 60% and the thinning rate increased by about 40%. A multi-objective optimization of forming indices was carried out by ideal point method and grey wolf optimizer. By comparing the forming results before and after optimization, the feasibility of using the proposed hollow mandrel was proved, and the hollow mandrel scheme of standard cylinder is therefore recommended.

Due to their high fatigue life, specific strength and specific stiffness in comparison with steel, carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) cables have attracted the infrastructure industry interest in recent years, primarily for use as structural tendons. Particularly the oil and gas industry showed interest for application in offshore platform anchorage systems, because of their exceptional corrosion and creep/relaxation behaviour. In such applications, the cables need to be tensioned in service and to be bent around relatively small-diameter spools for transportation and maintenance. Therefore, their tensile and bending behaviour is a subject of great concern. The aim of this work was to perform a test program on 1 × 19 CFRP cables in two different situations: tensile loading and four-point bending loading. Finite element models were developed to simulate both conditions, including frictional contact between the cable wires. A simplified analytical model was also used to predict the cable behaviour in tension. Numerical predictions were compared to experimental data showing relatively good accuracy, unlike the verified analytical model. CFRP cables presented outstanding tensile behaviour, but bending over small radius spools could not reach the performance of steel wire ropes. Furthermore, simulation could only fairly predict bending below strains of μ1,000 μe for the external rods, beyond which the cable presented highly non-linear behaviour that could not be simulated by the numerical model.

Small pieces of metal are generated during trimming of automotive body panels. Commonly referred to as slivers, these pieces can be imprinted into the surface of stamped panels. This may require metalfinish of every stamped exterior panel. The objective of the paper is to study the influence of trimming conditions on quality of trimmed surface and to modify the trimming process to eliminate slivers and burrs from the trimmed surface. Suggested solution includes two measures: 1) building an elastic support of the offal eliminating bending of the area of the blank being trimmed off; 2) creating the preference of crack propagation from the lower shearing edge by machining a small radius on the upper shearing edge.

The driving theory and the dynamic characteristics of small radius steering, medium radius steering and big radius steering is analyzed, and the simulation model is established under Matlab/Simulink. Then the track bulldozers steering performance of the three sheerings is simulated. The results show that, at different steering modes, the running states of the two sides driving motors are not the same, and the track driving forces of the two sides vary widely. The track driving force is great in the small radius steering model, while small in the medium and big radius steering models. The simulation results lay the foundation for dual-motor drive track bulldozers steering performance matching.

Environmental noise pollution is the primary environmental problem faced by the superstructure of metro depots. The throat area of depot is prone to high wheel-rail impact noise due to the use of seam lines, multiple joints, turnouts and small radius curves. The noise exerts through fire and ventilation openings on the side walls, which may cause high annoyance to the residents in the superstructures both on the upper cover and surrounding areas. In this paper, a field test was condected on the environmental noise in the throat area of metro depot. The noise of the trackside and adjacent open space were recorded, and the time-frequency domain characteristics and statistical characteristics and attenuation law of the noise generated by train operation in the throat area were analyzed. The research results have certain guiding significance for the prediction and control of noise in the throat area of the depot.
