American dynastic business families as descent groups constitute a category of social organization with which anthropologists have been traditionally familiar, but in the unlikely setting of a complex, bureaucratized society. This paper examines aspects of such groups and argues that law has been a critical organizational resource in their development. Law does not merely impinge at times on family concerns, but becomes an integral dimension of extended family relations in the arrangements for perpetuating collective wealth as business capital, and in distributing individual entitlements to that wealth among descendants. A general model of family/ business formations is presented, supported by a comparative discussion of two dynastic families of Galveston, Texas.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how family businesses (FBs) build their collective identity through transgenerational narratives. The authors examine the processes through which organizational meanings are socially constructed through narratives about individuals who are closely linked to the organizations (and their family). Design/methodology/approach Based on qualitative research, the authors study a 180-year old Spanish Pharmaceutical FB. Using longitudinal data, the authors analyze the narratives of six family members and two non-family executives. The authors use open-ended questions to allow interviewees to elaborate their own stories, following previous studies using extended narratives that leave the stage to the narrator. Findings Findings based on the stories of the eight interviewees (voice) suggest that the FB identity was initiated by the founder’s way to grow the business (fictionality). In turn the family shaped the identity of the FB, being reshaped by the stories arising from next generations’ entry into the business (reflexivity). While the FB identity reflects that of the owners, this identity is enduring but dynamic (temporality), not only shaped by the business family behind, but also conditioned by the environment. Originality/value The authors contribute to the growing literature adopting a narrative method to study phenomena in FBs. Thanks to the richness of the empirical material, a narrative method is particularly suited – and novel – for understanding collective identity, a crucial organizational resource that is closely linked to leadership in the FB.

This study analyses family business continuity from founder generation to the 2nd generation in terms of succession in the context of evolutionary economics. Two literature bases; family business succession and evolutionary thinking in organisational and economic change, are reviewed and combined to provide insights to understand the nature of family business succession. Operation of the key evolutionary forces — variation, selection, retention and struggle — in family business succession are illustrated. Regarding variation, there is a concern for understanding the importance of having enough diversity within the family firm, since this diversity of routines and competences comprises the pool of variation from which to select when the environment changes. With regards to selection, there is a concern for understanding the risk of selection bias easily rooted in the family firm culture: are some variations favoured in the selection of operating, investment and search routines because of family relations, emotions and values, including decisions on who will succeed and who will own the firm in the future. Elaboration and investigation of these concepts may help to identify special characteristics of the "family firm species" that are either beneficial or risky for the survival in the evolutionary struggle.

Marriage is the most fundamental social institution in human society. Applying the comparative method, this paper aims at analyzing within the scope of marital and familial aspects of Chinese and Western culture, revealing specifically the underlying causes of the differences demonstrated in traditional Chinese and Western marriage culture. The paper finds that behind the apparent ritual practices, China and the West have different principles and priorities rooted in their ideological distinctions, namely, the differences in ethical foundations as well as family values. Chinese people, under the overwhelming influence of Confucian doctrines, regard parents as the sole authority in marriage, and ancestor worship has become the ultimate goal in the whole process, urging couples to conform to an extended family. In contrast, their western counterparts give priority to religious significance, and marriage is viewed as a divine unity of the two, which can be independent from large family relations thus forming a nuclear family of their own.

The family businesses constitute the base of global economies. They provide contributions to economy and sectors with their assets and activities. Their reaching to plan, program and objectives occur through the sharing of experience, knowledge and accumulation. Their adaptation to domestic and global markets is the characteristic separating the definition, family businesses from other businesses. In this study, the advantages and disadvantages of this situation, management forms, institutionalism concept and its stages and elements of institutionalism, institutionalism stages in family businesses, problems preventing institutionalism, institutionalism of family relations that family constitution, board of directors, family council, inheritance plan, emergency situation plan and conflict management are explained and effects of family individuals over institutionalism, the general characteristics of institutionalized family businesses are defined and a practice regarding the issue of “Institutionalism of Family Relations”, which was performed in a family business through observation, conversation and interview, which was founded in Istanbul in year 1989 and carrying activities in textile sector over shirt, short and pant manufacturing were given place.  Literature review regarding family business were performed in this study and the concepts and theoretical information related with the subject were explained and combining the theory and practice, knowledge accumulation and experience sharing through a practice performed through observation, conservation and interview made with the management of a family business were provided and they were explained in our study with an academic language.

OBJECTIVE: This study focused on the role of extended family in mitigating the stress experienced by parents of children with autism and the possible challenges of involving them, especially in modern Nigerian society. The study identified the sources of stress for parents of children with autism, and considered location and family size factors in stress experienced by parents, the role of the extended family in mitigating the stress and the challenges that may inhibit the involvement of the extended family.  METHOD: The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and was carried out in South East, Nigeria. All parents and guardians of children with autism in the three special needs schools that cater for children with autism in the two selected states were used for the study. Data was collected using a self-report questionnaire with 36 items to elicit information on the sources of stress for parents and the role of the extended family in mitigating the stress. A semi-structured 26 items interview schedule adapted from Smithfield’s (2011) parents of children with autism questions covering the child's behaviour, parent's feelings, and role of the extended family was also used to generate firsthand information on the issues raised and to complement data collected through the self-report questionnaire. There was a researcher observation guide for monitoring progress in the study. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while regression analysis, t-test and Analysis of variance were used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS: The findings revealed that parents of children with autism experience stress that is hinged basically on the behaviour of the children. Family size does not influence parents’ stress experience but location does.  Some parents receive child care and/or financial help sometimes from extended family members. CONCLUSION: Parents of children with autism face a lot of stress that is hinged basically on the behaviour of the children. Some of the rural parents, however, have the opportunity of getting help sometimes from extended family members since special need schools are not located in their area or even nearby. The extended family relations sometimes offer financial help but from all indications, the modern urbanization has really eroded their help. Family size does not influence parents’ stress experience and role of extended family but location does.

In order to characterize the fishermen of ornamental fish from the region of Tefé, the records of the monitoring program of shipments of ornamental fish from Tefé port were used. The permits issued by the local IBAMA office were also consulted in this survey. After which, representatives of four, out of ten ornamental fishermen groups were interviewed, encompassing 35 families directly involved in the activity at the area. Here the typical ornamental fisherman from Tefé region is described his its main aspects, such as origin, civil status, age, how he learned his skills and how he relates with the formal association of fishermen in the region, the “Colônia de Pesca de Tefé” (Z4). It is also analised the forms of social organization for the activity and the sharing of profits, where the importance of family relations are described and emphasized. Finally the most important variations of this type of fisheries are described, with their methodologies and the most important ornamental fish species targeted.
