In current System-on-Chip (SoC) design, the main engineering trade-off concerns hardware efficiency and design effort. Hardware efficiency traditionally regards cost versus performance (in high-volume electronics), but recently energy consumption emerged as a dominant criterion, even in products without batteries. "The" most effective way to increase HW efficiency is to exploit application characteristics in the HW. The traditional way of looking at HW design tends to consider it a time-consuming and tedious task, however. Given the current lack of HW designers, and the pressure of time-to-market, clearly a desire exists to fine-balance the merits and effort of tuning your HW to your application. This paper discusses methods and tool support for HW application-tuning at different levels of granularity. Furthermore we treat several ways of applying reconfigurable HW to allow both silicon reuse and the ability to tune the HW to the application after fabrication. Our main focus is on a methodology for application-tuning the architecture of DSP datapaths. Our primary contribution is on reusing and generalizing this methodology to application-tuning DSP instruction sets, and providing tool support for efficient compilation for these instruction sets. Furthermore, we propose an architecure for a reconfigurable instruction-decoder, enabling application-tuning of the instruction-set after fabrication.

High Performance Computing architectures have become incredibly complex and exploiting their full potential is becoming more and more challenging. As a consequence, automatic performance tuning (autotuning) of HPC applications is of growing interest and many research groups around the world are currently involved. Autotuning is still a rapidly evolving research field with many different approaches being taken. This special issue features selected papers presented at the Dagstuhl seminar on “Automatic Application Tuning for HPC Architectures” in October 2013, which brought together researchers from the areas of autotuning and performance analysis in order to exchange ideas and steer future collaborations.

Background: Natural anthocyanins present a low solubility in lipophilic media, which compromises their effective application in lipophilic systems. In this work, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (Cy3glc) was esterified by the addition of fatty acids with increasing chain-lengths and a structure-activity relationship was performed towards the description of the best analog for skin-care applications. Methods: By enzymatic hemi-synthesis, it was possible to obtain 5 structurally related derivatives of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside with successive C2 increments in the aliphatic chain. The stability in hanks buffer and DMEM with or without FBS was followed by HPLC. The cytotoxicity against keratinocytes was evaluated by MTT assay. The antioxidant capacity was determined by using the fluorescent probe DCF-DA. The effect on enzyme activity was evaluated towards tyrosinase, collagenase, and elastase enzymes by colorimetric assays. MIC and MBC values were obtained against reference strains and against multidrug-resistant isolates. Results: In physiological conditions, cy3glc−fatty acid derivatives are more stable and may be converted to the native anthocyanin. The 5 conjugates showed lower antioxidant capacity and enzymatic inhibitory activities in comparison to the anthocyanin precursor. However, concerning the antibacterial activity, the insertion of a fatty acid chain sprouted the antibacterial activity, showing a clear biphasic effect and a more effective effect on Gram-positive bacteria. Conclusions: Cy3glc-C10 was the most effective compound considering the antimicrobial activity, although a general reduction was observed among the other activities evaluated. This work prompt further assays with a different panoply of derivatives ranging other features including saturation vs. unsaturation, even vs. odd carbon content and linear vs. branched.

Nowadays every company has been faced with a business competition that requires the company to survive and be superior to its competitors. One strategy used by many companies is to use information technology to run their business processes. The use of information technology would require a storage which commonly referred to as a database to store and process data into useful information for the company. However, it was found that the greater the amount of data in the database, then the speed of the resulting process will decrease because the time needed to access the data will be much longer. The long process of data can cause a decrease in the company’s performance and the length of time needed to make decisions so that this can be a challenge to achieve the company’s competitive advantage. In this study performed an analysis of technique to improve the performance of the database system used by the company to perform tuning on SQL Server 2008 database physically. The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of the database used by speeding up the time it takes when doing query processing. The research methodology used was the method of analysis such as literature studies, analysis of the process and the workings of tuning tools that already exist in SQL Server 2008, and evaluation of applications that have been created, and also tuning methods that include query optimization and create index. The results obtained from this study is an evaluation of the physical application tuning tools that can integrate database functionality of other tuning tools such as SQL Profiler and Database Tuning Advisor.
