The paper maps the value of case study in management research. In particular, it deals with the paradigmatic aspects of case study as a research strategy. In order to analyse the convergence and divergence on different dimensions of the case study research, I focus on three well-known methodology experts, namely Robert Yin, Sharan Merriam and Robert Stake. I argue that case study is a comprehensive research strategy. It has the capacity to embrace paradigm plurality representing both inductive and deductive strategies. Because of its epistemological, ontological and methodological flexibility case study has become one of the established research approaches in management. There is no fixed set of methods for the case study research. This depends on the ontological presuppositions of the researchers. The significance of the ontology becomes apparent depending on the nature of the case and the types of the research questions. As case study research is reflexive, flexible and context-specific, it allows emerging contexts to shape methods. That is why it can act as a bridge across the research paradigms. I then look at the considerable influence that the case study approach has on the management research, i.e., the role for case study in the research process. Because of its overarching role, multi-paradigmatic approach can be adopted under case study research. Case study research is, in practice a varied methodology with paradigmatic pluralism covering an array of research methods and techniques and different levels of analysis.

Some methodologists have pointed to similarities between experimental method and case study research in terms of design, theory testing and development. However, little is known about how these debates inform qualitative research rationales. The use of a sequential dual case study provided an opportunity to examine these issues and their impact on the unfolding research process. The interplay of inductive and deductive approaches was evident throughout in decisions determining the nature of the research enquiry.

Design-based case studies allow researchers to examine instructional innovations that are bounded by perspective, context, and time. Design-based case study is an approach that blends case study research with design-based research in order to more systematically examine the process and products of an intervention. This approach provides a framework for engaging in iterative cycles of data collection and analysis to determine if, how, and why goals of instructional innovations have been met. This chapter provides an overview of the design-based case study approach and responds to common concerns surrounding case study and design-based research and how design-based case studies address these concerns by building on the strengths of both approaches.

The reputation of case study research has grown as a research strategy for developing theories and as a method for investigating and understanding world complex issues. The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate how the case study research can add value to a research project. Case study research, although becoming increasingly popular is not adequately utilised in information science research. The chapter draws on the literature on case study research in various fields and uses examples to inform research in information science. Case study research have been used across a number of disciplines, particularly, in the social sciences, education and business to address real world problems. Many researchers tend to use case study research because of the numerous advantages it offers. For instance, the employment of multiple data collection instruments maximises the depth of information, which in turn increases transferability of the findings. Additionally, the use of multiple cases and multiple data collection instruments make generalisation easy and valid. Maximising generalisability of findings is the ultimate goal of research.

Indisputably, networking offers many benefits in business. However, at the same time, it may also restrict the freedom of its actors. The aim of the paper is to complement the knowledge on the benefits and delimitations of networking by a two-step process. Firstly, the actors’ aims for independency and associability in their business relations are examined and based on these aims, different tendencies for networking are found. Furthermore, the paper discusses the resource portfolios of actors, and searches linkages between the actors’ resources and their networking tendencies. The research question of the paper is: “How the resource portfolio of an actor correlates with its tendency to form networks?” Case study research is used as the research strategy. A group of Finnish biomass heating enterprises is studied as the case, and four groups with different networking tendencies are recognized and further assessed. The results provide evidence that the actors tend to form different networks which differ from each other by the power relations and the openness of sharing social capital. In addition, it is noted that the actors differ in their resource portfolios. That creates dissimilar motives for cooperation and networking which are well-reflected with the four networking types found in the study. Case study researchers have traditionally focused on micro-level analysis of a “bounded” case, yet this approach has come under methodological scrutiny in a world where phenomena are rarely isolated from globalization’s expansive reach. Social science and policy-oriented research in particular are nearly always subject to local and global histories as well as socio-cultural, political, and economic trends. Furthermore, the experience of individuals, organizations, and institutions are often tangled in interconnected webs of influence, such that a case study that does not trace these underlying relationships is likely to be analyzing only the tip of a phenomenological iceberg. Hence critical scholars call for the need to repurpose traditional case study research methods to embrace shifting contextual factors that surround a research project at multiple levels. Comparative case study methods answer this call by making socio-cultural and political analysis an explicit part of the research process. They expand the researcher’s methodological lens by advancing the analysis of processes across three axes: the horizontal (through distinct research sites), the vertical (through scales; e.g., local vs national) and the transversal (over time; e.g., historically). The methodology is particularly useful for social science research and policy studies, where complex interactions between actors and institutions are tied to socio-cultural, political, and economic contexts. Teacher education research is an area where comparative case studies can potentially contribute to policy formulation. Using the example of case study research on teacher education in India, the comparative case study methodology is shown to be an effective research tool. Through insights into the socio-cultural and political context surrounding pedagogical reform, case study research can generate corrective measures to improve policy effectiveness.

Data collection is a critical aspect of any research. To this point, it is very important that a researcher has a good understanding of why, where and how to collect data. Broadly speaking, there are two main research and data collection approaches; namely, quantitative and qualitative methodologies. These two approaches are used both in academia and professional domains. This study focuses on philosophical assumptions underpinning Information Systems (IS) research. The philosophical assumptions underlying interpretive, case study research tradition and approach implies a subjective epistemology and the ontological belief that reality is socially constructed. The study investigated the challenges of interpretive, case study research strategy and empirical techniques applied in the information systems discipline. This paper focuses on the realistic challenges that researchers face while conducting a qualitative, interpretive, case study, particularly during data collection.

It is the situational specificity or context of qualitative research that ensures the case study remains a methodological approach, inherently valuable in practice-based research. Since this is inherently complex and multifaceted by nature, being able to provide a means of systematically analysing and framing research investigations is pivotal to the credibility of research that can highlight and illuminate these specific contextual issues. This chapter provides a means by which researchers can begin to frame the complexity of phenomena they wish to investigate by deliberately determining its parameter or scope and then framing or binding this. Beyond these processes, an insight into the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data will be provided so that theoretical outcomes can be framed and posited as part of an active contribution to knowledge. The fact that case study can be posited as both methodology and method ensures its capacity to address the need of being able to undertake context-specific evaluatory research or the overall complexity.

This study aims to  examine and find out the implementation of Permendagri No. 113 of 2014 in Ngesrepbalong Village, Limbangan, Kendal Regency and  analyze the obstacles faced by village officials in its implementation.This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study research strategy. Data obtained through interviews and documentation studies.The results of the study show the Implementation of Permendagri No. 113 of 2014 in Ngesrepbalong Village can generally be seen from the following findings: Fund allocation is not appropriate in accordance with the provisions;  There is a discrepancy between the list of program activities that have been agreed upon in the village meeting with the details of the activities contained in the RKP table; There is an RKP that does not include a discussion on the evaluation of the previous year's financial use;  in the aspect of transparency, the Village Government has implemented it by informing the allocation of funds and the development of their use on information boards in the village office. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji dan mengetahui implementasi Permendagri No 113 tahun 2014 di Desa Ngesrepbalong Kecamatan Limbangan Kabupaten Kendal dan menganalisis kendala yang dihadapi aparatur desa dalam pelaksanaannya.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan strategi penelitian studi kasus. Data yang diperoleh melalui wawancara dan studi dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan Implementasi Permendagri No 113 tahun 2014 di Desa Ngesrepbalong dapat dilihat dari temuan berikut ini:  Pengalokasian dana tidak tepat sesuai dengan ketentuan; Adanya ketidaksesuaian antara daftar program kegiatan yang telah disepakai dalam musyawarah desa dengan rincian kegiatan yang ada dalam tabel RKP; Terdapat RKP yang tidak mencantumkan pembahasan mengenai evaluasi penggunaan keuangan tahun sebelumnya; pada aspek trasnparansi, Pemerintah Desa telah melaksanakannya dengan menginformasikan pengalokasian dana dan perkembangan penggunaannya pada papan informasi di kantor desa.
