SummaryReintroduction projects usually attempt to re-establish a self-sustaining population of endangered species within their historical ranges through the release of captive-bred individuals into the wild. We studied the breeding biology and nesting success of a reintroduced population of Crested Ibis Nipponia nippon in Ningshan County on the south slope of the Qinling Mountains of Shaannxi Province, China. From May 2007 to October 2011, 56 captive-bred individuals, composed of 26 females and 30 males, were released into the area and monitored using radio-telemetry. The average age of individuals at release was 5.2 ± 2.5 years for females and 6.4 ± 2.9 years for males. Mean clutch size was 3.14±1.06 (range 1-5). Mean number of fledglings per active nest was 1.57 ± 1.03 and mean number of fledglings per successful nest was 2.00 ± 0.87. Most of the fledglings survived to complete their post-fledging dispersal. Mean annual survival rate was 0.552 ± 0.064 for all released birds, 0.815 ± 0.054 for breeders, and 0.515 ± 0.058 for first year fledglings. The average number of young produced/year/pair was 1.57 ± 1.03 and the growth rate (λ) of the reintroduced population was 1.2193. We confirmed that starvation and predation by King Rat Snake Elaphe carinata were the main causes of death of released individuals, nestlings and fledglings. This is the first attempt to reintroduce captive-bred Crested Ibis to former natural habitat. The ability of captive-bred ibis to survive and breed successfully bodes well for future releases of this and other endangered species.

Over the past two decades, natural history collections (NHCs) have played an increasingly prominent role in global change research, but they have still greater potential, especially for the most diverse group of animals on Earth: insects. Here, we review the role of NHCs in advancing our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary responses of insects to recent global changes. Insect NHCs have helped document changes in insects' geographical distributions, phenology, phenotypic and genotypic traits over time periods up to a century. Recent work demonstrates the enormous potential of NHCs data for examining insect responses at multiple temporal, spatial and phylogenetic scales. Moving forward, insect NHCs offer unique opportunities to examine the morphological, chemical and genomic information in each specimen, thus advancing our understanding of the processes underlying species’ ecological and evolutionary responses to rapid, widespread global changes. <p>The past two thousand years is a key interval for climate science. This period encompasses both the era of human-induced global warming and a much longer interval when changes in Earth’s climate were governed principally by natural drivers and unforced variability. Since 2009, the Past Global Changes (PAGES) 2k Network has brought together hundreds of scientists from around the world to reconstruct and understand the climate of the Common Era using open and collaborative approaches to palaeoclimate science, including virtual meetings. The third phase of the network will end in December 2021. Here we highlight some key outputs of PAGES 2k and present the major themes and scientific questions emerging from recent surveys of the community. We explore how these might boost a new phase of PAGES 2k or a successor project(s). This year we will further reach out to the community through Town Hall consultations, vEGU and other meetings, and a PAGES 2k global webinar series. The aim of these activities is to foster development of post-2021 community-led PAGES initiatives that connect past and present climate.</p>

Abstract Chlamydia spp. are a group of obligate intracellular pathogens causing a number of diseases in animals and humans. Avian chlamydiosis (AC), caused by Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) as well as new emerging C. avium, C. gallinacea and C. ibidis, have been described in nearly 500 avian species worldwidely. The Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon) is a world endangered avian species with limited population and vulnerable for various infections. To get a better understanding of the prevalence of Chlamydia spp. in the endangered Crested Ibis, faecal samples were collected and analysed. The results confirmed that 20.20% (20/99) of the faecal samples were positive for Chlamydiaceae and were identified as C. ibidis with co-existence of C. psittaci in one of the 20 positive samples. In addition, ompA sequence of C. psittaci obtained in this study was classified into the provisional genotype Matt116, while that of C. ibidis showed high genetic diversity, sharing only 77% identity with C. ibidis reference strain 10-1398/6. We report for the first time the presence of C. ibidis and C. psittaci in the Crested Ibis, which may indicate a potential threat to the endangered birds and should be aware of the future protection practice.

Abstract. This PAGES (Past Global Changes) 2k (climate of the past 2000 years working group) special issue of Climate of the Past brings together the latest understanding of regional change and impacts from PAGES 2k groups across a range of proxies and regions. The special issue has emerged from a need to determine the magnitude and rate of change of regional and global climate beyond the timescales accessible within the observational record. This knowledge also plays an important role in attribution studies and is fundamental to understanding the mechanisms and environmental and societal impacts of recent climate change. The scientific studies in the special issue reflect the urgent need to better understand regional differences from a truly global view around the PAGES themes of “Climate Variability, Modes and Mechanisms”, “Methods and Uncertainties”, and “Proxy and Model Understanding”.
