apply to students with school attendance problems (SAPs). A school counselor adopted the rapid school return approach in a school-based behavioral consultation with parents of a 13-year-old Japanese male student who refused to attend school. After the parents implemented the approach, the student resumed his regular school attendance, which continued until the end of junior high school. The A–B design in a single case study was employed as the research design. Throughout the implementation of the approach, the findings indicated that: (a) school counselors should conduct behavioral consultation sessions with parents periodically; (b) school counselors and parents should discuss who is responsible for the escorting process; (c) school staff and school counselors should collect attendance accurate data of students with SAPs daily until the end of the academic year; and (d) school counselors should view SAPs as a persistent problem for students, which can relapse at certain points during compulsory school. This current case study suggests that behavioral consultation with parents of youth with SAPs can be effective in dealing with students who refuse to attend school and are unwilling to seek specialists’ help.

This qualitative study explores the perspectives and experiences of Black male student-athletes with particular focus on their interactions with school counselors. It draws on nine participants selected through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. The Black male participants were current or former student-athletes at the high school and Division I levels. We developed and analyzed the semistructured interview questions through the lens of critical race theory. Using deductive data analysis techniques, we identified key factors that appear to shape interactions between Black male student-athletes and school counselors, including the perception of the school counselor role, a village of support, and prior experiences with school counselors. The results of this study have implications for school counselor practice, policy, and research.

The authors interviewed a school counselor to determine her response to an armed hostage event in a classroom. They found that her primary interventions took place after the perpetrator had been taken into custody, through counseling students who had been in the room, contacting professionals from the school district and the local mental health facility for help, and coordinating these other professionals. Results are presented in light of the crisis intervention literature. Finally, implications for professional school counselors are discussed.

This paper presents the results of a study of drug-related cases seen by school counselors in four types of schools during a four month period. The overall counselor-contact rate was 3.1 per 1000 students, with the highest rates in Separate Schools (Roman Catholic). Most referrals were self-made, with junior high school referrals more likely than senior high to come from “professional” sources. More than one drug was involved in the majority of cases seen, cannabis being most frequently mentioned. Differences in drugs involved by type of school were found. Although there were differences between school types in treatment approaches, those most often used were individual rather than group-oriented. Questions raised by the findings are discussed.

School counselors are often called upon to develop and implement academic interventions. In this case study of one urban elementary school, a school counselor conducted a small group academic advisement intervention. The results suggest that integrating the activities into the elementary school counseling program can be an effective Response to Intervention (RTI) component that advances academic achievement and improves attendance and discipline issues. This article presents the impact of the intervention on student and parent attitudes toward school and future success and shares implications for school counselors.

The percentage of students educationally identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is on the rise and school counselors are called to serve this population. Social stories are recommended in the educational literature to address the social and behavioral challenges of students with ASD, but a need exists to examine social stories within the context of school counseling. In this article, the authors provide a case study of a school counselor-facilitated social story using an action research framework in order to illustrate the creation, implementation, and impact of social stories.

Chronic pain is a suffering which patients endure due to various injuries or condition and has a significant impact on the overall quality of life. Where traditional medicine fails to bring the desired results for the patient, use of acupuncture to manage chronic pain has been reported to have beneficial results. The current case report aims to report the positive effects of acupuncture in managing chronic pain through presentation of a single case. The patient had a four-week PT Program, seen twice a week for acupuncture (Bilateral BL 23BL25, GV4, GV 3, and bilateral LI4). The main outcome measures used were visual analogue scale, Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) and Oswesrty Low Back Disability Questionnaire. At the end of treatment, the patient had significant reduction in pain and improved outcomes thus supporting the use of acupuncture for pain management in chronic pain patients. The current case report affirms that acupuncture is both safe and effective in managing chronic pain and quality of life. Bilateral BL23, BL25, GV4, GV 3, and LI4 points used in the current case study has proven to be helpful in helping patient come off long-term pain medications.

School counselors are tasked with many activities, including demonstrating the effectiveness of interventions they use with students. The American School Counselor Association recommends that school counselors include assessment, appraisal, and evaluation of delivery and program management in their school counseling program. Single-case research design is a data collection and analysis strategy that can assist school counselors with this task. We developed the Impact of Intervention tool to provide school counselors a tool to streamline the data collection process.

Federal initiatives place school counselors at the forefront of increasing college access for students in underserved communities. Although college enrollment rates have increased, low attainment rates persist in low socioeconomic communities and communities of color. Families in these communities aspire for their children to go to college but rely on the school counselor to help their child navigate the complex path to college. Although the high school counselor is ideally positioned to reduce barriers and engage families in the postsecondary process, they often lack the capacity and resources to do so. Thus, this action-oriented qualitative case study was conducted over 8 months, and explored how urban high school counselors engaged families as collaborative partners to address the metanarrative of low postsecondary attainment rates. Findings suggested that building trust within the school community as foundational to engaging families, taking simple actions were catalysts to transforming school culture, and leveraging family engagement increased school site capacity and affected the broader school community.
