This paper seeks to contribute to the research on the role of the family in the educational decision-making of young people by highlighting two overlooked areas of study: vocational education and the role of siblings. It explores young, mainly working-class Finnish 15- to 17-year-olds’ future expectations and decision-making processes concerning the choice between the academic and vocational tracks by drawing on interviews with the young participants of targeted support programmes and their parents. The aim of the paper is to shed light both on how parents try to influence their children's post-school choices and on young people's perceptions of the influence that parents and older brothers and sisters had on their aspirations towards vocational education. The paper demonstrates how horizons for action and educational choices are influenced by family traditions and advice, but that the pieces of advice dispensed by parents and siblings are not necessarily in congruence with each other. The familial suggestions work as a point of reference which is acknowledged and reflected on in the young people's process of mapping and recognising their own preferences. The paper suggests that while the goals of parents and older siblings would not necessarily be upward mobility, but rather to help young people to make a decent choice within a sector corresponding to their own, it is important to acknowledge their influence as a resource valued by many young people.

The role actors in implementation support the effort of Islamization of Education by integrating Islamic education concept into regular basic education in North Aceh district. This study investigates how this coalition network plays their roles in succeeding the implementation of the Islamization education concept at the school level through advocating cross-sectorial actors within the regency so that the integration concept can be generated into district regulation and can be implemented at the lower level by implementing agencies including schools. Besides, the current study also seeks some issues and challenges the coalition face during the process of concept integration and advocacy. The findings show that there are some constraints on both contexts of policy and practical level, especially, regarding the resource sharing availability. Responding to this situation, Dayah Education Office, Scholars Consultative Assembly, North Aceh Representative Council (DPRK), Mass media, and other education stakeholders suggest the integration can be performed by adopting models and curriculum implemented in Dayah education since Aceh province has special right to implement education system respectfully to the local characteristics and local wisdom in Aceh.

As a proof, statistics released by the Syarie Lawyers Association of Malaysia recorded an increase in the number of converts up to 76,663 people all over Malaysia in 2000 until 2009. There are various factors that motivated these people to Islam. For example, some are impressed with the presentation by the preacher that approached Islam to this group. However, the role of management and replenishment program after conversion of an individual to Islam as an attraction to this group can not be set aside. Abstract: This paper examines the key legitimating role of communication and the media, and the role of taming-labour, in constructing the Ontario neo-liberal hegemonic project in 1995. Media-content analysis and examination of the communication strategies of the Ontario government in the 1996 public-service strike show that the government relied on constructing the perception of a hegemonic crisis and framing labour as oppositional to the public interest of resolving the crisis. The government’s general strategy of quick-attack communications offensives curtailed media and opposition scrutiny, increasing the likelihood of policy success and media dependence on its framing of issues. A strong challenge to the government led by labour and social justice groups failed in the face of state public relations, media silence, and internal dissension. Examination of a second strike in 2002 suggests that even without a crisis, the government continued its attack on labour.

The role of speech-language therapists (SLTs) in schools in South Africa needs to be revisited based on the changing educational needs in the country. Th is article builds on a paper by Kathard et al. (2011), which discussed the changing needs of the country with regard to the role of SLTs working in schools. South African policy changes indicated a shift from supporting the child to supporting the teacher, but also place more emphasis on the support of all learners in literacy in an eff ort to address past inequities. Th is paper addresses several of the questions that emerged from Kathard et al. and explores the collaborative roles played by SLTs on four levels in the education context. Collaboration at the learner level (level 1) focuses on prevention and support, whereas collaboration at the teacher level (level 2) is described in terms of training, mentoring, monitoring and consultation. Collaboration can also occur at the district level (level 3), where the focus is mainly on the development and implementation of support programmes for teachers in areas of literacy and numeracy. Collaboration at the level of national and provincial education (level 4) is key to all other roles, as it impacts on policy. Th is last level is the platform to advocate for the employment of SLTs in schools. Such new roles and responsibilities have important implications for the preparation of future SLTs. Suggestions for curricular review and professional development are discussed. It is proposed that SASLHA responds to the changes by developing a position statement on the roles and responsibilities of SLTs in schools.

The history of policies affecting individuals with intellectual disabilities has received attention from social historians interested in gender and family, from the emerging discipline of disability studies, and from scholars interested in the evolving role of eugenic arguments and medical genetics in American life. That history has received less systematic study from the community of policy analysts and scholars traditionally concerned with welfare, poverty, and public health. This is unfortunate because the history of policies affecting intellectual disability offers at least three significant lessons.

Hospices have utilized volunteers in their work and mission in many ways over the past 50 years. Although there are a small number of positively evaluated projects, there remains little research which really proves the worth and effectiveness of utilising volunteers to support the psychological, social, and physical needs of those living with dying. This chapter introduces the challenges faced by hospices due to an historic lack of well organized services underpinned with effective training and support structures, as well as a lack of focus on successful strategic direction and the development of appropriate policies and procedures. The work of one hospice is highlighted; focussing on the need for change and critical examination as well as the development of training and support programmes. New developments such as supporting communities to accept their responsibilities to care for vulnerable people coming to the end of life are also presented.
