From 1996 to 1998, listed companies in China were required to achieve a minimum return on equity (ROE) of 10 percent in each of the previous three years before they could apply for permission to issue additional shares. As a result of this rule, there was a heavy concentration of ROEs in the area just above 10 percent. We show that the Chinese regulators appear to have scrutinized firms using excess amounts of nonoperating income to reach the 10 percent hurdle. In addition, their ability to do so seems to have improved over time, which allows them to be better able to identify firms that subsequently performed better. However, many firms were still able to gain rights issue approval through excess nonoperating income. We show that these firms subsequently underperformed other approved firms that did not use the same practice, indicating that the Chinese regulators' objective of guiding capital resources toward the well-performing sectors is partially compromised by earnings management.

The investigation has been performed using panel data procedure for a sample of 204 Vietnamese listed companies in two different groups: Large cap and Mid cap, listed in HOSE and HNX during the period of five years from 2015 to 2019. The study uses three performance measures (including return on equity, return on asset, Tobin’s Q) as dependent variable. The independent variables for measurement of diversification on Board are the number of females and the diversification for Supervisory Board are the number of females only. Other independent variables are average age of Board member, CEO duality and the number of independent directors. The results indicated that firm performance have positive relationship with nationality diversity on Board and gender diversity on Supervisory Board. The equity structure is the basis for corporate governance, and the decisive factor for performance of listed companies. Considering the return on equity as the measure index of company performance, the paper has collected 2014-2016 data related to index of equity structure from 32 listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen, made descriptive statistical analysis and correlation analysis on it with spass20.0 statistical software, and discussed the relation between equity structure and performance of listed companies. The research finds that: Chinese listed companies for building industry still have relatively high equity concentration, imperfect internal governance mechanism and poor equity restriction. The effect of “bargaining” is difficultly developed to promote the growth of performance. China shall further strengthen the efforts to control, spur listed companies to reinforce the internal management, and optimize the equity structure to ensure the effective balance, with the purpose of accelerating the healthy and sustainable development of listed companies and safeguarding the interests of medium-small investors.

This paper presents a theoretical-empirical study comprising a comparative analysis of the influence of specific strategies for increasing share capital on the economic efficiency of companies listed on the Polish and German capital markets. The paper consists of three parts. The first part includes the evaluation of possible relations between the efficiency of a company’s activities and the process of share capital increase. The second part contains the results of empirical research on changes in share capital in the examined companies, which are listed on the WIG-20 and DAX indices. The third part presents the results of the study on their efficiency in the context of methods applied in order to increase share capital. The assessment of the efficiency of publicly-listed companies was conducted by means of the nonparametric DEA method, using measures oriented on input and constant returns-to-scale. The effects (results) are shown by means of the following ratios: return on sales, return on equity, and return on assets, whereas the inputs are illustrated by ratios of share capital dynamics, financing total assets by share capital and equity dilution.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of financial performance, firm liquidity and financial leverage of Indian listed firms. This study uses both static models (pooled, fixed, and random effects) and Generalized Moment Methods (GMM). Financial leverage (FINLE) is defined by the ratio of total liabilities to total assets, whereas the current ratio and the quick ratio are used as firm liquidity factors. Further, a set of financial performance determinants such as return on assets, profit after tax, return on capital employed, return on equity, and Tobin-Q are used as independent factors. The results indicated that profit after tax, return on equity, return on capital employed, and Tobin-Q are the most significant financial success variables that influence financial leverage of Indian listed companies. Furthermore, profit after tax, return on capital invested, return on equity, and Tobin-Q are considered to have a substantial effect on financial leverage among the financial success indicators. In the case of firm liquidity, the findings show that the current ratio and the quick ratio have a substantial effect on the financial leverage of Indian listed companies.
