First finding of Sophonia orientalis (Matsumura) in the Azores

Over recent years, new rare minerals have been discovered in the alkaline rocks of the Ukrainian Shield. Agpaitic varieties of alkaline magmatic and metasomatic rocks turned out to be especially abundant in rare minerals. Numerous findings are related to alkaline metasomatites which are considered to be fenites and apofenite albitites of the Dmytrivka quarry. It is well known primarily by the presence of various accessory (Nb, REE, and Zr) minerals, as well as silicate and oxide minerals that are rare for Ukraine. The most common albite microcline fenites of this quarry are characterized by rare-earth mineralization, whereas the concentration of REE decreases in apofenite albitites and Zr and Nb increase. New rare minerals were also found in the essentially albite rock with astrophyllite, alkaline pyroxene and amphibole of the Malatersa massif and agpaitic phonolites of the Oktyabrsky massif. In the rocks of the mentioned massifs and occurrences of alkaline rocks the most interesting are the findings of the perraultite — jinshajiangite series. They were found in three points of the Azov area and include 1) perraultite and jinshajiangite in the alkaline metasomatites of the Dmytrivka quarry; 2) only perraultite in agpaitic phonolites of the Oktyabrsky massif (Kam’yana gully); 3) jinshajiangite in a veined albite rock among the gabbro of the Malatersa massif. Baotite and minerals of the hejtmanite — bafertisite series were also found in the metasomatites of the Dmytrivka quarry. The latter belong to intermediate varieties in terms of MnO (10-17 wt.%) and FeO (10-17 wt.%) which distinguishes them from Fe-rich bafertisite from other regions. A silicate mineral with high content of Na, Zr, Mn and elevated Ti and Nb is rarely observed as small inclusions in the kupletskite grains from alkaline metasomatite of the Dmytrivka quarry. According to the chemical composition it was previously diagnosed as janhaugite. Tainiolite was found in some occurrences of alkaline metasomatites in the Azov region. In addition small aggregates of the REE-enriched epidote were found in fenites of the Kaplany village, which is probably the first finding in Ukraine. Two new Zr minerals have been found in the aegirine syenites of the Korsun-Novomyrhorod pluton: elpidite and mineral with a high content of Y2O3 (13-14 wt.%) (Y-hagatalite ?).

Three species of true bugs (Heteroptera), Blepharidopterus angulatus, Phytocoris nowickyi and Scolopostethus thomsoni, new for the Krasnoyarsk Territory, were found in the Western Sayan Mountains. Two species, Drymus sylvaticus and Odontoscelis fuliginosa, are recorded in the Tyva Republic for the first time; this is the first finding of the genus Drymus in the region.

Abstract Background Ptaquiloside (PTA), caudatoside (CAU) and ptesculentoside (PTE) are carcinogenic illudane glycosides found in bracken ferns (Pteridium spp.) world-wide. The environmentally mobile PTA entails both acute and chronic toxicity. A comparable risk might be associated with the structurally similar CAU and PTE. It is of great health concern if these compounds are present in drinking water, however, it is currently unknown if these compounds can detected in wells in bracken-dominated regions. This study investigates the presence of PTA, CAU, PTE, and their corresponding hydrolysis products pterosins B (PtB), A (PtA) and G (PtG) in water wells in Denmark, Sweden and Spain. Water samples from a total of 77 deep groundwater wells (40–100 m) and shallow water wells (8–40 m) were collected and preserved in the field, pre-concentrated in the laboratory and analysed by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). Results Deep groundwater wells contained neither illudane glycosides nor their pterosins. However, seven private shallow wells contained at least one of the illudane glycosides and/or pterosins at concentrations up to 0.27 µg L−1 (PTA), 0.75 µg L−1 (CAU), 0.05 µg L−1 (PtB), 0.03 µg L−1 (PtA) and 0.28 µg L−1 (PtG). This is the first finding of illudane glycosides and pterosins in drinking water wells. Conclusions Detected concentrations of illudane glycosides in some of investigated wells exceeded the suggested maximum tolerable concentrations of PTA, although they were used for drinking water purpose. Contaminated wells were shallow with neutral pH and lower electric conductivity compared to deep groundwater wells with no illudane glycosides nor pterosins.

Recently q-breathers - time-periodic solutions which localize in the space of normal modes and maximize the energy density for some mode vector q0 - were obtained for finite nonlinear lattices. We scale these solutions to arbitrarily large lattices in various lattice dimensions. We study the scaling consequence for previously obtained analytical estimates of the localization length of q-breathers for β-FPU and α-FPU lattices. The first finding is that the degree of localization depends only on intensive quantities and is size independent. Secondly, a critical wave vector km is identified, which depends on one effective nonlinearity parameter, q-breathers minimize the localization length at k0 = km and completely delocalize in the limit k0 → 0, π.

ABSTRACT The ermG gene was first found in the soil bacterium Bacillus sphaericus. More recently, it was found in several human intestinal Bacteroides species. We report here the first finding of ermG genes in gram-positive bacteria isolated from porcine feces and from under-barn manure pits used to store porcine wastes. The porcine ermG sequences were identical to the sequence of the B. sphaericus ermG gene except that six of the seven ermG-containing strains contained an insertion sequence element insertion in the C-terminal end of the gene. The porcine ermG genes were found in three different gram-positive genera, an indication that it is possible that the gene is being spread by horizontal gene transfer. A segment of a Bacteroides conjugative transposon that carries an ermG gene cross-hybridized with DNA from six of the seven porcine isolates, but the restriction patterns in the porcine strains were different from that of the Bacteroides conjugative transposon.

Abstract In 2017, an expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the University of Rzeszów (Poland) carried out excavations on a hillfort belonging to the Scythian cultural circle (its forest-steppe variant) in Chotyniec, in south-eastern Poland. The hillfort is the central and most important point of a large settlement cluster, which is the furthest north-western enclave of this cultural circle. In an excavated cult object – the so-called ‘zolnik’ – we made an interesting discovery. Here we show this unique finding for the first time: a Greek wine amphora, from the beginning of the sixth century BC. We were able to explore and reconstruct it almost entirely. Amphora is the only artefact of this type found in the present Polish borders. The amphora was subjected to archaeometric research with the use of PLM, SEM/EDS, TXRF and ToF SIMS. The massive fabric was made of high calcium clay enriched in quartz and volcanic lithoclasts. The lack of chromium and nickel among trace elements makes the vessel different from the amphoras from the Eastern Meditteranean analysed so far, suggesting a specific workshop. Red painting was executed with very fine grained iron compounds predominantly based on aluminosilicates, enriched in phosphorus. Obviously, since it is associated with the presence of Scythians in Eastern Europe, it simultaneously delimits (geography-wise) the borders of Greek influence.

A new occurrence of igneous rocks with an orbicular structure was discovered by the authors in West Antarctica. The place of finding is Hovgaard Island in the Wilhelm Archipelago located near the Graham Coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Until now, not a single manifestation of these rare rocks was known in this region. Usually orbicular rocks are formed under the condition of local "coincidence" of many geological and petrogenetic factors. The study of the geological position, texture features and mineral composition of the orbicular rocks on Hovgaard Island was carried out in order to create their primary petrographic description. It was found that orbiculites are exposed in a small area, about 200 m2, in the field of amphibolized gabbroids and their intrusive breccias. The occurrence and textures of the orbiculites indicate that their crystallization occurred at the hypabyssal depth. Probably, this occurrence is a marginal facies of a small gabbroid intrusion, some parts of which are exposed on the adjacent coastal areas of Hovgaard Island. The studies performed have shown that the orbiculites of Hovgaard Island belong to the rarest petrographic representatives of these rocks namely orbicular gabbroids. In their petrographic feature, they differ markedly from the famous French napoleonites (corsites) exposed on the Corsica Island. The mineral composition of the orbicules is represented by calcium plagioclase (An88-97), hornblende (#Mg = 0.77-0.81), clinopyroxene (Wo48-50En43-47Fs5-8), spinel (Sp62-72Hrc14-20Mt12-17), actinolite, phlogopite, chlorite, magnetite and apatite. The interorbicular matrix has a gabbroid composition and a porphyritic texture. It differs from orbicules in somewhat less calcium plagioclase and less magnesian hornblende, as well as in the absence of spinel. In view of the rarity of orbicular gabbroids and the specificity of the described manifestation, it is proposed that the orbicular gabbro on Hovgaard Island be considered as a new petrographic variety of the gabbroid family. The name "hovgaardite" is recommended for the name of this variety of orbicular gabbro.
