Usage of the internet is increasing in the daily life of humans due to the need for speedy task completion for their daily services. Most of the living time is spent in some indoor environment which provides WiFi which is the basic need of internet connectivity using Wireless Access Points (WAP). Nowadays, most of the devices are IoT-based ones, which connect with the outer world through the access points in the existing environment. The wearable IoT devices may be misplaced somewhere and we need a specific scenario which helps to identify the misplaced mobile devices based on access points where they are connected by their unique identity such as MAC address. Most of the time, unrestricted WiFi access provided in the public environment is used by the end-user. In that scenario, the tracking of misplaced mobile devices is creating an issue when the WiFi is in switch-off mode. This paper proposes a technique for tracking a mobile device by using a location-aware approach with KNN and intelligent rules by tracking the channel accessed by the user to find the misplaced path by examining the device connected WAP positions.

Since the advent of the Internet, educators have realised its potential as a medium for teaching. The term e-learning has been introduced to describe this Internet-based education. Although e-learning applications are popular, much research is now underway to improve the features they provide. For example, the addition of synchronous communication methods and multimedia is being studied. With the introduction of wireless networks, mobile devices are also being investigated as a medium to present learning content. Currently, the use of 3-dimensional (3D) graphics is being explored for creating virtual learning environments online. Virtual reality (VR) is already being used in multiple disciplines for teaching various tasks. This chapter focuses on describing some VR systems, and also discusses the current state of e-learning on mobile devices. We also present the VR learning environment that we have developed, incorporating many of the techniques mentioned above for both desktop and mobile devices.

Recent advances in mobile computing have spawned a very heterogeneous environment of mobile devices, which is reflected by the presence of the devices’ different capabilities. This chapter focuses on handling this device heterogeneity in the context of content adaptation of mobile services so that generic content can be provided to any device in the heterogeneity spectrum. We present an approach that enables mobile services to adapt its content provision to a mobile device by considering the device’s content provision capabilities. Those capabilities encompass both the communication channels for content delivery and the capabilities to present content to the user. Our approach is designed as a service platform that implements a content adaptation procedure for Web-based mobile services by utilizing device capability databases and generic page transformation. This approach enables mobile devices to visualize any generic content device specifically on their integrated browsers.

The collection and dissemination of geographic information has long been the prerogative of national mapping agencies. Nowadays, location-aware mobile devices could potentially turn everyone into a mapmaker. Collaborative mapping is an initiative to collectively produce models of real-world locations online that people can then access and use to virtually annotate locations in space. This chapter describes the technical and social developments that underpin this revolution in mapmaking. It presents a framework for an alternative geographic information infrastructure that draws from collaborative mapping initiatives and builds on established Web technologies. Storing geographic information in machine-readable formats and exchanging geographic information through Web services, collaborative mapping may enable the “napsterisation” of geographic information, thus providing complementary and alternative geographic information from the products created by national mapping agencies.

Attendance marking in a classroom is one of the methods used to track the student’s presence in the lecture. The conventional method that is being enforced has shown to be vulnerable, inaccurate and time-consuming especially in a large classroom. It is difficult to identify absentees and proxy attendees based on the conventional attendance marking method. In order to overcome the challenges faced in the conventional method, a web-based mobile attendance system with facial recognition feature is proposed. It incorporated the existing mobile devices with a camera and the face recognition system to allow the attendance system to be used in classrooms automatically and efficiently with minor implementation requirements. The system prototype received positive responses from the volunteers who tested the system to replace the conventional attendance marking.

Purpose Learning management systems (LMSs) have been embraced for their potential to create a ubiquitous learning that is free from time and space constraints. Mobile devices afford enhanced mobility that enables flexible learning with LMSs. Thus, understanding students’ use of mobile devices to interact with LMSs and the influencing factors is essential. This paper aims to examine the factors that influenced students’ behavioural intention in using Web-based LMSs via mobile phones and compared the factors with those that affect students’ general acceptance of Web-based LMSs. Design/methodology/approach This study surveyed 356 university students and interviewed 17 students on the various factors that might affect their LMS adoption. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the survey data. Findings This study identified that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influence and facilitating conditions were significant determinants of students’ usage intention in both contexts. However, social factors exerted greater influence on students’ behavioural intentions of mobile access than the attitudinal factors. The results also pinpointed some sociocultural and tempo-spatial factors that might have minimized the influence of perceived usefulness in the mobile context. Originality/value The study calls for special attention to the potential influences of sociocultural norms and tempo-spatial circumstances of mobile use in shaping the nature of learners’ voluntary mobile use of LMSs.
