The paper is targeting on the finishing of precision gears for low-noise/noiseless transmission for cars and light trucks. Transmission error is the predominant cause of gear noise. The application of a topologically modified pinion results in reduction of transmission error up to two times. The required modification of the pinion tooth surface is provided on a plunge shaving operation with application of a shaving cutter of an appropriate design. A novel approach for computation of parameters of a form grinding wheel for grinding of the shaving cutter for plunge shaving of a precision involute pinion with topologically modified tooth surface is reported in the paper. The developed approach for computation of parameters of the form grinding wheel is focused on application of the shaving cutter grinder with a lack of CNC articulation. The problem under consideration is solved using the DG/K-based approach of part surface machining earlier developed by the author. (The DG/K-approach is based on fundamental results obtained in differential geometry of surfaces, and in kinematics of multi-parametric motion of a rigid body in E3 space (See Radzevich, S.P., Sculptured Surface Machining on Multi-Axis CNC Machine. An analytical solution to the problem is discussed in the paper. The solution has been used for developing software for the Mitsubishi ZA30CNC shaving cutter grinder for the needs of the automotive industry. Computer simulation reveals high accuracy of the ground shaving cutter.

Transmission error (TE) and backlash are important parameters used to evaluate the transmission accuracy of cycloid-pin drives. Existing calculation methods are mostly based on two-dimensional tooth profile models, and these methods ignore the influence of some abnormal meshing phenomena caused by profile modifications (PMs), manufacturing errors (MEs), and assembly errors (AEs), such as the instantaneous mesh-apart of tooth pairs and the eccentric load on the tooth surface. To fill this gap, a novel approach to accurately calculating the TE and backlash of a cycloid-pin gear pair based on the error tooth surfaces is proposed, and its feasibility and effectiveness are validated by comparison with the theoretical analyses and the results from the literature. Based on this, the effects of the PMs, MEs, and AEs on the transmission accuracy are studied, which will be helpful in optimizing the tooth profile design of a cycloid gear and the tolerance allocation during the installation of a gear pair. The proposed method is also expected to provide accurate error excitation data for the dynamic analysis of cycloid-pin drives.

In this paper a novel modified scheme and effective computer representation for hobbing operation of precision involute gears is presented. The specific goals of the paper are as follows: (a) to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principal features of addendum modification of an involute gear hob tooth, (b) to come up with a novel approach for the computation of parameters of modification of the hob tooth addendum, (c) to determine the applicability and advantages of the application of the developed approach. The key concept in this paper is satisfaction of the necessary conditions of proper part surface generation (Radzevich, S. P., 2002, Computer Aided Design, 34, pp. 727–740) in gear hobbing operation. The research is performed with the application of the novel DG∕K approach of surface machining earlier developed by the author. The DG∕K approach of surface generation is based on fundamental results obtained in differential geometry of surfaces, and in kinematics of multiparametric motion of a rigid body in E3 space. The interested reader may wish to go to the monographs (Radzevich, S. P., 2001, Monograph Kiev, Rastan; 1991, Monograph, Kiev, Vishcha Shkola Publishing) for details. Both of the monographs are available from The Library of Congress. A novel approach for the computation of constraints on the actual values of addendum modification of an involute hob is reported in this paper. The advantages of the developed approach are threefold. It yields the computation: (a) of the minimum and the maximum allowed value of the normal pressure angle; (b) of the maximum allowed value of addendum modification of an involute hob, and (c) of the maximum allowed reduction of addendum of a gear hob. In the way of implementation is also described.

Backlash is a key internal excitation on the dynamic response of planetary gear transmission. After the gear transmission running for a long time under load torque, due to tooth wear accumulation, the backlash between the tooth surface of two mating gears increases, which results in a larger and irregular backlash. However, the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear is generally neglected in lots of dynamics analysis for epicyclic gear trains. In order to investigate the impact of backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic behavior of compound planetary gear set, in this work, first a static tooth surface wear prediction model is incorporated with a dynamic iteration methodology to get the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear for one pair of mating teeth under the condition that contact ratio equals to one. Then in order to introduce the tooth accumulated wear into dynamic model of compound planetary gear set, the backlash excitation generated by tooth accumulated wear for each meshing pair in compound planetary gear set is given under the condition that contact ratio equals to one and does not equal to one. Last, in order to investigate the impact of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic response of compound planetary gear set, a nonlinear lumped-parameter dynamic model of compound planetary gear set is employed to describe the dynamic relationships of gear transmission under the internal excitations generated by worn profile, meshing stiffness, transmission error, and backlash. The results indicate that the introduction of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear makes a significant influence on the bifurcation and chaotic characteristics, dynamic response in time domain, and load sharing behavior of compound planetary gear set.

Planetary gear trains (PGTs) are widely used in various machines owing to their many advantages. However, they suffer from problems of noise and vibration due to the structural complexity and giving rise to substantial noise, vibration, and harshness with respect to both structures and human users. In this report, the sound level from PGTs is measured in an anechoic chamber based on human aural characteristic, and basic features of sound are investigated. Gear noise is generated by the vibration force due to varying gear tooth stiffness and the vibration force due to tooth surface error, or transmission error (TE). Dynamic TE is considered to be increased because of internal and external meshing. The vibration force due to tooth surface error can be ignored owing to almost perfect tooth surface. A vibration force due to varying tooth stiffness could be a major factor.

An approach for the design and generation of low-noise helical gears with localized bearing contact is proposed. The approach is applied to double circular arc helical gears and modified involute helical gears. The reduction of noise and vibration is achieved by application of a predesigned parabolic function of transmission errors that is able to absorb a discontinuous linear function of transmission errors caused by misalignment. The localization of the bearing contact is achieved by the mismatch of pinion-gear tooth surfaces. Computerized simulation of meshing and contact of the designed gears demonstrated that the proposed approach will produce a pair of gears that has a parabolic transmission error function even when misalignment is present. Numerical examples for illustration of the developed approach are given.

The fifth condition of proper PSG is investigated in the paper. On the premise of the obtained results of the investigation, a novel design of plunge shaving cutter for finishing of precision involute gears is proposed. The developed novel design of plunge shaving cutter can be used on shaving machines available on the market, e.g. on Gleason’s new Genesis™ 130SV computer numerical control (CNC) shaving machine.

Abstract The precision of gears has a major influence on the quality of the transmission. If the gear cannot be finished by grinding, the precision of the generating tool becomes essential. Archimedean spiral toothline cylindrical gears are obtained by reciprocate meshing using a milling cutter built up by individual cutters, organized in groups. The profiles of edges must be realized with a minimal profile error. In order to ensure the quality and the precision of the meshed tooth surface, and also the profile constancy after re-sharpening, relief faces must be realized by a grinding relieving operation. A secondary effect of the kinematics of relieving end the spatial extent of the grinding wheel a post undercut results and this produces an inevitable profile error. The present paper discusses a possible grinding wheel setting that produces a maximum theoretical profile error under 1μm along the whole re-sharpening reserve of the cutter. The proposed setting can be realized on a classical relieving lathe.

One important source of noise in drive trains are transmissions. In numerous applications, it is necessary to use helical instead of spur gear stages due to increased noise requirements. Besides a superior excitation behaviour, helical gears also show additional disadvantageous effects (e.g. axial forces and tilting moments), which have to be taken into account in the design process. Thus, a low noise spur gear stage could simplify design and meet the requirements of modern mechanical drive trains. The authors explore the possibility of combining the low noise properties of helical gears with the advantageous mechanical properties of spur gears by using spur gears with variable tip diameter along the tooth width. This allows the adjustment of the total length of active lines of action at the beginning and end of contact and acts as a mesh stiffness modification. For this reason, several spur gear designs are experimentally investigated and compared with regard to their excitation behaviour. The experiments are performed on a back-to-back test rig and include quasi-static transmission error measurements under load as well as dynamic torsional vibration measurements. The results show a significant improvement of the excitation behaviour for spur gears with variable tip diameter.
