The supplementation of a phytogenic feed additive (PFA) characterised by menthol and anethole was evaluated at three levels on broiler growth performance, nutrient digestibility, biochemical parameters, total antioxidant capacity of plasma, breast and thigh meat as well as on the relative gene expression of immune-related biomarkers. A total of 225 1-day-old male Cobb-500 were assigned into three treatments with five replicates of 15 chicks each. Wheat-soybean meal basal diets were formulated according to a three-phase (i.e. starter, grower and finisher) feeding program. Dietary treatments were: no PFA, PFA at 100 mg/kg diet and PFA at 150 mg/kg diet. Feed and water were available ad libitum. Performance parameters were monitored weekly and all other biological responses were determined at 42 days of broiler age. Increasing PFA level increased (P = 0.044) bodyweight gain at finisher period, decreased quadratically (P = 0.035) overall feed intake, and quadratically improved (P = 0.024) overall feed conversion ratio. Moreover, increasing PFA level increased plasma total antioxidant capacity linearly (P = 0.001) whereas linearly decreased (P = 0.005) triglyceride concentration. Thigh meat cholesterol decreased linearly (P = 0.016) with increasing PFA level. Expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-2 in caecal tonsils increased quadratically (P = 0.046) with increasing PFA level. In conclusion, PFA inclusion at 100 mg/kg diet affected positively performance whereas a stronger improvement mainly in plasma total antioxidant capacity and triglyceride as well as in meat cholesterol was noted for the 150 mg/kg diet level. Inclusion of PFA resulted in increasing pro-inflammatory biomarker IL-2 at local caecal level.

Abstract A total of 168 one-day old broilers (average BW 46.4 ± 0.6 g) were selected to determine effects of natural capsaicin extract (NCE) as a substitute for chlortetracycline (CTC) on performance, antioxidant capacity, immune function and meat quality of broilers [Founded by NSFC (31772612)]. Broilers were randomly allotted into 3 dietary treatments (n = 7) including a corn-soybean meal basal diet (CON), a basal diet + 75 mg/kg CTC (CTC), and a basal diet + 80 mg/kg NCE (NCE). The experiment contained phase 1 (day 1 to 21) and 2 (day 22 to 42). Compared with CON, broilers from NCE showed higher average daily gain at all stages (P < 0.05). On day 42, organic matter, crude protein and gross energy digestibilities of broilers from NCE were higher than those from the other two groups (P < 0.05). Higher percentage of bursa of Fabricius was observed in broilers fed NCE diets compared with CON (P < 0.05). Trypsin and lipase activities in the pancreas of broilers from NCE were higher than those from CON (P < 0.05). Breast muscle of broilers fed NCE diets showed lower L* values compared with CON (P < 0.05). Broilers from NCE also showed higher levels of serum total antioxidant capacity, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, lower levels of interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α compared with broilers offered CON diets (P < 0.05). Compared with CON, lower concentrations of serum urea-N, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol, higher growth hormone level were observed in broilers fed NCE diets (P < 0.05). In conclusion, supplementing 80 mg/kg of NCE to diets could improve growth performance, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant and immune function, and meat quality of broilers. Moreover, broilers fed NCE diets exhibited similar growth performance and health status to those offered chlortetracycline (CTC) diets.

Abstract The study was conducted to assess the effect of black pepper (BP) supplementation on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal microbial, fecal gas emission, and meat quality of finishing pigs. A total of 180 crossbred [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] finishing pigs with average initial body weight (BW) of 53.72 ± 1.42 kg were used in 10-week trial and allotted to 6 dietary treatments (6 replications pens/treatment with 5 pigs per pen). The dietary treatments were: CON (basal diet), TRT1- CON + 0.025% BP, TRT2- CON + 0.05% BP, TRT3- CON + 0.1% BP, TRT4- CON + 0.2% BP, TRT5- CON + 0.4% BP. A linear increase (P = 0.0380, 0.0061) in body weight gain (BWG) and average daily gain (ADG) were observed respectively, during the overall trial in pigs fed BP supplemented diet compared to control. The dietary supplementation of BP showed a linear increase (P=0.0065) in gain and feed ratio (G: F) at week 10. However, there were no significant results observed on average daily feed intake (ADFI) during the overall experiment. The total tract digestibility of dry matter (DM) was linearly improved (P=0.0531) in BP treatment groups compared to control. In addition, BP diet supplementation had linearly increased fecal Lactobacillus counts (P=0.0482) and decreased E. coli counts (P=0.0306) in pigs at week 10. Furthermore, NH3, methyl mercaptans, and acetic acid was linearly decreased (P=0.0227, 0.0555,0.0541) in pigs fed BP supplementation compare to control. The inclusion of BP supplementation in pigs diet had linearly increased (P=0.0146) the backfat thickness at week 10. Thus, we concluded that BP supplementation had positively enhanced the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal microbial, fecal gas emission, and meat quality of finishing pigs.
