In this paper, a constraint Genetic Algorithm is used for the purpose of mooring pattern optimization. The Genetic Algorithm is applied through a mathematical formulation which is introduced to define a typical mooring system optimization problem. The mathematical formulation is used in a case study on a spread moored crane barge, operating in the vicinity of a jacket type platform, in order to minimize its surge motions towards the platform. For this purpose, a set of criteria regarding clearances between anchors and seabed preinstalled facilities (pipelines), and also between the crane barge and the jacket platform are presented and considered. An automatic process of repetitive analyses implementing a MATLAB code as an interface between the Genetic Algorithm and a mooring system analysis program is used, and an optimum solution is resulted by performing 4000 quasi-dynamic analyses in time domain. The effectiveness of the Genetic Algorithm in leading to an optimum mooring system pattern is studied and it is shown that using a proper formulation of the problem, the Genetic Algorithm can be a very useful tool for finding an optimum pattern for mooring systems in fields with constraints on anchor locations and vessel motions.

This chapter presents a generalised framework for multi-objective optimisation of video CODECs for use in off-line, on-demand applications. In particular, an optimization scheme is proposed to determine the optimum coding parameters for a H.264 AVC video codec in a memory and bandwidth constrained environment, which minimises codec complexity and video distortion. The encoding/decoding parameters that have a significant impact on the performance of the codec are initially obtained through experimental analysis. A mathematical formulation by means of regression is subsequently used to associate these parameters with the relevant objectives and define a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) problem. Solutions to the optimization problem are reached through a Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II). It is shown that the proposed framework is flexible on the number of objectives that can jointly be optimized. Furthermore, any of the objectives can be included as constraints depending on the requirements of the services to be supported. Practical use of the proposed framework is described using a case study that involves video content transmission to a mobile hand.

The shortage of material and environmental legislations have encouraged car manufacturers to recycle used material in end of life vehicles (ELVs), reverse logistics are essential to the concerns of the automotive supply chain. In this research, a profit model multi-echelon reverse logistics network including collection center, shredder center and recycling center is developed to recycle automotive parts. The work was continued by illustrating empirical application in wiring harness manufacturer that would like to recycle wire harnesses and extract copper. With regards to the complexity of the reverse logistics network, traditional method cannot be implemented for solving them. Thus, an evolutionary algorithm based genetic algorithm (GA) is applied as a solution methodology to solve mixed integer linear programming model and find the optimum solution. The results emphasize the efficiency of the modeling and solving method so that in the case study the company gained more than 27 thousand dollars through the establishment of reverse logistics for recycling copper.

Facility location-allocation problems have various applications in private and public sectors. A capacitated p-median problem is considered in this work which is computationally NP-Hard. The primary goal of this paper was to determine a set of p-facilities location in which all demand points are allocated and its average distance traveled from the customers’ location to the selected p-facilities is minimized. In addition, the model also considered supplier’s allocation for p facilities. A real world case study has been addressed, and genetic algorithm which consists of crossover and mutation operators was proposed in order to solve the problem. Computational results for different values of p were generated, and finally the optimum solution based on minimum cost was reported.

An optimization study with kinetostatic analysis is performed on hybrid seven-bar press mechanism. This study is based on previous studies performed on planar hybrid seven-bar linkage. Dimensional synthesis is performed, and optimum link lengths for the mechanism are found. Optimization study is performed by using genetic algorithm (GA). Genetic Algorithm Toolbox is used with Optimization Toolbox in MATLAB®. The design variables and the constraints are used during design optimization. The objective function is determined and eight precision points are used. A seven-bar linkage system with two degrees of freedom is chosen as an example. Metal stamping operation with a dwell is taken as the case study. Having completed optimization, the kinetostatic analysis is performed. All forces on the links and the crank torques are calculated on the hybrid system with the optimized link lengths

This article outlines methods to facilitate the assessment of the impact of electric vehicle charging on distribution networks at planning stage and applies them to a case study. As network planning is becoming a more complex task, an approach to automated network planning that yields the optimal reinforcement strategy is outlined. Different reinforcement measures are weighted against each other in terms of technical feasibility and costs by applying a genetic algorithm. Traditional reinforcements as well as novel solutions including voltage regulation are considered. To account for electric vehicle charging, a method to determine the uptake in equivalent load is presented. For this, measured data of households and statistical data of electric vehicles are combined in a stochastic analysis to determine the simultaneity factors of household load including electric vehicle charging. The developed methods are applied to an exemplary case study with Norwegian low-voltage networks. Different penetration rates of electric vehicles on a development path until 2040 are considered.

This paper discusses a case study of a design and evaluation of a change management system at a large Telecommunications Corporation. The design and evaluation were done using the facilitated genetic algorithm (a parallel design method) and user decision style analysis. During the facilitated genetic algorithm the design team followed the procedure of the genetic algorithm. Usability was evaluated by applying user decision style analysis to the designed system. The design is compared with an existing system and with one designed by an analyst. The change management system designed by the facilitated genetic algorithm took less time to design and decision style analysis indicated it would be easier to use than the other two systems.

Currently, ocean wave energy is a novel means of electricity generation that is projected to potentially serve as a primary energy source in coastal areas. However, for wave energy converters (WECs) to be applicable on a scale that allows for grid implementation, these devices will need to be placed in close relative proximity to each other. From what’s been learned in the wind industry of the U.S., the placement of these devices will require optimization considering both cost and power. However, current research regarding optimized WEC layouts only considers the power produced. This work explores the development of a genetic algorithm (GA) that will create optimized WEC layouts where the objective function considers both the economics involved in the array’s development as well as the power generated. The WEC optimization algorithm enables the user to either constrain the number of WECs to be included in the array, or allow the algorithm to define this number. To calculate the objective function, potential arrays are evaluated using cost information from Sandia National Labs Reference Model Project, and power development is calculated such that WEC interaction affects are considered. Results are presented for multiple test scenarios and are compared to previous literature, and the implications of a priori system optimization for offshore renewables are discussed.

Piping design for ‘revamp’ projects in the process industry requires the retrieval of large amounts of ‘as-built’ data from existing process plant installations. Positional data with a high degree of accuracy are required. Photogrammetry, the science of measurement from photographs, was identified in Imperial Chemical Industries plc (ICI) as a suitable tool for information retrieval. The mathematical formulation enabling the definition of three-dimensional positions from photographic information is described. The process of using ICI's photogrammetric system for the definition of complete objects such as structures and pipes is illustrated. The need for specialized photogrammetric software for design purposes is explained. A case study describing how the photogrammetric system has been applied is described and graphical outputs from this exercise are shown. It is concluded that this particular photogrammetric system has proved to be a cost effective and accurate tool for the retrieval of ‘as-built’ information.
